Wishart State School Sport a Year in Review 2018

This year has been a very busy but successful year for Wishart State School in sport. Our school competed in an

extensive range of sporting activities at a number of local and state-wide events. Here is a look back on the year that

was.

January

First week back of 2018 saw the Wishart State

School Swim Club restart after the holiday

hiatus. Many new and regular swimmers

started the second half of their season. We also

welcomed our new student leadership team

into their positions. We were so lucky to

welcome back Laticia Transom, one of our past

students to present badges to our new captains.

February

Over twenty Wishart students competed at the Mt

Gravatt District Swimming Championships. As usual we

had a strong showing with many students beating their

personal best times and finishing in the top half of

competitors. Lachlan was selected for the Mt Gravatt

team and regional trials.

We had a number of students trial for Mt Gravatt

District teams in other sports. Jemma was successful in

making the Mt Gravatt District Girls Basketball. While

Kurt and Zac made the Mt Gravatt Boys Basketball team.

Kurt performed outstandingly at Metropolitan East

trials and earned selection in the Regional Team to

travel to the State Championships.

Semester 1 Interschool Sport kicked off with Soccer

and Netball fixtures starting on the last day of the

month. This year we had over ninety students

participating across nine teams for Terms 1 and 2.

March

In March, Tara, Summer and Ryan were all selected in the Mt

Gravatt District Netball Team which is a reflection of the

growing success of Netball at Wishart State School. All three

students represented our school with pride at the Metropolitan

East Regional Trials.

April

Students born in 2008, 2007 and 2006 who performed

strongly at our school carnival went on to represent

Wishart at the Mount Gravatt District Cross Country Trials.

Our team went up against 40 other schools from across

Mt Gravatt. Building on a strong block of training, most of

the Wishart team finished in the top 30. Some notable

performances include Abenezar 20th, Tara 12th and

Adalena 25th. Summer ran an exceptional race finishing

5th in the 11 year old girls age group earning selection for

the Mount Gravatt Team.

May

After competing at our local Cross Country competition Wishart State

School’s next destination was up against some of Queensland’s biggest

and strongest cross country schools at this year’s Queensland Athletes

All School Cross Country Championships. We had fantastic parent

support throughout the day and this reflected in the way students

competed in every age group. The overall result was down to a team

effort which included some notable results -

Girls:

Under 6 – Hanako 3rd, Erika 6th, Cedar 9th & Abbie 11th (3rd Place

Team Medal), Under 7 – Yumi 9th, Under 9 – Olivia 12th, Mackenzie 23rd,

Ella 26th & Grace 28th, Under 10 – Tara 30th & Under 12 – Hannah 33rd

Boys:

Under 6 – Mitchell 7th, Isaac 11th & Daniel 13th (2nd Place Team Medal),

Under 7 – Thomas 4th, Jireh 7th & Joseph 11th (1st Place Team Medal),

Under 8 – Asher 15th, Under 9 – Roman 29th & Under 10 – Hugo 22nd.

Most notably was how well students performed as a team. Overall Wishart placed 3rd

out of 43 other primary schools from across the state. This result was made possible

because of how many students from Wishart placed in the top half of competitors.

Towards the end of May the Wishart State School Netball squad made up of nearly

100 students from Years 1 to 6 took part at the Downey Park Netball Association

Club Carnival. It was a great showing of the Wishart School spirit with former

students and current parents coaching, umpiring and mentoring several teams

across the day.

A successful Semester 1 Interschool Sport season came to a close in May. A special

mention has to go to all these students for having a go and representing our school

at various venues around the district. We also had Wishart A Netball team win a

premiership.

To finish the month of May we had Emilia make the U12 Metropolitan

East Girls Football Team. She was picked as the team’s goalkeeper to

head to Sunshine Coast for the State Championships.

June

During the month of June, we had our annual Sports Days for 2018.

These days were contested well with many students endeavouring to

participate in 100m, 200m, 800m, Long Jump, High Jump, Shot Put,

Discus, Tunnel Ball and Relays. Well done to all of the students who put in so much effort during PE lessons to be

ready for the event. Winning house on Sports Day – Senior - Mooloola

The Cross Country season came to a close for Wishart State School at the 2018 Queensland Athletes All Schools Cross Country

Relay Championships. Students had to battle the hilly grounds of Nudgee College at Boondall. Teams of three students went up

against schools from across the state which included age groups from Prep to Year 6. The Wishart team had some great results –

Girls under 7 team – 2nd

Place Silver – Grace, Xanthie and Yumi

Girls under 7 team – 3rd

Place Bronze – Hanako, Cedar and Erika

Girls under 9 Team – 2nd

Place Silver – Olivia, Grace and Mackenzie

Boys under 7 team – 3rd

Place Bronze –

Tom, Joseph and Jireh

July

The Wishart State School Netball squad of over 80 students from Years 1 to 6 competed at the Coorparoo and

Redlands Netball Carnivals and performed well considering they were up against club teams.

