COVO La Pine Branch Office Grand Opening! The Grand Opening of the La Pine Branch Office of Central Oregon Veteran Outreach will be on May 10th from 4:00-7:00pm in La Pine Square (S7), across from Ray’s Food Place.COVO La Pine Branch Office - Who We Are and What We Do: La Pine, South Deschutes County, Northern Klamath County and Western Lake County collectively have a large population of Veterans. Many of these Veterans need help and many Veterans are willing to help. In recognition of this, COVO is working with community partners in La Pine to expand available services for Veterans in locations in and around La Pine.Central Oregon Veterans Outreach (COVO) is an advocate for veterans of all generations with a main office in Bend. Our mission is to serve, assist and create support for veterans who reside in Deschutes, Crook, Jefferson and parts of Harney, Lake and Klamath counties. COVO has four major areas in which we support veterans: an active Homeless Outreach Program; a Veterans Service Office; a Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program (HVRP); and a Veterans Housing Program. We also operate the reservation lines for the daily DAV van to and from the Portland VA Hospital and the local van that picks up veterans in La Pine and surrounding areas who need rides to appointments at the local Bend VA Clinic.HOMELESS OUTREACH PROGRAM provides clothing, gear, food, water, propane and other sustenance items as well as mobile medical and dental service vans to the homeless veterans living in camps, homeless shelters and transitional housing.VETERANS SERVICE OFFICE in COVO has a certified VSO who advocates for veterans seeking health, pensions or disability benefits from the Veterans Administration.HOMELESS VETERANS REINTEGRATION PROGRAM (HVRP) is a jobs training program that assists homeless veterans to re-enter the labor force and access the hidden job market to find long term employment. Once in a desirable job with livable wages, these veterans can reclaim a position in society that they deserve.VETERANS HOUSING PROGRAM has a growing inventory of COVO managed programs and properties that provide emergency, transitional and permanent housing solutions for homeless or at-risk veterans. COVO operates an Emergency / Transitional Housing Program in Bend in partnership with Bethlehem Inn, housing for homeless male and female veterans and housing for veteran families, including a house in La Pine.

IN LA PINE HOW WE CAN HELP: By contacting our La Pine Branch Office we can either assist you directly or link you up with other services for veterans that are available in Central Oregon. The La Pine Branch Office is located in La Pine Square, Suite S7, 51538 Hwy. 97 (PO Box 555), La Pine, OR 97739. Telephone: 541-508-2412. Email: [email protected].

IN LA PINE HOW YOU CAN HELP: Donate Your Time, Money, Supplies / Equipment (outdoor gear, outdoor clothes, tents, tarps, etc.): Contact COVO’s La Pine Branch Office Manger Jerry Chinn (see number and address above to volunteer).

