Preparing for Worship
Members of the parish light the four candles that were lit on the day of dedication of our church, April 7, 1991. We recall that on that day, the altar and the walls of the church were anointed with Sacred Chrism, and that our font was blessed for the celebration of baptism. We also recall the founding of our parish on January 6, 1960, and we look forward to worshiping God as a parish community in this renewed space for years to come.

Concluding Rites
After the prayer, the bishop, ministers, and a small gathering of parishioners representing the parish as a whole, carry the Blessed Sacrament in procession to the new Eucharistic Chapel. The sanctuary lamp, which burns perpetually as a sign of Christ’s permanent dwelling in our midst, is lit and carried in procession. When the procession reaches the chapel, the bishop places the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle and incenses it. All pause for a moment of quiet prayer before returning to the church. Please join in singing the repeated refrain, used often at our parish Holy Thursday liturgy.

All stand to sing the hymn of praise. Mr. David Haas, Youth Minster at Our Lady’s Immaculate Heart from 1980-1981, composed this text and arranged this familiar hymn tune for today’s liturgy.

Greeting
Water is blessed, and we are sprinkled with the blessed water as a reminder of our own baptismal identity in Jesus Christ. We remember that this building houses the Church of God, and we recommit ourselves to follow Christ’s call together.

Blessing of the New Ambo The proclamation of the word of God is introduced by the bishop. The readers and the psalmist take the Lectionary to the bishop, who shows it to the people, saying:
May the word of God always be heard in this place, as it unfolds the mystery of Christ before you and achieves your salvation within the Church. Assembly: Amen. By this action, and by the proclamation of the word of God which follows, the new Ambo is blessed.

The new cross will be encountered whenever someone enters our church. It will also be the cross we will venerate on Good Friday. At the cross, the bishop prays:
Blessed are you, Lord God, Father all-holy, for your boundless love. The tree, once the source of shame and death for humankind,
has become the cross of our redemption and life. When his hour had come to return to you in glory,
the Lord Jesus, our King, our Priest, and our Teacher, freely mounted the scaffold of the cross and made it his royal throne, his altar of sacrifice, his pulpit of truth.
On the cross, lifted above the earth, he triumphed over our age-old enemy.
Cloaked in his own blood, he drew all things to himself. On the cross, he opened out his arms and offered you his life:
the sacrifice of the new Law that gives to the sacraments their saving power. On the cross, he proved what he had prophesied:
the grain of wheat must die to bring forth an abundant harvest. Father, we honor this cross as the sign of our redemption. May we reap the harvest of salvation planted in pain by Christ Jesus. May our sins be nailed to his cross, the power of life released,
pride conquered, and weakness turned to strength. May the cross be our comfort in trouble, our refuge in the face of danger,
our safeguard on life’s journey, until you welcome us to our heavenly home. Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Assembly: Amen

Profession of Faith
Liturgy of the Eucharist Preparation of the Gifts and Altar Here at This Table
9
The altar is dressed and prepared. Gifts of bread and wine for the celebration of the Eucharist are brought forward, along with the symbols of our own blessings which we place in the collection baskets. After the gifts and altar are prepared, the bishop incenses the altar, gifts, Ambo, and cross, and the deacon incenses the entire assembly. The new symbols in our worship space, the Ambo and cross, along with the Altar, are incensed to remind us of the sacred mysteries which they signify. We reverence the bread and wine with incense because our faith tells us that these simple foods will become for us the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Likewise, the whole assembly is reverenced, reminding us that we, too, are to be transformed into the body of Christ, broken and poured out for all.
