UmhlangaSOUTH AFRICA

The greater Umhlanga area extends from the mangove forest at the mouth of the Umgeni River in the south, to the mouth of the Tongaat River in the north. This gorgeous stretch of coastline is KwaZulu-Natal’s most exclusive playground, with postcard-perfect beaches, high-end shopping, vibrant nightlife and fine dining.

UMHLANGA TOURISM Visitor’s Guide | 3

Umhlanga, which lies just 15km north of Durban, was initially inhabited by the San people as there was a generous supply of fresh water flowing through the adjacent forests into the Umhlanga lagoon. In later years, it was inhabited by the Zulu people

who lived off the abundance of fish in the sea and wild game in the area. In 1869, the first beach cottage in Umhlanga, the Oyster Lodge, was built. Approximately

80 years later in 1947, it was replaced by Umhlanga’s most prominent hotel, the Oyster Box. Umhlanga Rocks became a village in 1931 and the famous red and white lighthouse was constructed in 1954. The lighthouse was erected to warn ships about the dangers of the rocks along the coastal areas of Umhlanga.

There are large numbers of marine, wildlife and bird species in Umhlanga. These can be found in the local nature reserves, lagoon, sea and forests. There are guided walks for visitors and tourists. Phone Umhlanga Tourism for contact details of local guides.

Over the years, Umhlanga has become the most sought after holiday and business destination in South Africa. It boasts some of the most exclusive hotels, self-catering apartments, sophisticated guesthouses and a world-class beachfront promenade that spans the entire length of this resort paradise. Fine dining, beautiful shopping malls and many fabulous suburbs are all part of the Umhlanga scene.

I extend a warm welcome to the weary travellers who visit this wonderful region, and invite them to unwind and enjoy the paradise known simply as ‘Umhlanga’.

Welcome to Umhlanga!A message from the Chairman of Umhlanga Tourism, Peter Rose

Umhlanga’s fascinating history plays an integral part in one’s appreciation of the wonderful province of KwaZulu-Natal. The Umhlanga area is a great tourist destination with a sub-tropical climate, year-round warm waters and golden sands that stretch for many kilometres in each direction.

There are close to 300 days of sunshine a year, and the seawater is warm enough to swim in throughout summer and winter. Umhlanga Main Beach and the neighbouring

Bronze Beach to the north are protected by shark nets and stationed by well-trained professional lifeguards. The 2.7km O’Connor Promenade was recently upgraded, and runs from Durban View Park to Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. The promenade is a favourite for walkers and runners, and is dotted with restaurants, takeaways, ablution facilities and ice cream sellers. The boat launch site at Granny’s Pool adjacent to the lifesavers’ clubhouse allows visitors to get out onto the water to fish from fishing charter boats.

To the north, the seaside village of Umdloti is set against green hills and lush vegetation. It has some of the best beaches in the area, with a rock-enclosed tidal pool and a wide lagoon. There is excellent fishing off the rocks and safe swimming.

Further along the coast are Westbrook and Tongaat. These beaches are quiet and offer great swimming and surfing, as well as a launching area for boats.

BeacHes & OceanUmhlanga Rocks is situated on the edge of the Indian Ocean, and its beaches offer excellent swimming and surfing within walking distance of the Umhlanga village centre.

Snorkelling and divingThere are a few good dive spots right off Umhlanga, and the best diving conditions are to be found in the winter months. The T-Barge, Lighthouse Reef, the Trawler of Fontao and Dolphin Reef attract everything from moray eels to tropical fish. One of the best snorkelling spots in the area is at the northern end of Umdloti’s Beach Road. A line of rocks encloses an enormous tidal pool, home to large cowries, crayfish and a variety of tropical fish.

Learn all about sharksThe KZN Sharks Board (KZNSB) in Umhlanga has a display hall with life-size replicas of sharks, fish and rays, and offers a 25-minute

presentation on the work it does and the importance of sharks in the marine ecosystem. You can also experience a 20-minute shark dissection, where you can learn about – and smell – the internal machinery of the ocean’s fiercest predator. The KZNSB services shark nets, which provide protection against shark attacks at 38 localities.

The presentation and shark dissection is offered at 9am and 2pm Tuesdays to Thursdays and at 1pm on the first Sunday of each month.

