ImPACT Concussion Baseline Testing The Center Foundation will be conducting ImPACTConcussionBaseline testing forchildren,ages11 through17 years, who have not already received the baselinethroughtheirhighschools in thepast twoyears,onApril24that9:00am,10:00amand11:00am. Baseline clinics are held at The Center, 2200 NE NeffRoad in Bend. According to the CDC, concussions aresecond only to auto accidents as the leading cause ofchildhoodinjury.Itisestimatedthat15-20%ofhighschoolathletes receive a concussion in any given year, and if anathletereturnstoplaybeforethebrainisfullyhealed,thechild is at risk of second impact concussion syndrome.The Center Foundation and The Center, Certified ImPACTConsultants,arepleasedtoofferthiscommunityserviceasameansofhelpingprotectyoungbrains.Itisrecommendedthatstudentathleteshaveabaselinetesteverytwoyears.ImPACT Baseline testing is a computerized“snapshot” ofhow a child’s healthy brain is functioning; the test takesabout an hour. The baselines are NOT MRIs or scans.Baselinesareelectronicallystoredforuseintheeventthatthechild receivesaconcussion. AlfalfaislocatedwithintheportionofDeschutesCountywith no structural or wildland fire protection. Althoughoutdoor burning is still allowed in Deschutes County, itis important to remember that whether your property islocated within a fire district or not, burning regulations stillapply.(DeschutesCountyCodeChapter8.20). Disabled To Benefit From New Affordable Housing Assistance Housing Works has moved 60 Central Oregon households off a waiting list and intohousing, with the issuance of 60 new Non-Elderly Disabled (NED) Vouchers that providerent assistance. The NEDVouchers, funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and UrbanDevelopment’sHousingChoiceVoucherProgram,areavailableto income-eligible,disabledapplicantsunderage62. “Fundingthisyearwasuncertain,andwedidn’tknowifweweregoingtobeabletoissueany vouchers,” said Kenny LaPoint, Housing & Resident Services Director at HousingWorks.“We’repleasedwewereabletoassist60householdswhowereonthewaitinglist.”Thewaitinglist,whichstillnumbersover360disabledindividualsandtheirfamilies,openedinFebruaryforoneweek,allowingapplicantstoapplyonlineviaanautomatedsystemrecentlyadoptedbyHousingWorkstomaketheprocessmoreconvenient. Since the launch of CAN cancer in 2009, the program has raised over $80,000, helping more than 300 patients in Central Oregon.
Each year the community has helped raise more money than the year before and we are hoping for 2012 to be that much bigger and better! If everyone who receives an envelope pitches in, we can help our neighbors-in-need stay strong.
CAN cancer provides community assistance to help cover non-medical living expenses for Central Oregonians fighting all forms of cancer. Funds raised for CAN cancer have helped local families with their utilities, hotel stays, gas cards, rent assistance, grocery cards and more.
The group of Central Oregon Garbage Haulers includes: Wilderness Garbage, Bend Garbage & Recycling, Cascade Disposal, High Country Disposal, Prineville Disposal and Madras Sanitary Service. 100% of the money donated will be put into a fund with the St. Charles Foundation so that all funds raised will be used directly to benefit local residents.
