Sunday 22nd November saw the staging of the inaugural “Northern Gateway Club Chal-lenge” at Keilor Bowls Club. An initiative of KBC, when first approached the executive of Northern Gateway agreed with the concept, but added with a wry smile “good luck with organising it”

They didn’t count on the tenacity of KBC members who got behind the idea and gave their time to make the event the success that it was.

Twenty-two clubs from Northern Gateway Region entered teams of 4 to play 4 games of 10 ends to determine who took home the perpetual shield for 12 months. In addition, the Presidents of each club were invited to the lunch which was enjoyed by over 130 people.

The idea for the Presidents to be invited was so they could meet the other Presidents and bounce ideas off each other regarding the issues that they all have at their respective clubs.

Ideal weather and our first class greens to bowl on

The beautiful table setting, in our matching club colours

Cyd and Joan Wilson are ready to wait on the tables.

The ladies in the “engine room”, prepare enough meals to feed an army. But army food was never like what was served to the waiting.

Norma Webb had the job to fold the many red, white and blue serviettes that adorned the table settings.

The weather was kind to our Pennant players for Round 8. Our Keilor 1 Side played at Sunshine RSL with an overall win of 67 shots. Lorraine Henneken’s rink of Joe Bayona (3), Lyn Martin (2) and Iggy Wierzbowski were

the biggest winners this round with a score of 9 – 49. Max Knights rink of Gino Persico (3), Julie Isergin (2) and

Cheryl Anthony (L) had a very good win 31-10 and Trevor Harmers rink of Rae Knowles (3), Jennifer Knight (2)

all. Next week they are playing Werribee at Keilor

Side 2 played Buckley Park 2 at Home and lost by only 5 shots overall. Cecile Hecht skipped the winning rink 19 – 17, Maureen Sutton (3), Pat Black (2) and Peter Fisher (L). Well done. John Hutton’s rink lost by only 4 shots and Leonie

late notice Tuesday morning.— Selection Committee.

    Challenge

This event would not have been the success it was without the magnificent efforts of over 40 members of KBC who gave their time in the lead up and on the day. There are too many to list individually, but it would be remiss of me if I didn’t make special mention of Helen Duddington and Diane Mar-shall who spent hours leading up to the day preparing and then success-fully presenting a lovely 2 course meal.

To all their helpers in the kitchen and waiting on the tables, the bar staff, the match committee, the scorers and everyone that contributed in any way, I thank you.

You have all shown what can be achieved when we all work together.

    You should be justifiably proud.

    Thanks again — Peter Livy

Thanks to all who have contributed to the many pictures in this edition.

Without the members input of these photos and articles we couldn’t pub-lish the stories belonging to K.B.C. Cheers Fred.

You may wonder what some members get up to in their spare time.

Every Wednesday night Rod and Jared Threlfall go to QuizaMe, a computerised trivia night at the Laurel Hotel in Ascot Vale, with friends.

Over the last 12 to 15 weeks they have either won or come second. This qualified them to attend the Metropolitan Tournament at Dingley International Hotel on Friday the 13th of November.

As it was Friday the 13th it was played as a ‘Spook Night Event’ with the 62 teams dressing up in scary costumes. Rod and Jared’s group dressed as The Addams Family.

The ‘Addams Family’ came ninth in a field of 62 in the Trivia, but won the best group fancy dress and won $250.00.

I don’t think you will have too much trouble picking out ‘ Gomez’ Jared in the picture but you may have a little difficulty recognising Rod, who shaved off a 35-year-old beard for the event.

Rod’s son Nicholas (who has played social bowls at Keilor) is Pugsley in front.

And just one quote from the many of the Addam’s Family

MORTICIA — “You have placed Uncle Fester under some strange sexual spell — I respect that!”

UMPIRES NEW ACCREDIATION SYSTEM There has been a lot of information over the last 12 months or so about the

Bowls Australia new Umpire accreditation system.

This new system is based on three stages of training with each stage having its own

accreditation. The stages are: 1. Marker 2. Measurer and 3. National Umpire.

A person can opt to be qualified as Maker and or Measurer only. However to achieve

National Umpire accreditation all three levels must be undertaken with the first 2 pre-

cursors to the final stage. At each level an accreditation is issued to successful candi-

dates which allows them to officiate up to National level. The training is designed to

    meet this level of officiating.

The new system is competency based, meaning it is more practically orientated than

the previous system. The training is interactive but still very comprehensive. Each ele-

ment is designed to take approximately 4 hours. Each of the three sessions can be

conducted over a period of time. Having been through the full 3 sessions twice I can

say it is a good system if well delivered.

Each Region is appointing specific people to conduct this training. In Northern Gate-

way Bob Lamb and Brian Mason together with myself have been asked by Bob Carl-

son to be the designated trainers to conduct training sessions as required.

The three of us have undertaken specific training ourselves and after one more day

will be able to schedule sessions, hopefully early in 2016.

I know some members have already expressed interest in this training but if any other

members wish to be involved now or in the future, I am happy to arrange a meeting to

go over it in m ore detail.