The remaining northern half of the Cascade Lakes Highway remains closed and is scheduled to open in advance of the Memorial Day weekend at the end of May. High Lakes Car Club - Not Just About Old Cars! Many in the La Pine area know the High Lakes Car Club. “Oh yeah, they have the car show.” But how many really know how involved we are in the community? Classic cars are our passion! But we do much more than host an annual car show!Three years ago, out Little Deschutes Grange was in danger of being closed down because they lacked membership. This would mean all money and property would go to the State Grange, which would be a real loss for La Pine. So, they came to the Car Club for help. Several of our members joined the Grange immediately, saving them from closure. Today, many Car Club members are Officers in the Grange.A couple of years ago, the La Pine Park and Recreation District was unable to pay their large insurance premium. They came to the Car Club for help. We were able to donate $1000 from the Club, matched by our member, Dave Hazeltine. This $2000 got the Park & Rec “over the hump” until they could get additional funding.Every year, our Car Club donates food, toys and money to the Christmas Baskets and the SCOOTR Toy Run. We also donate during the year to many other organizations who are helping in our community. Each year, we participate in the 4th of July Parade and the Christmas Light Parade. When the La Pine Rodeo Association, High School or Frontier Days need convertibles to drive princesses or dignitaries in the Parade or into their events, they call the Car Club and we are always happy to help.We have only two fund raisers during the year: The Classic Automotive Swap Meet on Saturday, May 12th and our High Lakes Show-n-Shine on Saturday, June 30th. Both events are held at the La Pine Senior Activity Center. Watch for posters!Classic car lovers will travel to wherever the great car shows are and we’ve been told by participants and vendors that our show is one of the best! We draw entries from Reno, Seattle, Spokane and California, as well as all of Oregon. This is a boost to La Pine’s economy and its image! We have had great community support and we sincerely appreciate every donation, whether it’s a trophy sponsorship, raffle item, cash donation or giveaway items for our “goody bags”. Most of our Major Sponsors have been with us for many years and have made it possible for us to continue hosting this fun show at the level we have and to draw people to our town. The High Lakes Car Club was started in 1975 by six members who loved and appreciated owning classic cars. Our membership has grown considerably and we still have that original goal of the group: to preserve and further the love of old cars and to be an asset to the community! Hopefully, we have done this and are still doing it.For more information call Tom at 541-536-3416 or 541-508-9835.

Gas To Energy Info MeetingDeschutes County Commissioners are considering a proposed gas-to-energy project at Knott Landfill that is expected to transfer currently unused landfill gases into revenue for the County. The proposed project would use the most current technology to increase gas production at the landfill and convert it to reusable gases or liquid. The public is invited to an information open house about the proposed project to be held on: Tuesday, May 1st at 5:30pm at the Deschutes Services Center building, 1st floor meeting rooms, 1300 NW Wall Street.Along with creating additional revenue for the County, the process will promote decomposition and stabilization of the landfill waste. Achieving this reduces potential impacts on the environment.Department of Solid Waste Director Timm Schimke, and the Board of County Commissioners; and WTEG, the project’s developers, will attend the open house to answer questions. For more information, please contact the Department of Solid Waste at 541-317-3163.

Back problems are a common complaint for spring gardeners. To prevent them, remember to lift heavier objects primarily with your thigh muscles, not your back muscles! Never twist at your waist while carrying a heavy load when you can shift your body in the direction of your work.

Don’t bend, kneel. Instead of bending at the waist, kneel on one or both knees. (Knee pads are a great help with this).

Wheels are good! Save steps by rolling a garbage can to the clean-up area and fill it as you work. Use your wheelbarrow or wagon.

Avoid reaching into the trunk of your car or bed of the truck to lift heavy bags of fertilizer or compost. Try pulling the load closer to you before you lift.

Careful with ladders. One of the most common ways of injury at home involves ladders. Use one that is tall enough and make sure it sits on level, stable ground.

And, lastly, don’t try to do it all in one day. Unless you are in great shape, you will be surprised at the muscle soreness you may develop after a long winter of limited activity.

And, of course, always get your spinal tune-up after any heavy exertion. Your body is the tool you use every day. Keep it sharp!