“Hearing the words “you have cancer” are some of the most stressful words a person can hear. But once that initial shock wears off and people start to deal with the realities of treatment, the logistics can be overwhelming particularly for so many of the folks in our local and neighboring communities who have already been hit so hard by the economy. Fighting cancer is expensive. No one should ever have to choose between keeping their home or putting gas in their car to make it to treatment, but we hear that all the time. Last year we gave out over $38,000 to patients in need – that was more than twice what we gave out the previous year. When Lynn and Denise Hatch and others founded the organization, they were hoping to help children in our area. Within a couple of years, they had fi led paperwork to create a non-profi t that we could use to fund raise and distribute money to people who needed help in La Pine and the surrounding area.”Who are the main players at SCOOTR, Inc.? “We have lots of members and a smaller group of individuals that step up to the leadership roles. I guess you could say that with a few phone calls, we always have enough people to take care of our projects.”Why do you work, live and play in La Pine? “For me? I moved up here in 1995. At fi rst, I just came up to go fi shing on vacation. Next thing I knew, I was moving things up here. I liked the fact that this was a small town and I wanted to be part of watching it grow. I was a well driller and now I am a hunting guide and outfi tter. Being located in this area works perfectly.”What is the potential for growth for your organization? “We are a non-profi t organization and people with the same vision of helping others while they enjoy each other’s company are welcome to join SCOOTR, Inc.”What is your organization’s greatest challenge? “� ere are lots of agencies and organizations here in the area that lend a hand to others. With the decline in the economy a few years ago, we all have to try not to overuse the ‘Givers’ with the same hand out for donations.”What is the biggest highlight of your organization? “At Christmas time when we have raised enough money to go shopping and buy the items on children’s Christmas Wish List, and we get to see the faces of the families who realize that they will have a good Christmas - that says it all. We do it for those kids.”What do you do to relax? “I like to go for rides on the motorcycle, fi sh and hunt.”Tell us something about yourself that few people know about: “Maybe it’s the fact that I have a tender heart under this old, hard exterior! As I grow older, it is becoming more important that I give all that I can to help others.” In terms of volunteering in the community, what is your personal contribution to the community? “I am active in SCOOTR, Inc. and the American Legion (he is the incoming Chaplain) and both organizations help out in the community.”What are your plans for the future? “It would be my vision to get SCOOTR, Inc. to step up and be even more self-suffi cient so we can do even more to help in our brand new City with all of the new people that have moved here!”What advice would you give to community leaders? “Don’t forget where you come from!” I asked him what he meant and he explained a little: “People get caught up in the political aspects and forget about the struggle it took to get to that position. You just can’t forget what it took to make it and never forget your grass roots!”Do you have a mission? “We have a goal to take care of kids in the community.” He explained that it used to be Christmas Baskets, but now it is much more. Charity Golf Tournament ABOUT THE EVENT: The 3RD Annual Scramble for Sight will be held Sunday, May 16, 2010 at Quail Run Golf Course in La Pine. Quail Run Golf Course has been host to many charity events through the years. The par 72 course, measures from 5391 to 6897 yards long. Quail Run recently expanded to 18 holes with beautiful sights of surrounding Cascade Mountains that will take your breath away.

Other signs and symptoms of motion sickness may include feeling warm, sweating, and vomiting. Symptoms can also reappear after the offending motion stops, such as returning to land after being on a boat. Natural neurotransmitter chemicals that are involved in producing motion sickness include norepinephrine, histamine, and acetylcholine. Motion sickness affects different persons to varying degrees.
Those who experience motion sickness may consider looking out the window to create a match between the sensations of motion and the visual experience. Lying down when possible, such as on a boat, may help decrease symptoms of motion sickness. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), dimenhydrinate (Dramamine), and meclizine (Bonine, Antivert) are antihistamine medications available over-the-counter for treatment of motion sickness. Scopolamine (Transderm Scop) is a patch that is available with a prescription that may be applied to the skin for 3 days to prevent motion sickness. Promethazine (Promethegan) is an antidopaminergic medication available with a prescription for the prevention and treatment of motion sickness.

The Tackle BoxAttention fishermen! Trout stocking alert! Haystack
Reservoir has been stocked with 7700 legal-sized trout and is open for fishing and even though the reports have been slow, the fishing is bound to pick up as the weather warms and the season progresses.
Because Haystack is open year ‘round, it is not on standby waiting for opening weekend and may be a quick fix until your very favorite lake is open at the end of the month.
If you are not familiar with Haystack Reservoir, it is located 10 miles south of Madras on Hwy. 97. Go east about 2 miles on a county road about 1 mile south of Culver. The lake covers approximately 240 acres and has 2 improved boat ramps, but you will need to take your own provisions, fuel and supplies.
This is a great little lake that is usually a little better earlier in the season, as it gets pretty warm and the fish go low into the lake and retreat from the intense sunshine that is its destiny later in the summer months.
So, if you are looking for a more local fishing hole, check out Haystack Reservoir for some pre-season fishing! Oh, yeah, did I mention it has been stocked this season already?