Despite Umhlanga’s growth boom in the last twenty years, it’s still home to some pristine natural areas. The O’Connor Promenade ends where the Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve Trail begins.

enjoy UmHlanga’s natUral Heritage

There is a well-marked path that winds through pretty coastal forest on boardwalks that cross the Ohlange River on its way to the lagoon, buttressed by dunes. Benches and picnic

spots are dotted throughout, and you can follow the trail to reach the beach and the lagoon, and the remains of a Stone Age seashell midden can also be found to the north of the lagoon.

The adjacent Hawaan Forest Reserve is inland of Umhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve. This indigenous woodland has remained in its natural state for centuries, and is characterised by important species of trees with tropical attributes, and many small animals. Entry is restricted, so phone ahead to book a guided walk. Contact: 031 201 3126/562 0257

Hazelmere Dam and Resort, a few kilometres inland from Verulam, is a favourite watersport destination. There are also picnic spots, and game such as zebra and wildebeest can be seen. Dudley Pringle Dam north of Umdloti is another dam with prolific birdlife.

Situated on the north bank of the Umgeni River, the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve is a 76-hectare reserve with the largest population of mangrove trees in the Durban area. A raised boardwalk through the mangroves gives visitors the opportunity to spot many rare bird species and the lopsided fiddler crabs that call the mangroves home. The reserve is open to the general public on the third Saturday of each month from 8am to 1pm. Contact: 082 559 2839

Gateway into AfricaThe Umhlanga coastline is the perfect stepping stone to the rest of southern Africa, connected to all the major destinations by road and air. It is a short drive to two World Heritage sites: the majestic mountains of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park in the west and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in the north, which is approximately a three-hour drive by car or motorboat.

Wonderful birding spectacleIn mid-October every year, millions of Barn Swallows arrive in KwaZulu-Natal from Europe, before flying back in mid-April. Every evening just before sunset, the swallows fly in from all directions and gather together into a giant, swirling flock over the Lake Victoria Wetlands at Mount Moreland Village near Umdloti. As the sun sets, the entire flock drops almost as one into the reed bed to roost for the night. There is an elevated viewing site over the reed beds, which is accessible to visitors every day. To get to the viewing site, take the Umdloti/Verulam exit from the N2 north and turn left towards the town of Verulam. After about 1km, turn right onto a dirt road and follow the signs for about 4km to Mount Moreland village. For more information, call Hillary Vickers on 031 568 1671 or visit www.barnswallow.co.za.

Hit the wavesThe Umhlanga area has some powerful waves, and the best surf spots are at Umhlanga Main Beach, Umdloti and Westbrook. The waves at Umdloti and Umhlanga are classic beach breaks that work on any size swell from two to six foot. Westbrook is a fickle right hander that breaks along a shelf of rocks. All these spots work on light offshore winds, and conditions are best in winter (between April and August), especially in the early morning when the land breeze blows. There are loads of surf shops in the area where you can buy all the gear and find out about lessons for beginners. When the surf’s not great, the Wave House at Gateway has standing waves suitable for newbies and advanced surfers.

Durban’s iconic Moses Mabhida StadiumA visit to the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban, just 15 minutes south of Umhlanga, is a must-do. This incredible facility was a key stadium during the 2010 Soccer World Cup and hosted a semi-final. Visitors can take the SkyCar to a viewing platform on the top of the iconic arch 106 metres above the pitch for a 360º degree view.

For the brave visitor, the Big Swing is the largest swing of any kind in the world. Jump into the void and swing out in a huge 220-metre arc under the arch.

From pavement sellers and local crafts to boutique shopping and malls where everything is on offer, Umhlanga is a shopping Mecca.

Gateway Theatre of Shopping is the biggest mall in the southern hemisphere, and over two million people visit it every month, thanks to a wide range of shops, restaurants

for every taste and fun activities, such as a skatepark, funfair and cinemas.

La Lucia Mall is a lovely suburban mall with a relaxed atmosphere and big brand stores.

An array of local arts and crafts is available from shops, markets and pavement sellers in the area. Zulu crafters are especially adept in beadwork, weaving, clay pots and wooden animal carvings. Many local crafts recycle used materials, such as plastic bags, oil tins and beer cans, turning waste into art.