Now is the time to clean up your yards and create defensible spaces around homes and recycle that debris at FireFree collection sites FOR FREE in Deschutes and Jefferson Counties. • Friday, May 4 through May 12 at Knott Landfill in Bend (closed Sunday).• Fridays & Saturdays, May 4 & 5 and May 11 & 12 at the Westside Collection Site in Bend. • Friday & Saturday, May 18 & 19 at Deschutes County Transfer Sites: Negus Transfer Station in Redmond, Fryrear Transfer Station in Cloverdale, Southwest Transfer Station in La Pine.• Friday & Saturday May 4 & 5 at the Sunriver Compost Site in Sunriver.• Saturday & Sunday May 5 & 6 and 12 & 13 at Box Canyon Transfer Site in Madras.FireFree reminds you to take a look around your property in the “home ignition zone” where glowing embers can ignite spot fires and vulnerable areas like decks, patios and fences that can spread flames to your home. And take advantage of upcoming FireFree Recycling Events to dispose of the debris for FREE. Where are your most vulnerable places for glowing embers to ignite your home? Are your gutters and roof valleys free from debris like pine needles and leaves? Clean them out. Despite a metal or asphalt shingle roof, the buildup of gutter debris provides necessary fuel for the glowing embers to ignite adjacent fascia boards or siding – most often made of wood. Do your shrubs and weeds provide a path of fuel for fire to reach your trees or home? Reduce shrubs and other “ladder fuels” around your home to reduce the threat of ground fires igniting nearby trees, or your home. What can catch fire on your deck or patio or near your fence? Remove weeds, shrubs or any combustible materials from around, under or on top of your deck, patio or wood fence. This includes toys, planters, construction materials, furniture and cushions along with even small piles of pine needles or leaves. Is your wood pile near your home or other combustible vegetation? Move wood piles at least 20 feet away from your home or other combustibles. Visit the FireFree website at www.firefree.org for more information about how you can prepare your property for wildfire season.

Art Exhibit: Reflections In Acrylic And ClayThe Friends of the Sunriver Area Library present an exhibit featuring ceramics by Dori Kite and acrylic painting by Kim Jones, opening May 1, 2012 at the Sunriver Area Public Library in the Sunriver Business Park. The public is cordially invited to view this exhibit during the Library’s regular hours, and to join the Friends at a reception for the artists on Saturday, May 5, 2012, from 2:30 to 4:30 at the Sunriver Area Public Library. When not camping with her family or skiing on Mt. Bachelor, Bend native Dori Kite was begging for art supplies of one kind or another and creating whatever she could with whatever she had. Her first experience working with clay came at Bend High School with Tom Temple. “When I watched him take a ball of clay and turn it into a lovely vessel, I was hooked.” She took classes from Temple at COCC as well, and was encouraged to transfer to Eastern Oregon University. Mentored by Tom Dimond at Eastern, Dori earned her Bachelor’s degree in art with a focus on clay. “I have so much for which to thank these two men; they constantly encouraged and pushed me to stretch, and still do to this day.” After college, Dori occasionally dabbled in watercolor and other art media, but swore that when her son, Cody, left for college, she would jump back into clay with both feet -- and that is just what she has done. Her first pottery showing was at Cindercone Clay Center in April 2011, where she maintains a small studio space. Her work there earned her an invitation to Potters for Education in July 2011 and to the Clay Guild of the Cascades’ Wildfire Pottery Showcase in November. “I am a little blown away at how quickly things have moved in the 18 months I’ve been back into this,” Dori says. “I feel like I’ve really come home.” Dori says that her work is influenced by everything and everyone in her life. “I am what I am because of where I live, what I read, and who my friends and family are.” Her current forms are mostly hand-built from slabs, but you will see hints of wheel-thrown shapes added here and there. “There are certainties and surprises in the pottery process. I love it all, from clay prep and glaze mixing, to forming, glazing and firing. Every time you open a kiln, it’s like Christmas as a kid.”Painter Kim Jones has exhibited and sold her work throughout Central Oregon for many years and is now a member of the Artists Gallery Sunriver. Her paintings have been prominent in the Tour of Homes, where she is known to show a large variety of art, working with designers to complement each and every room. Kim has an interior design background and her favorite thing to do is to create just the right painting to enhance any space. Dynamic composition, powerful expression and vibrant colors, along with imagination help create her works of depth and dimension. Kim has always been inspired by the outer world, but says she is now very excited to explore the world within. Regardless of the piece, Kim always paints what makes her heart sing. “Reflections in Acrylic and Clay” will be on display at the Sunriver Area Public Library from May 1, 2012 through June 30, 2012, during normal library hours. A portion of the sales from the Library gallery directly benefits the Friends of the Sunriver Area Library, and helps the Friends’ efforts to fund special programs at the Library. The Sunriver Area Library is located at 56855 Venture Lane in Sunriver. For questions about library hours, please call 541-312-1080.

