RESUME

Concurrently with his education at WAAC, William began working at the local Del Ray neighborhood office of partners Robert Larson and Stephen Koenig. Since 1997 Larson Koenig Architect's (LKA) team has been contributing thoughtful, integrative design services to the local community. With the composition of their work being half residential and half commercial/ religious/ government, LKA has satisfied a diverse range of clients in solving their built environment and programmatic needs. Mr. Hendricks began his architecture career here, completed his intern development program and became a licensed professional under their guidance. As he learns and grows into a more mature architect, William is constantly seeking new challenges that will find a balance with his appreciation for art and his pragmatic desire to find elegant solutions to problems. Originally from West Virginia, he has lived in Del Ray for the past 10 years with his wife, and newborn son. In his spare time William enjoys traveling abroad with his family, rowing on the Potomac, and taking his fly fishing rod for walks along area creeks.

Moving to the Washington D.C. area in 2000 after completing art school at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) with a degree in painting, William Hendricks absorbed the many cultural offerings of the nation's capital. While working with some of the city's best known museum institutions, William began to track onto a different path that utilized his innate analytical abilities. He began taking courses in architecture at the Washington Alexandria Architecture Center (WAAC) a part of the Virginia Tech's College of Architecture and Urban Studies Program, eventually completing a Master of Archictecture degree.

After a successful renovation of their first restaurant kitchen, the partners of Taqueria el Poblano invited Larson Koenig Architects to design their third establishment in the new Penn Rose Square mixed use development on Columbia Pike in Arlington, VA. Mr. Hendricks professionally managed many aspects of this project such as rendering views that convinced the clients of the virtues of the plan and coordinated construction documents among the kitchen, lighting, and MEP consultants.

As the contractor and subs were already known for this project, a working relationship allowed for early accurate assessments of cost. Mr. Hendricks skillfully negotiated a deal to have the building owner provide extra square footage and the HVAC system for the project, because of inadequate ceiling height in the client's kitchen. He also maintained an early feedback loop with the county that expedited the building code and health departments approval.

After a wood shop was successfully designed by LKA and constructed on the site, the owners of this Mount Vernon Avenue lot in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria looked to their other corner to seek possible development opportunities. The firm proposed a mixed use building with store frontage on the ground level, rentable office and condo spaces on the 2nd and 3rd levels respectively. Mr. Hendricks created and rendered the these model images that kept the project progressing forward.

Mr. Hendricks created and rendered the these model images that kept the project progressing forward. Anticipating controversy over infilling this open space, a careful regulatory and zoning analysis was performed and a strategy was developed to introduce the project to key land use committee members of the civic association. The project is on hold while the owner seeks possible partner investors.

The Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority commissioned LKA to add an open air pavilion to the existing facility complex at the Brambleton Golf Course. The project was completed on time and under budget, and after some years of profitable use as a wedding banquet area, the Board asked LKA to come up with an enclosure scheme to allow for year round operation. Such a design was provided and detailed to 100% CD's. The continuation of project is awaiting financing.

The Alexandria Kingdom Hall was designed to be an expansion of an existing facility for this Jehovah's Witness Congregation. Larson Koenig Architects accommodated the unique cultural requests of this client by making a plan that could preserve some elements of the original building (although it was ultimately demolished), creating a design that could be built entirely by the congregants, and be approved by the religion's regional corporate office.

Mr. Hendricks' contribution to the team was in the technical plan phase; drawing mechanical and structural details, and designing accessibility compliant features throughout the building. The low slung building's wooden roof trusses are placed on prefabricated steel and polystyrene paneled walls that bear on grade beams with helical piers. The firm also participated in a community outreach meeting to mediate some of the more controversial aspects of the project.

A memorial garden, 4 accessibility parking spaces, a bypass circulation route, improvements to the fellowship hall and kitchen were all apart of the program for the Beverley Hills Church. However, due to lack of funding, accomplishing everything at once was not feasible, so Larson Koenig Architects developed a phased approach that the church has successfully implemented over the past several years.

Mr. Hendricks was instrumental in the latest phase of construction at the church that advances an accessible route and reorders the circulation so that the classroom spaces can be used without interruption. Careful attention was given to the reduction of the courtyard as it has been used as a repository for cremated remains. A fourth phase will create a memorial garden in the courtyard to signify that use.

TARP funds allowed Alexandria's General Services Administration to enhance the secure entry area and a courtroom of this courthouse. Charged with providing a specified level of ballistic rating to the sheriff's deputy who manned the x-ray machine that would not detract from the building's historic character, Mr. Hendricks lead the design team through most phases of the project. Some enhancements are concealed and are too sensitive to illustrate here.

Comments from the city GSA, Sheriff's Department, Alexandria Commission for Person with Disabilities, and ultimately the Judge, were considered in executing this design. Mr. Hendricks performed the Bidding, Addenda, Award and Contract Administration duties at this sensitive site which required after hours installation. Reviewing submittals and creating a punch list required careful scrutiny with a new contractor to the city.

Larson Koenig Architects worked with the Dept. of Mental Health and Human Services to bring several agencies together into one office space within this Mark Center Building. The Center provides space for the city's child protective services, social workers, psychologists and community classrooms. The firm completed schematic design with the pertinent decision makers, created drawings sets for cost estimating, and provided pro-bono illustrations for fund raising.

