Farm Tour Guide 2017 | 3

This year’s tour takes visitors through the northeast quadrant of our picturesque county which includes Baughman, Chippewa, Green, and Milton townships. The 2017 tour offers a plentiful and wide variety of tour stops! The tour begins with a look back at yesteryear at the Smithville Historical Society then meanders to the Orrville area and heads north while making stops in Marshallville, Doylestown, and ending in Rittman. We are excited to offer a tour that highlights family-owned livestock operations as well as ag-related businesses. With delicious food and activities at each stop, it should appeal to attendees of all ages!

The scenery in these townships is beautiful this time of year. The gently rolling hills provide a picturesque landscape. Just driving these roads is relaxing and restful. Please remain alert, however, as hillcrests and curves can block your vision of very slow vehicles such as horse-drawn buggies, bicyclists, and farm equipment. We want your day to be one of nothing but pleasant memories.

If you are one of our returning visitors – Welcome back! If this is your first visit to our annual tour – Enjoy! (We know you’ll come back.)

Sincerely,

Bob HangeWayne County Farm Bureau President

Farm Tour Guide 2017 | 5

The Smithville Community Historical Society was founded in 1990 for “Keeping that past alive for the future.” Our “Pioneer Village,” located in the center of the village depicts how the families of the mid 1800’s lived. The twelve structures have all been moved to this location from Smithville or Green Township except for two which were brought in from other areas of Wayne County.

The Mishler Weaving Mill is located at 381 E. Main Street. Our volunteers will be weaving various items, dish cloths, dish towels and rugs at the Mill. Behind the Mishler Weaving Mill is the Smithville Veterans Memorial. You may also pick up information regarding our three historic cemeteries at the Memorial.

Of the twelve buildings at the “Pioneer Village,” nine will be open and staffed by craftsmen and volunteers to tell that building’s story and answer questions. We will have Blacksmiths in the Blacksmith Shop, Potters in the Carriage Barn, Tinsmith in the Tin Shop and the Wheelwright in the Wheelwright

Shop. Not to be missed is the Lydo Barn which was built in the 1840’s and moved to the museum in 2006. It contains much of the equipment used in the growing and harvesting of potatoes. Equipment used for harvesting ice from the area ponds to supply to the railroads in the late 1800’s is likely the most complete collection. The collection also shows a number of pieces of equipment powered by Hit-and-Miss engines. Also the story of a Smithville Brewery and its distillery are on display. There are many more farm related items to view in the barn, it is a true farm antique lover’s domain. Homemade Ice Cream will be available from Mike Gasser at the “Pioneer Village”.

Various parking areas throughout the village will be available, so drive slowly to not miss a thing.

Come and enjoy the 2017 Wayne County Farm Tour.

The rehms’ are a third generation farming family located in Orrville, Ohio. Ben and Mel, along with their children, Kendra (2) and Cody (1) and Ben’s parents, Phil and Judy Rehm, own and operate Rehm Farms LLC. Corn, soybeans, wheat and hay are produced on the farm and their custom farming business for landowners in and out of the county has been rapidly growing in the recent years. In addition to the grain, Rehm Farms is a contract grower for Case Farms where they manage broiler chickens. This

spring, a third barn measuring 60’ x 652’ was built bringing the total number of birds managed to over 110,000 per flock. Ben, a graduate of Ohio State ATI, has a deep passion for farming and in a daily effort to keep this farm running for a fourth generation, drives to keep the equipment and management decisions as up to date and advanced as possible. Both he and Phil have made it a priority to not only harvest crops from the land, but to preserve and care for the land itself.

When Ben Rehm asked Jeff Kauffman to marry his daughter, one of the stipulations was that Ben would take the goats too. And so Bar M Farm was started. Ben and Mel raise Boer cross goats for the show wether industry. With room for only 50-60 goats during the winter, quality and quantity has been the driving force. Nutrition, health and reproductive management are considered three of the most important things the Rehms focus on to maintain a healthy and desirable herd. Bar M Farm has also become a dealer for Show Rite and Hubbard Feeds. “It is important to us to make sure a feed we have found to work really well, especially with our genetic base, was easily available in our area.” While Bar M Farm focuses mainly on goat nutrition, feed for any species can be ordered.

At this stop you will be able to see the farm shop and examine the equipment used in both the grain and broiler chicken side of the farm. Due to biosecurity, visitors will not be able to enter the chicken barns, but a wagon ride will be provided to tour the barns from the outside. Mel loves talking about goats and is excited to share the “goat part” of the stop with all. The barn will be open and a group of interactive educational activities is being prepared.

The Fire Safety Trailer will be set up on site and farm safety demonstrations will be provided by Wayne County Regional Training Facility in partnership with Central Fire District.

Case Farms chicken will be cooked by members of the Smithville Firemens’ Benefit Association, and all proceeds will go directly to the association to be used to support rescue activities of Central Fire District. Dinners and halves of chicken will be available until sold out.

The Shoup family has been farming in Wayne/Holmes County for over 180 years. Shoup Bros. Farm started in the 1950s between brothers Bill and Bob Shoup who began farrowing sows on straw at the farm on Paradise Road, southwest of Orrville. Since then, the farm has grown to include 5 more owners: Bob’s son Ed and Bill’s sons Dave, Dean, Doug, and Don. In the next generation, Ed’s daughter Leslie and son Lyle are partners as well. Many of the sons, daughters, and cousins help when they can.

