Abed, Fazle Hasan,Founder and Chairperson, BRAC (Bangladesh); WISE Prize for Education Laureate, 2011

Session: Thematic Plenary Session 1

Educating for Our TimesTuesday, November 13, 2012

Born in 1936, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed completed his secondary education in Dhaka and went on to study at the University of Glasgow. He trained as a management accountant in London and came back to his homeland to eventually lead the fi nance division of Shell Oil Company there. He returned to the UK during the 1971 Bangladesh war of independence from Pakistan where he lobbied and raised funds for his country’s struggle. After the confl ict he found the newly born country in ruins. It was then that, using his own savings, he established the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) and launched a lifelong campaign to improve lives by educating the rural poor, now reaching nearly 140 million people in nine countries.Over more than 40 years BRAC has become one of the largest non-government providers of education in the world and has contributed directly to the education of more than 10 million students at a variety of levels. BRAC concentrates on bringing education to children and young people who are not reached by the traditional education system.Currently, around 750,000 children – 70 percent of them girls – are enrolled in 25,000 BRAC primary schools in Bangladesh. Pass rates are signifi cantly higher than in the formal primary schools system and virtually all go on to learn in secondary schools. BRAC has expanded its work to pre-primary education, post-primary and continuing education, and has established an adolescent development center for girls.Sir Fazle Hasan Abed was named the fi rst Laureate of the WISE Prize for Education in 2011.

Education and Cultures: Balancing Global and Local?Tuesday, November 13, 2012

Susan H. Gillespie has spent her life exploring the possibilities of translation — inter-lingual, cultural, and educational. She is a graduate of Radcliffe College of Harvard University and attended the University of Freiburg im Breisgau, where, confronted with the European response to the Vietnam War, she learned that the value of international study consists not only in its educational content, but also in the ability it confers to hear oneself as others do — to translate oneself into another culture and language. After a period of anti-war activism, Gillespie embarked on a career in fundraising for the New York Zoological Society, the New York Public Library, and Bard College, where she was named Vice President for Development and Public Affairs in 1985. In 1998, at the invitation of President Leon Botstein, she founded the Institute for International Liberal Education at Bard. The Institute’s mission is to advance the theory and practice of liberal education through international educational partnerships based on the principles of mutuality and equality and the ideals of liberal education, and awarding dual degrees. Bard offers dual B.A. degrees in collaboration with leading universities in Russia, Kyrgyzstan, and Palestine, among other programs. In addition to the dual B.A. degree, the Al-Quds Bard Partnership also offers the region’s fi rst Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) degree.A noted translator from German to English, Gillespie has published translations of works by philosopher Theodor W. Adorno and poet Paul Celan, among others. For further information please visit: iile.bard.edu/ and www.bard.edu/civicengagement/international/.

The mission of CCE is institutional capacity building with a focus on educational reform and community empowerment. For over a decade, CCE has been spearheading learning innovation in Palestine.Marwan lived in North America in the 1980s and early 90s. Upon his return to the Middle East, he was struck by the alarming status of education in the region and the seeming hopelessness of reforming it. He recognized that the only solution is through innovation and outside-the-box designs built for the local context and engineered to work with the available capacities and resources. To tackle this challenge, Marwan established the Unit for Learning Innovation at CCE in 2003. Since then, the unit has been researching, developing and constructing innovative educational models. It has implemented over 50 programs and projects in partnership with key educational stakeholders including schools, universities, community partners, the Ministry of Education, Cisco, UNRWA and UNICEF. These projects have culminated in the current Schools.21 program, a multifaceted education re-development program designed to transform schools into model 21st-century schools. The program is currently being implemented in 10 schools in East Jerusalem. One of the primary elements of Schools.21 is the Learning Objects Bank, an open learning initiative that intelligently encapsulates modern learning paradigms into the existing educational system, a necessary interim step for achieving systemic change and reform.

IMC Weekend School: Motivation-Directed EducationWednesday, November 14, 2012

Heleen Terwijn, a psychologist and psychotherapist specializing in emotion and motivation, and the author of an award-winning thesis on shame, has worked with traumatized patients and studied school motivation. In the 1990s, after one of her studies showed alarming developmental stagnation among immigrant youth in underprivileged neighborhoods, she developed a program designed to engage pre-teens. Terwijn now leads nine IMC Weekend Schools and writes scientifi c reports on their impact, looking for key factors that enhance motivation and combat social exclusion, with the aim of developing interventions for regular schools.Since 1998, IMC Weekend School has introduced students (aged 10-14) to sciences, arts and cultural studies. Volunteer experts serve as guest teachers. Weekend School’s objective is to amend regular education (diploma-directed) with a motivation-directed program. Terwijn has defi ned as building blocks for motivation: broad perspectives, self-confi dence, and a sense of belonging to society.Longitudinal quantitative studies show Weekend School’s effects on future perspectives, self-confi dence and connectedness to society. Qualitative studies show Weekend School alumni to be more motivated to pursue their talents, to persist in school and to give back to society than non-Weekend School students. IMC Weekend School has nine branches, 900 students, 1,250 alumni (the eldest returning as guest teachers), 2,000 volunteer guest teachers, and over 100 corporate sponsors. There are 30 replica projects. Terwijn and her team are currently experimenting with motivation-directed programs in regular schools, and preparing for international expansion.
