The Mughals would rule nearly 160 million people over an area of 4 million square kilometres

THE name “Mughal” is the Persian word for “Mongol”, the Central Asian tribe after whom Mongolia is

named. The Mughals originated in Central Asia and were descended from the Mongol ruler, Genghis Khan (1155-1226), and Timur Gurkani (1336-1405), the great conqueror of Asia, who would leave pyramids of skulls outside the cities he had conquered.

The Timurids were immensely proud of their Mongolian pedigree, and it was the memory of Timur’s raids on India in the 14th century that spurred his grand-son, Zahir al-Din Muhammad or Babur - the ruler of Kabul - to invade the Indian peninsula. Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi, the Sultan of Delhi, at Panipat in 1526 and founded the Mughal Empire.

The Mughal Empire rose to be one of India’s greatest epochs, airbrushed into insignificance by British colonialism. In their day, the Mughals successfully ruled hundreds of millions of people, and administered millions of square kilometres of territory from India to Afghanistan.

The magnificent cities, mausoleums and gardens built in places such as Delhi, Agra, Srinagar and Lahore, are a legacy of Mughal rule from the 16th to the 18th centuries; centuries which saw a flourishing of the arts and architecture, creating the distinctive “Mughal style”.

Babur ruled until 1530. He was succeeded by his eldest son, Humayun. He was on the throne until 1540 when he was ousted by Sher Shah Suri, the Afghan ruler. Humayun passed on in 1556 after a second period in power from 1545.

Shah Suri’s reign proved to be a landmark one. He established an efficient administration and set up a just revenue collection system. Numerous public works were carried out: the planting of trees, wells and the building of Sarai, or inns. Roads were laid out, especially the Delhi-Kabul highway.

Humayun’s heir, Akbar the Great, built on the foundations of his predecessors. After several campaigns, he subdued most of India. He also adopted a conciliatory policy towards the Rajputs, the patrilineal Hindu rulers. Akbar was not only a great conqueror, but a capable organiser and a great administrator.

He set up a host of institutions and an administrative bureaucracy which was so successful it operated even under British rule. Akbar stands out due to his liberal policies towards non-Muslims and the Mansabdari, a system that integrated state functions. Akbar died in 1605, nearly 50 years after taking power.

He was succeeded by his son, Salim, who took the title “Jehangir”, “Conqueror of the World”. Though lacking his father’s drive, he did consolidate rule in Bengal. He was regarded as an honest man, tolerant towards other faiths. However, relations with the Sikhs were strained. Sikh Guru, Arjun Dev, was executed for giving aid to Khusrau, his rebellious son. Art, literature and architecture prospered under Jehangir, and the gardens in Kashmir are his legacy.

Jehangir was succeeded by his second son Khurram in 1629. He took the name of Shah Jahan, the “Emperor of the World”. He expanded the Empire to Kandahar

in the north and conquered most of southern India. Shah Jahan was called the “architect king”. But above all else, he is remembered for the Taj Mahal, the white marble mausoleum constructed for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, along the banks of Agra’s Yamuna River.

In 1658, Aurangzeb (Muhi al-Din Muhammad), became the sixth emperor. He ruled the entire Indian subcontinent for 49 years, hiring more Hindus in his government than any other Mughal. As the last powerful Mughal, Aurangzeb also compiled the Futawwa-i-Alamgiri (a book on Hanafi law) and established a Shari’ah-centric society.

He expanded the Empire to 4 million square kilometres, ruling over nearly 160 million subjects. Under his reign, India surpassed Qing China to become the world’s largest economy.

Aurangzeb was noted for his piety; he memorized the Quran and avoided luxury. His expenses were covered by his own earnings, from the sewing of caps and the trade of self-penned Qur’an’s.

After the demise of Aurangzeb, the Mughals started to slowly lose power. In the 19th century, the British East India company landed, and began to exploit and undermine the sub-continent. When, in May 1857, the last Mughal emperor, Zafar, was declared

the leader of an uprising against the British, he was doomed. Four months later, the British took Delhi, the Mughal capital, with catastrophic results.

The author of The Last Mughal, William Dalrymple, would note that as Muslim prestige and learning sank, and Hindu confidence increased, (the disaster would be that) Hindus and Muslims would grow gradually apart as British policies of divide and rule found willing collaborators amongst the religious bigots.

“The rip in the closely-woven fabric of Delhi’s composite culture, opened in 1857, slowly widened into a great gash and at Partition in 1947 finally broke in two,” is his sad conclusion.

And as the Indian Muslim elite emigrated en masse to Pakistan after the British-inspired Partition, Dalrymple observes that the time would soon come when it would become impossible to think that Hindu sepoys could ever have rallied to the Red Fort carrying the standard of a Muslim Emperor and joining with their Muslim brothers in an attempt to revive the great Mughal Empire.

22 Jamad ul-Awwal – Death of Sayyidina Abu Bakr [ra], close friend of the Prophet [SAW], his father-in-law and the first Caliph. He hid with the Prophet [SAW] on Jabl Thawr from the Quraish on their escape to Madinah in 622 CE. Sayyidina Abu Bakr passed on in 634 CE.

8 Dhul Hijjah – Hujjaj move to Mina from Makkah.

9 Dhul Hijjah – Hujjaj move from Mina to ‘Arafat for Wuquf until Maghrib.

10 Dhul Hijjah – After Maghrib Hujjaj move to Muzdalifah for collecting pebbles, to Mina for pelting of jamarat, and then to Makkah for Tawaf ul-Ifadah. For the rest of the Islamic world, 10 Dhul Hijja marks ‘Eid ul-Adha.
