Young adults. Coben, a down-to-earth writer, the winner of the Edgar Award, the Shamus Award and the Anthony Award — the first author to receive all three — with books published in 40 languages and 47 million copies in print, and best sellers in more than a dozen countries, explained why he has added a whole new realm to his literary world, during a conversation the other morning. "I have four children," Coben said, "ages, 17, 14, 12 and 10, and I wanted to do something special for them. So, I created a new character, a teenage boy, Mickey Bolitar, and placed him in a young adult novel, 'Shelter.' And for my regular read- ers, Mickey is the nephew of one of my well-known characters, Myron Bolitar." The language and characteris- tics of Coben's children helped the author to create a boy named Mick- ey. "Whenever my kids were in the car, I'd listen a lot to their conver- sations, their ideas and thoughts, and before long, I had more than an idea or two about teenagers. And I also wanted to develop some new characters." The suspense writer also devel- oped the spooky moments in "Shel- ter," by remembering "the spooky houses that kids used to talk about and asking themselves and their friends, "What if ...?' That's how the book sort of opens up." Despite the fact that his charac- ter, Myron, may somewhat fade in his future books, it appears that Mickey, Myron's nephew, will have a whole new literary career. As in Coben's best-selling book, "Mold Tight," where Mickey was introduced, and now, when he is his own man in "Shelter," the two do not get along. "First of all," explained Coben, "Myron came from a caring family; his parents were a loving couple. And Mickey's parents were just the opposite, which turned him into a different type of person. And," laughed the author, "everybody loves Myron. That is, everybody except Mickey. It'll be fun. We'll find out for sure one day whether or not they'll get together." One of Coben's books, "Tell No One," was adapted to the screen in France. It had English subtitles.
