Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos,

A Time to Give Thanks!

November has started and we’ll be turning the clocks back and the days are

getting shorter and shorter. We are enjoying the last few days of an Indian

summer and getting ready for the holidays to come and the cold winter

weather.

Thanksgiving is one of the warmest and most enjoyable holidays of the

year. We are afforded the opportunity to express our gratitude for the

blessings we have been given. We embrace family and friends and share a

meal or a phone conversation. We are thankful for our personal successes,

never forgetting our rich traditions.

As Lions we need to keep our rich tradition of providing SERVICE to those

in need. We are coming to that time of year when everyone gets caught up

with the holidays. We sometimes forget that there are people in our

communities that will not enjoy their holidays for a lot of reasons. Lions

can provide that little bit of happiness to those people. We as Lions work

together for others, we achieve together for others, and we can help others

celebrate at this Thanksgiving season so that they too can be thankful for

what the Lions do “SERVE”.

May Your Family have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Yours in Lionism,

DG Rich

GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE... PDG Geoff Temple

Fellow Lions, Lionesses, and Leos of District 14B,

One of the reoccurring themes that we constantly hear in Lions Clubs is that it

is almost impossible to get new members or nobody wants to join service

organizations anymore. Although it is probably true that service organizations

and the like do not hold the mass appeal that they once did, new members are

in fact joining Lions Clubs. I can think of a least four members that I inducted

into district clubs in the last month or so. It is my strong hope that these new

Lions remain active and remain Lions for many years. Therefore, my topic this

month is that retention of new members matters.

If we are fortunate enough to get someone to join the Lions, we need to do our

best to have a new member continue to be a Lion and become a contributing

member. The first person that is responsible for this task is the new member’s

sponsor. Perhaps the new member knows some of the other members through

church or other community organizations, but chances are the sponsor is the

only Lion the new member knows. Therefore, the sponsor needs to take on the

role of the lead mentor. However, it is every member’s job to see that the new

member feels welcome. Everyone needs to try to talk to the new member and

get to know them as a person. If you are sitting next to a new member and you

think something needs to be explained, quietly do so. No one likes to feel like

a fish out of water or the odd man (or woman) out.

I realize that this sounds like basic common sense, but over the years I have had

the pleasure of meeting dozens of new members in many clubs. I would then

make a return visit to the club only to find out that the new Lion that I had met

previously was not attending meetings or participating in projects. It could be

that these new members just came to the conclusion that the Lions was not for

them, but maybe these people did not feel included in club activities.

Therefore, if your club is fortunate enough to get a new member then it is the

entire club’s responsibility to make this person feel like they are an important

part of the greatest service organization in the world. Everyone will benefit.

“The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention.”

Oscar Wilde

SECOND VICE DISTRICT

GOVERNOR’S MESSAGE... Lion Kirby Marchand

Fellow Lions, Lionesses and Leos,

This month I’d like to begin by quoting a famous historic figure – Sitting Bull. This

Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux holy man served as a leader of his people in the 19th century. He

was admired for his integrity, moral fiber, strength of character, and wisdom. He was not

esteemed for his great wealth – he did not have great wealth. He is remembered for many

astute comments that we should consider and keep in mind in the 21st century. One that I

like is “Inside of me there are two dogs. One is mean and evil and the other is good, and

they fight each other all the time. When asked which one wins, I answer, ‘the one I feed

the most.”

During the past six weeks, I have been feeding my “good dog.” On September 22, I was

part of a contingent of Lions dignitaries from all over the state who gathered at the

Pittsburgh Blind & Vision Rehabilitation Services facility to welcome Lions International

President Counselor Bob Corlew to Pittsburgh during his only Pennsylvania stop of a

whirlwind bus tour. During his 1-1/2 hour stop, International President Bob, along with

everyone else, toured the new state-of-the-art facility. After the tour, there was a quick

meet and greet/Q&A session. Then IP Bob was off to Morgantown, WV.

Maybe have your club make a visit to the Center to see what it’s all about! See some of

the state-of-the-art innovations incorporated in this new home for the Rehab Center.

On September 29th, I attended a great Fall Rally with Passing of the Banner Ceremony.

The food was wonderful, and Past International Director Cindy Gregg gave an interesting

and inspiring speech, and gave out many awards to deserving Lions.

When was the last time you attended a District function?

During October, I attended two meetings of my home club, the White Oak Lions. I helped

to deliver Koeze Nuts sold by the White Oak Lions to a local union hall, and volunteered

at a Food Pantry supported by the White Oak Lions. On October 11th, I attended the 50th

Anniversary Glassport Lions Rigatoni Night, which was probably better attended than any

in the past few years. 1st VDG Geoff Temple and PID Cindy Gregg both had nice things

to say, and a State Proclamation was delivered by the local State Representative about this

momentous occasion.

Don’t be afraid to pitch in and help… and more importantly, get out and visit other

clubs, attend their functions and see firsthand what they are doing in their communities!

