THE PAINTINGS OF D. STEVENS BURGESS-The artwork

of Salem artist, D. Stevens Burgess, is currently on display in thefirst floor Benn Room of the Courthouse Community Center andwill remain on view through the month of September. Stevenswas born in New Delhi, India and studied art in Bangkok, Thailandand New York. His exhibit contains 17 works focusing on land,water and the natural world. His studies are creations of his ownimagination, and he no longer uses points of reference in any of his pieces. His tones are subtle, and his paintings draw theviewer into the landscape in a most relaxing manner. Stevens hasexhibited his work in several area galleries with this being hissecond exhibit at the CCC. The Benn room is handicap accessibleand open to the public

EXHIBIT-exhibition opened recently at the Washington County Historical Society: Stocking theGeneral Stores in Washington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in transportation aredocumented by period photographs and artifacts. Goods and services in the stores are discussed bylocal writers who also remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences. Shipments madetheir way up the Hudson, through the Champlain Canal and north to Lake Champlain or whenheading south to Albany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved to accommodate largernumbers of goods and more efficient ways to dispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 nowincluded wooden boxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-use, scuttles andbaskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, no corrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags,to say nothing of plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and distance which com-modities had to travel. Locally, some general stores would take orders and deliver in a day or two. Awagon or cart with horse could be rented by an individual or small business from a livery for localtravel. Within the county, stagecoaches could carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, andsome mail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores provided necessary anddesirable goods closer to home. Stocking the General Stores is open to the public at no charge onWednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through November.It is in the HeritageResearch Center at the Washington County Historical Society, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, NewYork. VINTAGE FARM EQUIPMENT EXHIBITION- Tom Davis, local entrepreneur, is opening hisfarmstead on Lamb Hill Road in Bolton to the public again this year, on Saturday September 14,and will have most of his collection of vintage machinery up and running. Machines designed andbuilt in the late 19th century to do everything from cutting and splitting firewood to churningbutter will be displayed. This rare opportunity will also include machinery brought in by severalother collectors. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Warren County, in partnership with DEC SportsmanEducation volunteer instructors, will be hosting Hunter Education Classes on Saturday, September14th and Sunday, September 15th. The following classes are being offered each day; SportsmanEducation, Bow Hunter Education, or Trapper Education (you may choose ONE class per day,bow hunter students must have completed hunter education previous to registering for bow huntereducation). All classes are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. They will be held from 8:30 am -

4:30 pm at Pack Forest in Warrensburg. All courses are “Home Study” courses, materials MUST bepicked up at the CCE Education Center, 377 Schroon River Road, Warrensburg by August 29th at4:30pm. The CCE office is open 8:30 – 4:30 Monday through Thursday. The workbook section of the bow hunter and hunter education courses must be completed for students to gain entry into theclass. Lunch will be available to purchase for $7.00 and will include either (2) Hamburgers or (2) hotdogs with chips and a drink. Lunch is being prepared and served by Warren County ConservationCouncil. Please register & pay for lunch and pick up a lunch ticket when you pick up your booksat Cornell Cooperative Extension.