The business consists of a 3500 sow farrow-to-finish swine operation which is supplemented by growing 3000 acres of corn and soybeans. Shoup Bros. Farm has locations around Wayne and Ashland counties but most centralized in the Orrville area. The farm tour stop will be located at Dean and Susan Shoup’s farm on the south side of Orrville. Visitors will see sows, piglets, and hogs in limited numbers as well as learn about swine production. There will also be harvesting demonstrations, crop permitting, and a tour around the grain drying facility at the farm. The Northeast Ohio Pork Producers will offer pork loin sandwiches and steak sandwiches. Parking is limited at this location so please plan accordingly.

The doctors and staff of the Orrville Veterinary Clinic and the Orrville Pet Spa & Resort are delighted to be a part of the 2017 Wayne County Farm Tour. The Orrville Veterinary Clinic, opened in 1956, is currently a ten doctor practice serving both farm and companion animals. Our large animal veterinarians continue to travel to farms in eastern Wayne and surrounding counties to deliver high-quality care for primarily dairy cows and horses. This allows us to stay closely connected to the agricultural sector in Wayne County, and to represent the farming community through animal health.

As an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accredited practice, our knowledgeable and caring hospital

team strives to assist all animals in living longer, more productive lives as well as provide owners with exceptional service and the most recent medical information. To this effort, the clinic was remodeled in 2016 to include separate examination and treatment areas for cats and dogs, a dental suite, and a new out-patient treatment area and laboratory. We are also proud to now offer acupuncture and laser therapy for all animals as an additional method of treatment for certain conditions. Satellite clinics in the Seville and Barberton communities were added in 2007 to assist more patients in the area.

In 2004, the Orrville Veterinary Clinic recognized a local need for a premier lodging and styling facility and added the Orrville Pet Spa & Resort adjacent to the veterinary clinic. The Pet Spa offers a range of exclusive and basic boarding accommodations for up to 100 canine and feline guests. The professional and attentive staff understands the special needs and affection pets require while away from home. The Doggy Daycare Center was added in 2015 to accommodate the growth of our popular doggy daycare program and also provide a space for our exciting new activity, K9 Fit Club, which allows owners and their dogs to exercise together in a non-competitive, dog-friendly environment.

We would love to have you visit us during the 2017 Wayne County Farm Tour and look forward to helping you learn more about how we provide current, comprehensive, and compassionate health care to animals throughout Wayne County.

From hand-hewn timbers to robotic milkers, come and see the technology of robotic milking at work in a historic setting! Baer Family Farm has been in the family since 1818 when Michael Baer came on horseback from PA to purchase land. Now Michael Baer’s descendants (7th – 9th generation) till the soil. Currently, the farm is operated by Elmer and Carolyn, Jeff and Angie Baer, and their families along with encouragement from Great-Grandma Gertrude Baer.

Baer Family Farm is composed of a dairy operation and 380 acres of corn, soybeans, alfalfa, wheat, and barley. This farm

tour stop will feature both historic and modern elements. A bank barn sits on site that was built from hand-hewn native timber in the early 1840s.

The dairy features a robotic milking system which was installed in 2014 and milks the operation’s 120 dairy cows.

Farm tour participants will have the opportunity to view farm machinery, pet baby calves, and tour selected parts of the dairy.

Food available at this stop includes Elmer’s wood oven pizza, Baer Family apple fritters, and milkshakes provided by the Dairy Promoters.

rittman Orchards and Farm market is located in the rolling hills near Doylestown. Rittman Orchards is one of the area’s oldest fruit farms, functioning since 1922. In 2004, the Vodraska family purchased the property and set about completely replanting the orchards and constructing a new farm market building. It is now a showpiece of diversified fruit farming spread across 125 acres dedicated to over 70 varieties of apples, more than 20 varieties of peaches, nectarines and other stone fruit, and various kinds of berries, pumpkins and many other types of produce. If it can be grown in Ohio, it is most likely grown here! The farm market carries all home-grown and hand-picked seasonal fruits and vegetables along with a variety of other products including jams, jellies and gift items with a focus on Ohio companies. Through the year, special festivals are held to celebrate harvest times.

The newest addition to the property is Bent Ladder Cider and Wine. The stunning rustic tasting room features reclaimed barn wood, a friendly and knowledgeable staff and a two-story atrium that overlooks the valley and hills of Wayne County farmland. Appetizer boards are offered alongside hard ciders and wines grown and produced on site. Friday and Saturday nights during summer and fall are a wonderful time for adults to visit the winery and enjoy food trucks, live music and our delicious beverages.

During the farm tour, you can expect a variety of activities planned especially for this important event. We will have an origami master, pumpkin crafts, Irish music, balloon animals, and a team of expert fruit and vegetable carvers. Come out and join us at Rittman Orchards and Farm Market. We would love to have you!

Bauman Orchards is a family-owned business in Rittman that was started in 1929 and has involved 4 generations. Marion and Delores Bauman are now semi-retired and the orchard is run full-time by sons Doug and Bill Bauman along with their wives Dianna and Monica. Everyone has a role in the operation: Doug is in charge of packing and shipping, Bill is the grower, Dianna runs the retail farm market which is open all year, and Monica runs the Corner Market which is open from June through October. The next generation is also involved with the orchard. Bill’s three sons- Brandon, Brett, and Bryce all assist at the orchard. Brandon is in charge of the Scenic Ridge
