What drew me the most to the story of The Wizard of Oz were thethemes of family (both the ones we are born into and the ones weare drawn to throughout our lives) and the meaning of ‘home’.For all that this is a classic tale Dorothy is very much a modernyouth, struggling to find who she is and what is her ‘home’. Shewants to escape, and goes on an incredible journey to discoverthat what she is searching for is already there.
L. Frank Baum’s tale of a spunky girl who goes on an incredible journey started as a seriesof books, then became a much celebrated motion picture, then a stage musical. It hasinspired many more tales, from Return to Oz to the current phenomenon that is Wicked. Thetale of a little girl and her four-legged companion who go over the rainbow, meet somewonderful friends, take on the Wicked Witch, and then return to their family appeals to oursense of adventure, and the warmth and comfort of home is one to which we can all relate.
Our 2012/13 season is lovingly dedicated to our dear friend, colleague and volunteerCheryl Hutcherson. Cheryl had a very special way of making us all feel like we were home, and that she was part of our family. She was a lover of musical theatre and will always bewith the Vancouver theatre community, like a handprint on our hearts.

L. Frank Baum is an American Author of children’s literature. Heis best known for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written in 1900,but can also be credited for his 55 novels, 9 sequences, 82 shortstories, 200 poems, and countless scripts.
Baum was born May 15, 1856 in Chittenango, New York wherehe lived with his mother and father and nine siblings. He washome schooled his entire life and was never one to go out androll in the grass. At a young age he took an interest in literature. He began to take old classics and turn the old and grim storyinto a pleasant fairytale that children could relate too.
Baum started his education at the age of 25 in New York City studying theatre. He thenworked in the New York theatre community for a few years as an Opera Theatre Managerand continued writing his own plays that he often performed in, such as The Maid of Arran(1882). In 1883 Baum decided to leave the theatre community in New York and move withhis wife, Maud Gage, to South Dakota where they would later raise four children. In SouthDakota, Baum opened a family run department store that failed, was publisher of anewspaper, Saturday Pioneer, that failed, and then moved to Chicago in search of morefinancial success, which also failed. It was then that Baum started writing the nursery stories
that he read to his children. In 1887 MotherGoose in Prose was published; it becamethe best-selling book of the year with anestimated 175,000 copies sold.
In 1900 The Wonderful Wizard of Oz waspublished and was adapted into a musicalin 1903. At that point, Baum gave up onany other business venture and focusedsolely on his writing.
The Wizard of Oz is an adaptation of L.Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Ozwhich has since been published countlesstimes. This special story evokes laughterand tears and also challenges the audienceto explore the difficult themes of love, endurance, personal character and selfacceptance.