The weekend of October 28 through 30, I will be attending the PA Lions State Council

Meeting in Grantville, PA. This will be my first State Council Meeting and should be very

interesting. Then, November 5th will be the District 14-B Cabinet meeting, and on

November 7th will be a Region 2 Joint Zone Meeting.

Do you have any clue how the State and District operates? Why not see how both play

an important part in what we do and how we are governed? Attend a Cabinet meeting!

Yes, I really think that I’ve been feeding my “good dog.” Have you been feeding yours?

The pancake breakfast held at the Trinity Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday, October 15th was successful. There were

5 current students from the Pitt Campus Club and 1 recently graduated student that came out to help with the

breakfast. There were a few Lions' members that came and I would like to acknowledge them. Lion Bernice Goodall and

her husband, Lion Richard Goodall, (Hilltop Lions Club) showed their support for our efforts to raise money for the church's

stair lift. I want to thank everyone who donated money or gift cards for the purchase of the products we needed to buy for

the breakfast. I also want to thank Lion Bob Conrad and his wife Donna (Bloomfield-Lawrenceville Lions' Club) for all

the hard work and support they gave to this project. A special thanks to all the members of the Trinity church who cooked

and help us by letting us use their church hall for the event. We all worked hard and will continue to have fund raisers to

help obtain the money we need for the stair lift.

Congratulations to Lion Dr. Glenn Ride who is celebrating his 69th year as a Lion. Lion Glenn is 96 years

old and is living at Longwood at Oakmont. He has an apartment there, but unfortunately he fell a couple

of months ago, which led to a hospitalization and now he is in the acute care section of Longwood. He is

hoping to improve enough to go to their assisted living program. His mind is sharp.

He grew up in Renton, which is a coal mining area. His dad ran the company store and his whole family

pitched in. His dad provided assistance to miners during the depression. When he was 16, they moved to

Oakmont and he had dental work done by a local dentist. This dentist took him under his wing and inspired

him to become a dentist. That dentist took him down to Pitt dental school when he was still in high school and they gave him an academic

program to follow, which he did.

He was at Pitt in dental school when the bombing of Pearl Harbor occurred. At that point they accelerated the dental training, doing

classes 10 hours a day. When he graduated early, he went into the Navy where he spent four years from 1943-47. He was assigned

stateside for a while, but then was in training to go to Japan for the battle there. After Hiroshima, he was on a ship in Japan doing dental

work and that was his last assignment. He never saw his parents the entire time he spent in the service.

After leaving the Navy, he returned to Oakmont and opened a dental practice from 1947-86. His practice was bought out by Terry

Griffin, DMD, who still practices here. He joined the Oakmont Lions in 1947. He served as our president and he participated in many

of the Lions Shows. He recalls our club helping injured people with beds and providing eye care for the needy. He developed close

friendships with his fellow Lions that extend to this day. He is a long-time member of Oakmont Presbyterian church. He has two

daughters, who live in Oakmont. His wife of 65 years, Barbara, passed away three years ago. A special thanks to Lion Matt Weimer for

The Robinson Township Lions (District

raising approximately $500 for leader dog

for the blind programs. The Club matched

their donation, giving $1,000 to guide

With the help of generous people in our community, the KDKA-TV

Turkey Fund has provided Thanksgiving dinners for our neighbors in

need for the past 34 years! The tradition continues this year.

The KDKA-TV Turkey Fund has provided holiday meals to more than

a million families. Just $15 can give a struggling family the means to

gather and share a meal with loved ones.

PNC will continue to support the KDKA-TV Turkey Fund through

collection in all PNC branches. Any donation of $50 or more made in

the branch will be matched by PNC up to $50,000. All the money raised

will be distributed throughout the KDKA-TV viewing area — including

Allegheny and 11 surrounding counties — through the Greater

Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The Food Bank relies on its partners

and community to help carry out its mission. In tough times, even

people with little to share show their concern about hunger with food

drives, volunteer hours, and financial gifts.

If your club would like to make a donation, please do so at your nearest PNC Bank to get the matching funds of

$50.00 or more.

Keep in mind that this donation would qualify your club to enter it as a Centennial Service Challenge for

“Relieving the Hunger”. You must indicate this donation on your monthly service activities report to get

the proper credit. Please let us know at the Cauldron if indeed you made a donation.

Requests for food should be referred to the Hunger Services Network – 412 681-1121.

A special thanks to PDG John Case for bringing this to our attention! Lion John initiated this project to get the Lions

clubs involved when he was District Governor in 2013-2014.

The Bridgeville Greater Area Lions is pleased to announce that we have received approval from LCI for our charter

application. We will be scheduling our Charter night for early December, 2016 and will send out an announcement with the

actual date and location after our meeting on November 1st.

We currently have 23 members and a slate of officers. We have started our first fund raising event selling ENJOY books.

We look forward to having a fun and event filled charter night and the opportunity to introduce our members to many of

our fellow Lions in the Pittsburgh area.

