Hi. My name is Raymond and I am 13 years old. I have been a Chatterbox member for quite a while now and really
enjoy it. I am one of the film crew who helps make all the films and deal with the I.T stuff in the group.
When I am not at school or at The Chatterboxes I enjoy playing computer games. Little Big Planet 3 is my favourite game and I would play it all the time if I could. At the moment I find it hard to go out on my own as I get a bit scared of the big wide world. I am hoping
to work on this and become more independent in the future. People at The Chatterbox project say I am kind, friendly and always giving advice to Chatterbox members about challenges they may be going through in life. I think it is important to be a good friend.
Unfortunately I have dealt with a lot of bullying in the past at my
primary and secondary school. I am not
being bullied anymore and I wanted to share my advice with you.
It can make you feel like the entire world is against you but try not to take things the bullies say to heart;
remember they probably have something bad going on in their lives
so they are trying to make themselves feel better.
I spend time in Safe Places at my school like the computer room and I am making new friends and building stronger friendships with old friends. It is important to share your worries with friends or adults and know that
you are not alone. Talking to people really helped me.
My name is Gizmo and I am deaf. I am not the only one though. 360 million people in the world have some sort of disabling hearing loss; 32 million of these
are children. My hearing loss is due to sound not getting through my ears easily (this is called conductive deafness). Other people’s hearing may be affected by sound not being
picked up well by the hair cells in the cochlea or the hearing nerve (this is known as Sensorineural or nerve deafness).
Sometimes there are
problems with our ears before we are born.It can be passed on
through the family, caused by being born very early or caused by an infection caught before being born. Lots of adults
become deaf because of listening to too
much loud noise, or a head injury, or just because they are
getting older. Some children become deaf when they are young - their deafness may be genetic, or caused by an illness or infection like meningitis, measles or mumps, or caused by a
medicine that was given to treat a serious illness.
Some of us communicate with
British Sign Language, some of us use speech and sign language. Up to 250,000 people use
some British Sign Language everyday.
Hearing aids come in all shapes and sizes. They can be worn on the body, behind the ear or all inside the
ear!

The wonderful CRUMBS project supports people in the workplace through a pre-employment programme of learning. They learn how to bake delicious cakes, make yummy sandwiches and other tasty nibbles and how to deal with customers in
the community. All trainees are local adults with mental illness, learning disabilities, stabilised addiction or acquired head injuries.
As well as learning about catering, people who are involved learn new skills like team work and confidence building.
For more info visit: www.crumbs.org.uk
Bournemouth People First is a charity run for and by people with
learning disabilities. They help each other to speak up, lead change and provide
services to local organisations. They alsoput on events, run projects about Keeping Safe, put on brilliant club nights for their members and tell services what people
with learning disabilities think.
We work really closely with them with the Safe Places Scheme and also with transitions and think that they are
amazingly inspiring. For more information:

Poppy and Max’s Problem PageDear Poppy,
I love Christmas parties at my school but the music is
too loud and sometimes hurts my ears.
What do I do?From Lucy
Dear Max,
I am scared on the snow and ice incase I slip over. Do you
have any suggestions of what I should do?
From Thomas
Dear Lucy,
You can still enjoy Christmas parties. Why don’t you ask the teacher if it is possible to turn the music down or you could wear ear defenders; they will
muffle the noise. Share your concerns with your teacher. They will try to help.
Perhaps next year you could help organise a Christmas party where you
could be in control.
From Poppy
Dear Thomas,
This time of year can be quite stressful because of the weather. Make sure you
wear shoes with good grip and lace them up well. You could also ask a friend or
family member to join you when you are walking so you can hold onto each other. When it is really icey; only go outside if you really have to. You could also visit a ice skating rink to practice being around
ice. From Max