PFDs are the first item on the list. The water is still very cold and it doesn’t take long for the water conditions to take the toll on your core body temperature. Just having one on board may not be good enough in very cold weather. Wear it and be safe.

A well charged fire extinguisher is a close second and some would say a first. If you cannot put out a fire, you WILL end up in the water!

Good plugs keep the water from seeping into your hold and having your fishing day cut short or prevent you from going out at all.

Tires, tags and licenses are the other essentials and of course take enough water and food for the day. Don’t get out there and not have what you need to make your day fun and safe.

Don’t forget your faithful companion, they need food and water too! Do they have their own PFD? They should.

If you think safety first, you will have a great time on the water this season and have fishing stories to tell. Don’t think twice about the needs of yourself and crew, it is the little things that make a day great, or challenging.

Enjoy the open 2012 fishing season, and let us know if you have something Brag-Worthy!

Good Luck, and Fish On!

The Friendly Fisherman

Teddy Roosevelt Historical Tribute Tour To Visit BendTeddy Roosevelt’s Oregon Roadshow, a live history performance, will visit schools, museums, and historical societies across Oregon May 7‐12. Organized by the Oregon Historical Society (OHS) and sponsored by Wells Fargo, the tour will include a stop in Bend. The Deschutes County Historical Society is sponsoring a lunchtime event at McMenamins Old St. Francis Theater (700 N.W. Bond Street, Bend). Doors open at 11:00am and the performance begins at 12:00pm.Tickets to the performance cost $5 in advance and $10 at the door. Space is limited, tickets can be purchased in advance at the Deschutes County Historical Society (129 NW Idaho Avenue, Bend, open Tuesday–Saturday from 10:00am–4:30pm) and at their monthly History Pub event on April 24 (McMenamins Old St. Francis, 7:00pm). For information about this event, please call 541-389-1813 or email [email protected] Teddy Roosevelt impersonator Joe Wiegand will be joined on the tour by OHS Executive Director Kerry Tymchuk and Wells Fargo History Museum Manager Steve Greenwood. Greenwood will share his knowledge of Wells Fargo’s history in the Pacific Northwest.“After witnessing Joe’s performance to schoolchildren at OHS last year, I knew we needed to invite him back to share his talents and deep love of history across our state,” said Tymchuk. “We are thrilled to partner with Wells Fargo to bring this educational experience to schools and historical societies throughout the region.”The tour will include stops in Beaverton, Eugene, Klamath Falls, Sisters, Salem, Prineville and Portland, among other cities. Wiegand has been bringing T.R. to life for years with his unparalleled grasp of history and uncanny resemblance to the 26th president. His depth of knowledge about the personal anecdotes in Roosevelt’s life make his audiences feel they are truly in the presence of Teddy himself. “So many of T.R.’s contemporaries testify to the way he entertained audiences with inspirational and humorous stories from his youth, his ranching days, Cuba and the Presidency,” Wiegand said. “I really enjoy sharing T.R.’s funny stories of life in the White House with six kids and telling anecdotes from his many adventures, from bear hunts to the Panama Canal, from Africa to the Amazon.”The tour coincides with Wells Fargo’s 160th year celebration. The financial services company opened its first Oregon office in Portland in 1852. “Wells Fargo started out with two employees and no customers. In the ensuing 16 decades, we became one of the nation’s strongest financial services companies by focusing on helping our local customers and communities throughout the U.S. succeed financially,” said Greenwood. “We’ve never lost sight of our history and the role Wells Fargo played in our country’s development of the West. We’re grateful to the Oregon Historical Society for organizing this unique educational experience and partnering with us so we can share Wells Fargo’s story.”ABOUT THE OREGON HISTORICAL SOCIETY: The Society has served as Oregon’s primary research collection and museum about Oregon history since 1898. OHS has an extensive collection of historical pieces, including over 85,000 artifacts and 3 million photographs and films. It safeguards and presents Oregon’s history through a museum, research library, traveling exhibits, school programs and website content.ABOUT WELLS FARGO: Founded in 1852 by Henry Wells and William Fargo, Wells Fargo operates 11 free history museums around the nation, including Portland, and a mobile history museum that travels to community events throughout the nation. For more information about the Portland museum or to schedule a group tour there, call Greenwood at 503-886‐1102. More information about Wells Fargo’s history is also posted on wellsfargohistory.com.

