Present…

Wizard of Oz, Young Performers’ Edition!

Brookside Elementary’s Spring Musical! Process Dandylyon Drama is an educationally based program that believes in including every child.                         Over the next 8 weeks we’ll learn how to audition, rehearse, and perform a musical. We’ll                               explore a well-loved story, Wizard of Oz! We’ll learn basic acting, performance etiquette in a                             supportive and encouraging environment. We’ll top it off with props, costumes, lights, and                         sound.  Parent Involvement and Mandatory Parent Meeting This production relies on at least one parent of every actor to volunteer in some way.                                Opportunities range in skills and time commitment. Most are very simple and require only a few                               hours of your time. You will get to sign up for your preferred job at the Parent Meeting and later                                       on via an online sign-up. One parent of each student must attend the Parent Meeting on                               Tuesday, March 6th @ 7pm in the BKS Cafeteria. Your student is welcome to attend. Auditions Every student to sign up will be given a part in the show. We teach the students how to audition                                       as they audition and it’s a fun process. Students must be present and participate at all 3 days of                                     auditions unless otherwise noted on their conflict calendar. On Monday, March 19th, we’ll play                           lots of drama games to get to know each other and the show and learn how to put our best foot                                         forward. On Tuesday, March 20th students should come prepared with a memorized                       monologue that is no longer than 1-minute in length (examples are provided in this packet, more                               are available online at the Dandylyon Drama website).   Dandylyon Drama does everything possible to help students feel comfortable and ready to share their monologue. Auditions are closed to other students and parents in order to put the least amount of pressure on the students (however a PTA chaperone is always present.) On Wednesday, March 21st, students will learn music and sing solos in a group setting. By Thursday’s practice, most if not all students will be done auditioning and the Director will be guiding kids through the story of the show, how they will learn their part, and be issued a script.   Rehearsals Rehearsals will take place at Brookside Elementary in CAFETERIA/MUSIC ROOM. Each student is required to have a pencil, a snack, a water bottle, a book/something to keep them busy during down time. A great attitude is required every day of rehearsal. Please wear comfortable and appropriate clothing; no short skirts, flip flops, high-heeled shoes, tight pants, snow boots, etc.  Conflicts and Mandatory Dates Please fill out the Conflict Calendar completely with anything that might conflict with rehearsals. We do our best to schedule your student for days that they are available. Your conflicts don’t negatively affect casting so please give us all the information you have and let us know when you might be expecting a sport schedule to come in. Actors will be called 2 to 3 times a week on average. Students interested in participating should at least be available 2 days a week and for all mandatory rehearsals. In order to participate in the Musical, your students must be available to attend rehearsal on the mandatory dates so please make arrangements now. (See attached calendar.)   Communications The Brookside Musical Producers will communicate with you via email from [email protected] and via an online newsletter. Please make sure that you provide your primary email address and any secondary email addresses of parents or guardians or caregivers that requires this information. Regarding any emergencies, the primary contact will always be contacted first. Feel free to contact the Brookside Producers at [email protected] regarding any questions or concerns regarding child absence/early or late arrivals, volunteer job or chaperone shifts, issues with lost script, or alternate plans for pick up of your child. All questions regarding the performance itself, such as casting, questions about script/lines, or song or choreography, must be directed to Melani Lyons at [email protected].

THIS PROGRAM IS SPONSORED BY THE BROOKSIDE PTA.

Tuition & Refunds Refunds for tuition cannot be given after a child starts this Musical Program.   Scholarships For those who are having financial hardship, scholarships are available. On the registration form,                           please make sure to check the box that says, “I need a scholarship for my child’s participation,                                 please contact me.”  Drop Off and Pick Up ● We hope that all of our students will be in class promptly each day. Please let us know if your

child will be late to rehearsal or if you need to pick your child up early. ● Students may not be left unattended outside of class times. Students must be picked up

promptly at the end of rehearsal and be signed out by an approved parent or guardian.

