Event Write-up

We are very happy to tell you that Works of Heart had its first-ever seminar on Social Design last

Saturday entitled Take Heart. :) As promised, Tata Yap, Jenica Dizon and Sheena Gonzales talked

about how they use art and design to promote the things they love and the things they are

passionate for… and they all did a wonderful job in doing so!

To start off, one of Works of Heart’s

designers Roxy Navarro opened the seminar

by introducing Social Design. She was talking

about courage and sharing to us her five

wildest dreams. Curious? Well, I can tell you

that Works of Heart is playing a big role in

making some of them happen. ;)

Recently married Sheena Sy-Gonzales

shares to us about how her own product

line - Sheena Loves Sunsets - came to be. It

all started with her interest in drawing… and

then she discovered Photoshop. “It’s the one

thing I’m good at.” she says later on, and then

she smiles and proceeds to tell us about her

college life in the Ateneo. She graduated

with a degree in Management which is why

she was able to start her own business with

her drawings. Apart from that, she

proclaims God’s message to others through

her illustrations that are inspired by bible

verses. She happily gave samples of

bookmarks which had them to some of the

people in the audience.

Tata Yap takes us through a journey from her college days (thesis days) to her current life. She

emphasizes how important design can be and how we actually experience this in everyday life. She

shared to us how design can work, even in MRT tickets and sign posts. This just proves that we are

unconsciously experiencing it in our everyday lives. She also said ‘Anyone can be a designer.” Yep,

you read that right. Everyone has the potential to solve a problem through some form of design.

Tata expounded this idea throughout her talk. (with the aid of her very pretty presentation :>)

Jenica Dizon, president of the Ateneo Environmental Science Society, made us think that we were in

an interesting science lecture before she talked about the role of design in her cause but it’s not like

we’re complaining! :) She shared a lot of Did You Know’s about our environment, and you can see that

the audience was hanging onto her every word. She applied the things she learned as an

Information Design major in spreading awareness about the things you ought to know about marine

life. She also inspires aspiring designers that with enough effort, you will work your way into

becoming a better designer. There will a phase where you will feel that your designs are not yet

good enough, but she assures us that you’ll get there soon. :)

We also gave our speakers these adorable charms sponsored by Claybots as a token of our

appreciation. So that’s a wrap! We’d like to thank all the speakers, the team, and the participants

who gave their time to us on a weekend.

Significant Learning

Social design takes a lot of courage. Courage to

step up and step out of the ordinary and act

upon your beliefs. Also, I was really inspired by

the speakers, cause they were young and very

proud of their art. But more than that, they value

their voices, voice as part of the young

generation, voices as good Filipinos, voices as

artist and how they take take their stand in what

they claim.

The most significant learning in this seminar is

the value of art. Art is everywhere and by making

art you should also do it by your heart.

Tata Yap's tips on social design: it doesn't have

to be a campaign, it doesn't have to be labeled

as "social," and it is simple and doesn't point to

itself.

It's good to have something that you're

passionate about and don't be shy to pursue it

even if the dream is wild.

Ratings

I learned that social design can be your one true

love :>

Follow your heart. You can do almost anything

with it. If you want to inspire, then inspire. Never

give up your dreams :>

Would’ve been more successful if…

I really enjoyed the seminar, I just wish the event

was attended by more people. (more young

people) The speakers were definitely inspiring

having this courage and fire in them. They really

have a lot of passion in their heART.

I would suggest that they must give hand-outs so

that listeners will have an idea when they make

their own artworks in life.

Clearer directions to venue

Rotating pool of speakers

Don't start so late

Started and ended on time, better projector

Projector? :)

It would be nice to have hand outs c:=

Expectations for the next seminar

I'd like to see more artworks, more speakers,

more promotion, I guess (for the seminar).

Tips when it comes to designing :>

More hands on designing

Sites to visit/follow to get design-inspiration

More hands on activities yes!

I would like to see that there will be more

students, speakers and also hands on designing.

LOGISTICS

CONS PROS SUGGESTIONS

Venue

We could've decorated the

venue a bit and started

setting up earlier. Good enough since we

had to pay for venues

now. It housed the

participants well.

Check everything with the

venue prior to the event

to avoid cramming.

No seating plan / scheme

were observed which is very

important to events with a

number of participants.