Open Burning Residents in the “unprotected” areas of the County must obtain a copy of the local burning regulations from the closest fire department and comply with daily burning opportunities by calling the closest department’s burn line to determine whether it is safe to burn. “High winds are often the reason for shutting down burning in the fire district,” states Joe Stutler, Deschutes County Forester. “It is imperative, especially in the unprotected areas within the County, that residents check local reports regarding weather forecasts and burning opportunities with the closest fire department before burning to avoid potential disasters,” adds Stutler. • Bend Fire & Rescue Burn Line - 541-322-6335.• Redmond Fire & Rescue Burn Line - 541-504-5035.• Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District Burn Line - 541-549-2333.• Cloverdale Fire Department - 541-548-4815.• La Pine Fire District Burn Line - 541-536-9056.• Crooked River Ranch - 541-923-4633.The other important message as a result of blaze is the importance of defensible space, particularly in the unprotected areas of Deschutes County. “Residents who choose to live in these areas take on an extra level of responsibility,” says Katie Lighthall, Program Director for Project Wildfire. “Their need for defensible space is greater knowing that a fire department will not respond when fire occurs,” Lighthall adds. Residents can take that responsibility by completing defensible space around their properties - creating 30 to 100 feet of non-combustible space where fire cannot reach a structure or allow for the ignition of embers from a nearby fire. Project Wildfire reminds residents in central Oregon that YOU are the greatest resource when it comes to protecting homes and neighborhoods. “Our late, wet winter will provide an abundance of ‘green-up’ and grasses that can quickly turn to disaster here, particularly in combination with debris and field burning,” adds Joe Stutler. With this in mind, Project Wildfire reminds you to take a look around your property in the “home ignition zone” where glowing embers from nearby fires can ignite spot fires and vulnerable areas like decks, patios and fences that can spread flames to your home. And take advantage of upcoming FireFree Recycling Events to dispose of the debris for FREE. FireFree Recycling Events in Central Oregon: Friday, May 4 through May 12 at Knott Landfill in Bend (closed Sunday); Fridays & Saturdays, May 4 & 5 and May 11 & 12 at the Westside Collection Site in Bend; Friday & Saturday, May 18 & 19 at Deschutes County Transfer Sites: Negus Transfer Station in Redmond, Fryrear Transfer Station in Cloverdale, Southwest Transfer Station in La Pine; Friday & Saturday, May 4 & 5 at the Sunriver Compost Site in Sunriver; Saturday & Sunday, May 5 & 6 and 12 & 13 at Box Canyon Transfer Site in Madras. For additional tips, residents can visit www.firefree.org or www.firewise.org. For more info contact the Project Wildfire office at 541-322-7129.

“We are the hub of the business community, promoting commerce and tourism making La Pine a vibrant community to work, live and play!”