Special Needs Dandylyon Drama Instructors are able to create ways for children with mild to moderate disabilities                             to succeed. Please write down any and all medications, disabilities and any physical, emotional or                             behavioral challenges your child may have and discuss them with your child’s Instructor prior to the                               first day of class. This information will make our class instruction more effective and your child’s                               experience more rewarding. All staff and Instructors follow Dandylyon Drama’s Confidentiality                     Policy, so your privacy will be protected.  Absence and Illness ● Instructors do appreciate notice if your student must miss class for any reason. Class Observation During the course of this program, all Musical rehearsals will be closed. We have found that students often participate more freely in class activities without parent observation. The Dandylyon Drama Directors or PTA Producers may ask you to wait in the lobby/outside of the Cafeteria or other assigned rehearsals space if you prefer to stay on site during Rehearsals. Parents are allowed to observe and may be asked to assist in class from time to time in certain classes if they are scheduled as a Chaperone for that particular day. Please do not bring other children with you if you are observing or chaperoning class.    Code of Conduct We at Dandylyon Drama value each and every individual. In order to create an environment where                               each student has the freedom to grow, both as a performer and as an individual, we do not tolerate                                     the following: ● Fighting with another student, staff, volunteer or parent ● Destruction or theft of Dandylyon Drama or school property or materials ● Disrespect towards oneself or others ● Use of inappropriate language and/or innuendo ● Racial or sexual harassment (including inappropriate physical contact)

Student Responsibilities and Expectations (Parents are expected to read and enforce these policies with their children) ● Plan Ahead:  Arrive on time with required materials and completed work.  ● Behave Respectfully:  Treat teachers, parents, other students, and staff with respect at all

times. Respect the space you are in and keep it clean. ● Challenge Yourself: Strive to do your best work at every class, take initiative to stay ahead of

deadlines, and give 100% energy and focus to class activities.

 “Wizard of Oz”

Musical Covenant  We have read the information letter and Dandylyon Drama policies and are excited to take part in Brookside                                   Elementary’s production of Wizard of Oz, Young Performers’ Edition!

We will do our part at home and in rehearsal to:  ● Plan Ahead:  Arrive on time with required materials and completed work.  ● Behave Respectfully:  Treat teachers, parents, other students, and staff with respect at all times.

Respect the space you are in and keep it clean. ● Challenge Yourself: Strive to do your best work at every class, take initiative to stay ahead of

deadlines, and give 100% energy and focus to class activities. ● Ask Questions: If I am not sure about something, I’ll go to the source and ask my director or my

parent producer. ● Always remembering to: Be Safe! Be Kind! Have Fun!

I understand that being in a Musical is being part of a team and that the whole cast is depending on my participation. If I do not do my part in these areas it can result in my part being cut from the Musical. I understand that disruptive behavior will be responded to with the following steps to ensure that all children enjoy and benefit from enrichment programs.

1. If a child is disruptive in an enrichment class, a phone call will be made to caregivers advising them of the problem and allowing them to address it with the child at home.

2. If a child is disruptive a second time, the child’s caregiver will be required to attend the next class with the child to ensure that the class is able to run smoothly.

3. If a child continues to be disruptive a third time, the child will not be allowed to return to the remainder of classes for that session.

I ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT MANDATORY REHEARSALS & PERFORMANCES ARE MANDATORY AND ARE REQUIRED FOR PARTICIPATION- NO EXCEPTIONS!

SUGGESTED MONOLOGUES FOR

“WIZARD OF OZ, YOUNG PERFORMERS’ EDITION” FOR YOUR AUDITION, PICK A MONOLOGUE THAT WOULD BE FUN FOR YOU!

Your choice of monologue will not determine which part you get and you do not have to do a                                     monologue from the Wizard of Oz. See Dandylyon Drama’s website for additional monologue                         options and tips on how to audition: http://dandylyondrama.org/clubs/monologues/ Please                 have your child memorize their monologue of choice by Audition week.

Lion “Courage”

Courage! What makes a king out of a slave? Courage! What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage! What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist, or the dusky dusk? What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage! What have they got that I ain't got? Courage! You can say that again!

Munchkin Major “Undeniably”

As Mayor of the Munchkin City, in the county of the land of Oz we welcome you most regally, but we have to verify it legally. To see, if she is morally, ethically, spiritually, physically, undeniably and reliably dead. Then this is a day of independence for all the munchkins and their descendants. Let the joyous news be spread. The wicked old witch at last is dead!

Glinda the Good Witch “Which Kind of Witch Are You?”