The following two pages are the Lions members who were reported last year as being veterans.

To those whose names do not appear, we offer our apologies, and to those who are no longer

with us, we offer our deepest sympathy and gratitude for their service.

Veterans Day is an official United States public holiday, observed annually on

November 11, that honors military veterans, that is, persons who served in the

United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including

Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries that

mark the anniversary of the end of World War I; major hostilities of World War I

were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918,

when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States

previously observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans

Day in 1954.

An open letter to the Lions Clubs in District 14B…

At the June cabinet meeting the District adopted a district project for 2016-17. We will be asking all the clubs to donate to the

district for “Operation Safety Net”. You may have heard of it on local news casts. Operation Safety Net is a street medicine

organization that serves the homeless population by providing medical care and housing assistance. Founded by Dr. Jim

Withers in 1992, OSN has taken care of over 10,000 men and women in Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas. Walking teams of

clinicians and formerly homeless workers provide care in the streets under the direction of Dr. Withers, an emergency room

physician from Pittsburgh Mercy Health System and Trinity Health, sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy. In 2015, Dr. Withers

was named one of the CNN Heroes of the Year.

If you would like more information about Operation Safety Net, please go to the following website:

https://www.pittsburghmercy.org/operation-safety-net/

District 14B would like to request a donation from your club to Operation Safety Net through the District. The District will be

applying for a matching grant from the Lions of Pennsylvania Foundation. We are asking for a donation of $100.00 or more

from each Lions Club in the District.

NOVEMBER IS DIABETES AWARENESS

MONTH

Diabetes is increasing worldwide. The number of people

living with diabetes is more than 422 million and is

expected to affect over 642 million by 2040. (World Health

Organization). Lions conduct and support local and large-

scale efforts leading to the control and treatment of

diabetes and its complications through education,

prevention and research.

Here are resources and project ideas that can help you

make a difference in your community:

Strides: Lions for Diabetes Awareness

Strides events include walking, dancing, cycling and

running. They promote diabetes awareness and healthy

exercise for people with diabetes or for those at risk for the

disease.

Diabetes Screenings

The purpose of diabetes screening is to identify

asymptomatic individuals who may have diabetes and not

know it, and to refer them to qualified health care

professionals for additional assessment.

Diabetes Partnerships and Organizations

Expand your community reach. Work with local diabetes

organizations and Lions diabetes partners to:

Provide community awareness and education

programs

Conduct diabetes screenings

Improve greater access to health care, community

support and diabetes management for those in need

Diabetes Resources

Download diabetes brochures, flyers, handouts and other

publications to help raise awareness in your community.

Diabetes Chairperson

Organize diabetes service projects and activities in your area by becoming a diabetes chairperson in your club, district or multiple district.

LCIF Core 4 Diabetes Funding This program awards multi-year grants for large-scale Lions efforts to support the expansion and enhancement of diabetes education, prevention and treatment programs.

HISTORY OF THE LIONS BAND

The Lions All State Band will be preparing for their trip to perform in the Centennial Celebration Convention in Chicago in July

2017. The Pennsylvania Lions All-State Band was founded in 1982 to give high school musicians an opportunity to accompany

Pennsylvania Lions members to various Lions Club International and State conventions. Since its inception, over 3,000 high

school students have participated in Lions Club events in the past and across the world. The Pennsylvania Lions All State Band

provides high school musicians the opportunity to rehearse and perform a wide variety of music in both state-level

performances and international tours.

Lions Dr. Robert Zellner and Past District Governor George Yearick founded and directed the band at its inception and

continued for several years with rehearsals at Gettysburg College. Several other band directors have directed the band over the

years. Dr Zellener returned to the directorship and remained there for a few years until he retired in 2012. Upon his retirement,

Dr. Russell McCutcheon – Director of Bands at the Sunderman Conservatory at Gettysburg College – assumed the duties as

Lions Band Music Director.

Each year, the Lions Band staff (which consists of current and former music educators and professional musicians) comes

together to provide students with a one-of-a-kind experience. Musically, high school students are exposed to collegiate level

instruction and literature. Socially, life-long friendships are forged during this unique journey. The mixture of challenging

rehearsals and travel creates a memorable experience for all students.

The Band travels to a selected Pennsylvania city each May to play during the Lions State Convention. When the Lions Club

International Convention is held in the United States, the Lions of Pennsylvania sponsor a ten-day performance tour for the

band. Tours usually begin during late June or early July and include a three-day mini-camp at Gettysburg College. The band is

sponsored by the Lions Clubs of Pennsylvania and students participate at little to no cost thanks to their generosity.

Watch each issue of the Cauldron for additional

information that will be forthcoming regarding

participation in the All State Band’s performance at

the 2017 International Convention in Chicago.

DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

Certainly, there is at least one person in every club who is

deserving of receiving this award! Think of all those members who

haven’t been too active recently and reflect on what they did when

they were the “shining star” or backbone of your club. Here’s the

ideal way to say thank you to them for the service to their

community!