Over 50 students from Years 3 and 6 participated on stage in the annual Mt Gravatt Show for a third year. Students

performed a number of bush dances including the Heel and Toe and the Galopede. Our performances were also

interactive which saw many members of the audience join in the dancing festivities. I would like to thank all of the

students who took part and also the number of Wishart families who came along to support. Overall, the students

had an enjoyable day and represented our school with pride. It was a fun way to end the month of July.

August

Another big month for Wishart and Sport was the month

of August. Wishart State School Athletics Team

participated at the Mt Gravatt District Track and Field

Championships at the Queensland Sport and Athletics

Centre. Students competed against the best students

from across Mount Gravatt for a place in the District

Team to go on to the Metropolitan East Regional

Championships. As per tradition we had many strong

performances from students who have put many

hours into training before and after school. This year

goes down as one our most successful in recent

history with over 10 podium finishes and 12 students

gaining selection for the Mt Gravatt District Athletics

Team. Some notable efforts included –

Lachlan 3rd in Multi Event and 4th in High Jump (Selected in the District team)

Teagan 2nd in High Jump (Selected in the District team)

Damon 2nd in Discus

Aleksia 4th in Long Jump (Selected in the District team)

Willa 3rd in Long Jump (Selected in the District team)

Caitlin 2nd in Shot Put (Selected in the District team)

Adalena 2nd in 100m, 2nd in 200m and 2nd in Long Jump

(Selected in the District team)

Jai 2nd in Multi Event (Selected in the District team)

Kurt 1st Shot Put (Selected in the District team)

Summer 2nd in Long Jump (Selected in the District team)

Wilkin 4th in Long Jump (Selected in the District team)

Amy 100m (Selected in the District team)

Harry 100m & 800m (Selected in the District team)

The Wishart State School Bush Dance was held in the second week of August

and it was a great night. The Rantan Bush Band again joined us in a

celebration of the strength of the community we have here at Wishart.

Wishart State School competed in the Macgregor Netball Association Junior

Carnival. Wishart students from our Netball Squad again participated in

games across the day. All teams were successful and students thoroughly

enjoyed the competition.

Emilia was also successful in making the Mt Gravatt District and Qld School

Sports Presidents Regional Team. This team takes part in the Queensland

U12 Girls State Championships.

September and October

A massive year of netball at Wishart State School came to a

successful end at this year’s State Championships in Bundaberg.

After months of hard work both at trainings and in competition

two senior teams made the long trip to the Wide Bay Region to

compete against some of the state’s best teams.

Across the weekend Wishart White played in some challenging

games and were unfortunate to be edged out by a few points.

One point was the difference in a couple of games. As a team

they improved game by game and should be very proud of their

overall effort. They were resilient and persistent and out of 80

teams they placed in the top half.

The Wishart Blue Team finished 1st in their pool on the first day

winning all of their games placing them in Division 1 for day 2 of

the Cup. They successfully finished 2nd in their pool on the

Sunday which then put them through into a play-off for 3rd and

4th. The Wishart Blue won this exciting play-off. This result puts

Wishart 3rd in the state and in the top echelon of netballing

schools.

Finally, it is important to recognise all of the many former

students and parents, current parents, families and teachers who

provide so much support for netball at Wishart State School.

Without this help, students would not be able to take part in

competitions like this and achieve such fantastic results.

November

November saw Wishart State School compete at two major state

competitions, Touch Football and Swimming.

The Queensland Primary All Schools Touch Tournament was held at the

Cleveland Showgrounds with over 320 school teams from all across

Queensland participating in the competition. Wishart entered 5 teams with

most students playing touch for the first time. All of the teams performed

well and everyone involved from parents to students enjoyed the weekend

carnival. We had the Wishart Boys Team finish 2nd in their division on the

second day. The boys result highlighted an overall strong effort from the

school this year.

Wishart State School sent 38 athletes to the 2018 Queensland Primary Schools Swimming Relay Championships at

Chandler. Students from Years 4 to 6 participated in a field of 40 other schools from across Queensland. All teams

should be proud of their efforts as they went up against some of the strongest swimming schools from across the

state.

The end of the Interschool Sport season saw the Boys A Grade Basketball finish on top of their table. November saw

outstanding efforts both in the water and on the land for Wishart State School.

December

Following the Wishart tradition, our school Inter-house Swimming Carnivals will be held in the first weeks of

December. We look forward to those fun filled carnivals.

Summing up

Overall, it has been a great year for Wishart in various sporting

events. We have had so many highs which have included State

Championships top 5 finishes in Netball and Cross Country. There

are so many people to thank along with teachers, parents and

former students. Hopefully, I will catch up with you over the next

couple of weeks. Finally, it is goodbye to our Year 6 cohort of

2018. These students will leave with our best wishes and

congratulations on a wonderful year. I am sure future students to

come will only build on our ever-growing sporting culture. It has

been a privilege to be involved in the Wishart State School

community in 2018. I look forward to next year and many more ahead.