Are you a good witch or a bad witch? Or is that the witch? Well, I’m a little muddled. The munchkins called me because a new witch has dropped a house on the wicked witch of the east. There’s the house and here you are and that’s all that’s left of the wicked witch of the east. And so, what the munchkins want to know is, are you a good witch or a bad witch?

Scarecrow “Talking Without Brains”

Pardon me, that way is a very nice way. It’s pleasant down that way, too. Am I confusing you on purpose, of course not. You see, I can’t make up my mind because I haven’t got a brain, only straw. How can I talk if I haven’t got a brain? Hmmm, well some people without brains do an awful lot of talking, don’t they?

Dorothy “Yellow Brick Road”

Follow the yellow brick road? Follow the yellow brick road. Okay, here it is, but which now which way do we go? (looking at scarecrow) That’s funny. Wasn’t that scarecrow pointing the other way? (talking to her dog) Don’t be silly, Toto, scarecrows don’t move- hey, you moved! I think you’re trying to tell me which way to go, but- are you doing that on purpose or can’t you make up your mind?

Page 11: Wizard of Oz, Young Performers’ Edition!brooksidepta.org/Doc/Public/Wizard of Oz-Full Packet 3-6th 2.pdf · Wizard of Oz, Young Performers’ Edition! Brookside Elementary’s Spring

Wicked Witch of the West “Jitterbugs” Nikko, Nikko! Where is the commander of my aerobatic apes? There you are. I have an important task for you. My enemies are about to enter the Haunted Forest. I want you to rouse your men and snatch the sickening little girl and her equally nauseating little dog. I'll conjure up a spell to take the fight out of her. Now which of my creepy crawlie creations shall I send to plague her? The flibberty gibbet? No! The fly by night? No! Aha! I have it! The jitterbug! There is no more infectious bug in my book of spells. Once bitten, they can never stop dancing till they drop! And when they do, you shall be there to scoop up the little brat and the little brute and bring them both to me! Now go!

Wizard “Clinking and Clanking” Come forward. I am Oz the great and powerful. Who are you? WHO are YOU? Silence! The great and powerful Oz knows why you’ve come. Tinman, step forward. You dare to come to me for a heart, do you? You clinking, clanking, clattering, collection of collinginous junk.

Munchin Girl “Lollipop Guild” We represent the Lollipop Guild and on behalf of the Lollipop Guild, we’d like to welcome you to Munchkin Land. We thank you very sweetly for doing it so neatly. You’ve killed her so completely that we thank you very sweetly. Let the joyous news be spread! The wicked old witch at last is dead.

Tinman “Oil Can” (talking through a closed mouth) Oil can.Oilllll caaaaaan! My mouth. (jaw loosens a bit) The other side. My, my, my, goodness. I can talk again! Oil my arms, please. Oil my elbows. It feels wonderful. I’ve held that ax up for ages. It was about a year ago that I was chopping that tree and suddenly it began to rain. Right in the middle of a chop I rusted solid.

Dorothy “Miss Gulch” Aunt Em! Aunt Em! Just listen to what Miss Gulch did to Toto. Aunt Em, she hit him and . . . Oh, but Aunt Em, Miss Gulch hit Toto right over the back with a rake just because she says he gets into her garden and chases her nasty old cat. But he doesn’t do it every day, just once or twice a Week and he can’t catch her old cat anyway. Now she says she’s going to call the sheriff!

Top Ten Tips for a Great Audition

10. CHOOSE WISELY! Pick a monologue that you like, and memorize it!

9. NO STUFF NEEDED! Don't use a chair or prop, just use your imagination.

8. DON'T STRESS! The directors do not have your monologue memorized, sowe won't even notice if you mess up a word or two, so try to keep going.

7. ENERGY! First impressions count. Show us your best self, so wake up!

6. EMOTION! Plays and Musicals capture the most dramatic moments of a story,so we want to see some emotion!

5. ENNUNCIATION! This ain't no fashion show, we want to understand thewords please.

4. EXPRESSION! You've got a face so use it to tell the story.

3. BREATHE! You need oxygen to survive your audition.

2. STAND TALL! This helps you look and feel confident and forget your nerves.

1. SMILE! Directors want to work with fun people!
