WHEN SHOULD I MAKE A DONATION TO CONNECTICUT CHILDREN’S? We welcome toy donations at all times of the year. Many donated items are received in the midst of the holiday season to help our children and families with their personal celebrations. Please consider donating at other times of the year to meet the needs of patients receiving care in other seasons. Gifts will be stored and used throughout the year to promote playful experiences both at the bedside and in our activity rooms.

CAN I/MY GROUP DONATE USED TOYS OR STUFFED ANIMALS THAT MY FAMILY NO LONGER USES? In order to keep our patients safe and healthy all donated items must be new, unwrapped, latex free and in good condition in compliance with our safety and infection control guidelines.

HOW OLD ARE THE CHILDREN AT THE MEDICAL CENTER WHO WILL RECEIVE GIFTS OF TOY DONATIONS? Children of all ages are cared for here at Connecticut Children’s, ranging from infancy to young adulthood. Our greatest needs are donations for infants and children (birth-2 years) and teens (12-19 years). Please consider sorting your donation by age/gender to help us distribute your gift to patients more quickly.

CAN I/MY GROUP VISIT THE MEDICAL CENTER AND DELIVER MY DONATION DIRECTLY TO A FAMILY? Donors are unable to deliver gifts directly to patients due to concerns for patient confidentiality and infection control. In order to maintain a restful and healing environment for patients and families for those receiving care here, staff will accept donations on their behalf and distribute directly to families as appropriate.

CAN I/MY GROUP DONATE HANDMADE BLANKETS AND HATS? Yes, we are happy to accept these handmade items for use with our patients and families. Due to the possibility of allergens affecting patients, please make sure all items are cleaned and free of dust, pet hair, second-hand smoke and other allergens.

CAN I/MY GROUP DONATE FOOD FOR FAMILIES? Many of the children and families receiving care at the medical center have special diets or food allergies. For this reason, we are unable to accept donated food items. If you prefer to meet this need for families in another way, please contact us directly about ways to contribute in kind donations (gift cards) for local restaurants and grocery stores for patients and families.

MY CHURCH/SCHOOL GROUP IS CONSIDERING A DONATION. IS THERE ANYTHING WE SHOULD CONSIDER? Our facility works with patients and families with all different backgrounds of faith and ethnicity. Please avoid religious themed items so that we may utilize your gift for a variety of patients and families. If you are planning a donation with young children, please contact us directly to help you plan.

*We request that all crayons and other children’s art materials have this label: “Conforms to ASTM D-4236,” or similar language. This label means that the formulas of the crayons and other art materials have been reviewed by a toxicologist for chronic hazards and are labeled appropriately. Crayola is our preferred brand for crayons, markers, pencils and finger paints. In addition
