Status of the experiment

• First retardation spectrum (of 124In) obtained in Nov. 2006

• Run on 35Ar unveiled some new problems

• Work was done to investigate these issues and perform the necessary upgrades

• Nov 2009; second run on 35Ar which showed that all of the upgrades made were successful; low level ionization prevented us from measuring a clean retardation spectrum

Experimental cycle

1. Ejection trigger from REXTRAP

2. Beamgate is triggered for a TOF separation

3. PDT is triggered to pulse down the ions

4. Cooling cycle in the cooler trap

5. Transfer to decay trap

6. Ions are kept in the decay trap for the measurement

7. The DAQ system is allowed to count; retardation power supply and DAQ are synchronized (to have a correspondence between time and retardation voltage)

8. Ions are ejected downwards

0s ~ 100 s ~ 1s ~ 5s

flexible; experimental cycles (e.g. excitations) can be changed easily

Disadvantages

many cables needed

overview of the cycle can be lost

Situation (of programs) 2 years ago

Separate controls for different devices, on different computers

• HV control (with remote control via VI server)• Timing• Scan.GUI• Oscilloscope

(Easy) operation of the system was only possible thanks to remote desktopping

To-do list

• HV control– add the odd power supply (three electrodes remaining)– polish the instrument drivers

• TrapControl; – Work on the interface for the trap electrodes– Implement an FPGA card?

• Scan.GUI– Polish & finish it

• Use data from CS when taking data (for logging purposes)

• Start using the DSC engine• Tune the basics: CAN communication when restarting the system..

Conclusion & Outlook

• The most important thing for us: it is working• CS gives us more flexibility; every device can be

easily accessed on every computer

• Outlook– Finalizing some of the GUIs– Tune some drivers a bit more– I can tidy up (and make available) some CS

classes (and drivers) if people need it.