The CD's were completed by a different firm and the project was finished in 2007. Subsequent to post occupancy, a new phase rearranging underutilized spaces has begun with Mr. Hendricks leading the team. A brief schematic session brought some critical functions into alignment, and with the scope being smaller Mr. Hendricks has taken on the duties of all mechanical, lighting, and code compliance issues in a new construction document package.

Several problems where solved in this scheme for the Alexandria Police Department who share their firing range with other nearby jurisdictions. First, a storm water run-off filtration system is installed to mitigate the lead contamination from the discharged bullets. Second, clear-spanning steel roof elements replace the current wooden columned baffles that are compromised by accumulated shot. Third, the new roof elements are lined with acoustic treatment to provide sound attenuation for a

Mr. Hendricks worked on all of the concept drawings, satisfying the client's needs for the facility. While the lead mediation and some additional storage has been constructed, the complete project is currently on hold while the department redirects funds to the new police headquarters.

The early 20th century solid masonry Fire Station had served many purposes in its lifetime including the town hall of Potomac, VA prior to its annexation into the city of Alexandria. Larson Koenig was given responsibility in 2004 for caring for the historic structure, while improving the building envelope and systems and bringing the 2nd floor barracks up to date with co-ed requirements of the Fire Department.

However, in 2006 at 100% CD's the city decided to build a new fire station, necessitating a reprogramming for 202. Mr. Hendricks came onto the team at this difficult period and helped successfully transform the 2nd floor into a flexible training assembly space for the Hazmat Special Unit and Emergency Medical Unit. He also reviewed numerous change orders and provided sketched solutions to the concealed conditions inherent in such a renovation.

OVERVIEW: Alexandria's Department of Housing, Home Rehabilitation Loan Program is an open-ended contract for Larson Koenig Architects. It is a $90K 99year interest free loan for qualifying income families to make repairs or improvements to their homes. The firm performs all traditional architectural phases, including CA, for the city selected clients and provides services for regulatory applications and hearings if necessary.

DUBOSE RESIDENCE: The design for this single family home began with a modest addition to the kitchen, reconfiguration of the upstairs bedrooms and lead paint abatement. During the Construction Administration phase extensive structural deficiencies to the entire building were revealed and were carefully detailed and corrected through to the completion of the project by Mr. Hendricks

LEWIS RESIDENCE: The clients for this project are an elderly couple, one of whom has a recent mobility impairment. The scope of the project adds to a 1 1/2 story house with a single story accessible master bedroom and master bath addition at the rear of the house as well as a new side entrance equipped with a vertical lift.

This project consists of a three-story, six-unit condominium complex in a rapidly developing neighborhood in Washington DC. The developers, were interested in a design that was in character with the surrounding neighborhood and in scale with the urban fabric. Two entrance courtyards are created in the front and rear of the building separated by a central stairway. Off street parking is provided. Mr. Hendricks helped design the floor plan layouts and the marketing material that sold all of the units.

This couple desired a comfortable home characterized by carefully integrated interior and exterior spaces. Natural light is brought deep into all rooms through clerestory windows and bright white sloped ceilings. Generous openings and lines of sight are available to the front and rear, while minimal side apertures maintain neighbors' privacy. Guests are accommodated in suites on the main level while the master suite is secluded on the level above.

Mr. Hendricks arrived on the team while this single family home was being constructed. He was heavily involved in the detailing of the fireplace, dining room casework, and master bedroom balcony keeping the project in tune with its contemporary spirit.

Project Akilah: The Rwandan government has provided an existing school facility outside of Kigali, that will be renovated for the new Akilah campus, a vocational school for women. There are currently 12 buildings on the site. Mr. Hendricks participated in meetings throughout 2008 to develop a master plan for the campus, programming for the existing buildings, and a list of renovation/ infrastructure needs in order for the campus to become habitable. A September 2012 opening is anticipated.

OVERVIEW: Architecture for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that seeks architectural solutions to communities in need. Mr. Hendricks as a leader in the DC chapter, provides innovative, sustainable, and collaborative design where resources and expertise are scarce. The AfH-DC team develops long term master plan, building schematics, produces design development drawings, and provides marketing materials throughout the design process

A New Dawn Ayiti: A new clinic in Marmount, Haiti was destroyed by the 2010 earthquake. In April of 2011 a weekend charrette at GWU Interior Design School produced a solution on the same site that would focus on prenatal healthcare for women and of this rural area. Ideas such as security, community assembly, off grid sustainability, and earthquake resistant structures we implemented into the final design. Mr. Hendricks provided the 3d modeling along with design advice.

Project Greenway is a new type of convenience store and vehicular energy station. The impetus for this new building type was derived from the disconnect between the current gas station design and the more forward evolving automotive industry i.e. hybrid, fuel cell, electric, ethanol, and solar technologies. The emphasis of the design competition concept was one of sustainability; whereby the building would reflect in its existence the philosophy of its environmentally friendly cars and customers.

Mr. Hendricks transformed his thesis site and project into a winning finalist of this regional competition. The roof lines developed specifically for solar energy collection fulfilled a mandatory energy production piece of the program. The earth removed became a terrace for a green park and garden. The large space serves as a market and the smaller bays service the vehicles, while a covered bus stop is positioned at the southside of the structure.

THESIS OVERVIEW: The approach to the thesis was twofold. Firstly an investigation into the design process by way of a stop motion movie was conducted in order to find the influences that bring forth architecture from various methods of play and interaction with materials. Following this experiment a Montessori school was designed to harness energy from the sun. It was documented through the more traditional methods of drawing and modeling.