LA PINE SIGNS – Owners: Rodger and Cathy KelsoSo, Rodger and Cathy, when did you open your business? “As of 2009, we officially changed the name of our business after years of doing the same kind of work under a different name.” Who are the main players at La Pine Signs? “My wife, Cathy and I run the sign business, but I also use time to do the other part of our two businesses- Rapid Rockers, a drywall company. Cathy works in the shop daily and takes all of the orders and she also does the bookkeeping end of the business. Our two sons, Jacob and Joseph, can be very valuable helpers when it comes to producing the signs. It is a real family business!”Why do you work, live and play in La Pine? “We love the four seasons and it is a friendly area. We like the capability of being able to take off camping, fishing, hiking or going out on our four wheelers. We love the snow and the sun.”What is the potential for growth for La Pine Signs? “We believe there is much potential for growth of this business in our area and we look forward to the time that the sign business will allow us to survive on that business alone!”What is your business’s great challenge? “Getting equipment is a very expensive proposition. We are very close to having everything that we need to be a full service sign company!”What is the biggest highlight of your career? “We have done well enough that it has allowed us to donate a sign here and there. We have been able to help the community locally and we have also recently donated a banner to a school in Honduras. The feeling of contributing is gratifying to us and we are lucky to know that the donations that we make, no matter how large or small they are, make a difference and are appreciated.”What do you do to relax? “It is family time! We go four-wheeling, camping, fishing and we both love to spend time with our boys.”Tell us something about yourself that few people know about: “I hate chocolate covered strawberries,” says Rodger. In terms of volunteering in the community, what is your personal contribution to the community? “We do the best we can to reach out when organizations and groups come to us for signage. We offer quality products and we make adjustments to fit the individual needs of these customers. We have worked with schools, community fund raisers and a couple of new businesses to help them get the signs they need to get going! Add the family and business responsibilities and we have a full schedule here in the area.”What are your plans for the future? “Our plan is to grow with the City and become a bigger part in providing the City and the surrounding area with the signage they need.”What advice would you give to community leaders? “You all need to get on the same page and stay focused on the needs of the community and really focus on Supporting Our Youth and the areas surrounding the schools.”Do you have a mission? “Our mission is to provide Local Professional Service (LPS) at reasonable prices.”Address: Corner of Coach & First St., La Pine • email: [email protected] • Phone: 541-536-5023

Pharmacy & Your HealthOsteoporosis Affects Men As WellOsteoporosis is a reduction in bone mass, accompanied by an increased risk of fractures. As age increases, bone loss increases, particularly later in life. Normally, cells called osteoclasts work to resorb older bone and osteoblasts work to build new replacement bone. However, in osteoporosis, bone loss occurs as a result of an imbalance in this process. Certain types of medications, such as glucocorticoids and anticonvulsant medications, may increase bone loss. Smoking cigarettes, excessive alcohol intake, and low amounts of physical activity can also lead to bone loss.

Men with osteoporosis are encouraged to avoid cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol intake. In addition, a program of regular weight bearing exercise is recommended. Calcium and vitamin D supplements should be taken daily. Men aged 50 years or older who have experienced a fracture in the past and have a low bone mineral density (BMD) score may be prescribed medications for osteoporosis, such as bisphosphonate medications. Alendronate (Fosamax) and risedronate (Actonel) are bisphosphonates that may be prescribed for men as well as women with osteoporosis. These medications work to prevent and decrease bone resorption, which leads to an increase in bone density.

COCC Hosts Art Exhibit Featuring WorksBy Valerie WinterhollerCentral Oregon Community College is hosting “Visual Apothecary,” an art exhibit showcasing a compilation of small treasures to be explored and examined. The exhibit is on display at the Barber Library Rotunda Gallery on the COCC Bend Campus through May 11.“My art has always been inspired by my everyday life experiences, travel, people, and the continually shifting world, with its stillness of nature and the excitement of humanity,” said Winterholler. “It is the record of my experiences and my place in the world.”A work she donated to the Tsunami Relief event in Seattle sparked an intense bidding war, raising a significant amount for Mercy Corps. Her other donations include works for Arts Central, Boys and Girls Club and the Humane Society. Winterholler pursued her artistic studies at Southern Oregon University. For information, call 541-383-7564. In advance of college events, persons needing accommodation or transportation because of a physical or mobility disability, contact Joe Viola: 541-383-7775. For accommodation because of other disability such as hearing impairment, contact Anne Walker: 541-383-7743.
