Branchette™ versus Welding Tee
Where and Why to use an Integrally Reinforced Branchette™ in lieu of a Welding Tee
Wherever welding fittings are required use an Integrally Reinforced Branchette™ in lieu of a conventional welding tee for the following reasons listed below:
a. Integrally Reinforced Branchette™ cost at least 50% less than a conventional welding tee.b. Fabrication time to install an Integrally Reinforced Branchette™ is at least 50% faster than a conventional
welding tee.c. An Integrally Reinforced Branchette™ requires two (2) welds, three (3) for a conventional welding tee.d. Thus the Branchette™ eliminates one (1) weld and non-destructive and inspection cost.e. Integrally Reinforced Branchette™ restores the run and branch pipes to their original pressure retaining strength.f. Integrally Reinforced Branchette™ can be consolidated over a great number of run pipe sizes,
which reduce a stocking locations inventory.g. Integrally Reinforced Branchette™ are flexible in fabrication, allowing you to install your run pipe,
then install the Integrally Reinforced Branchette™ at any location and orientation.h. Integrally Reinforced Branchette™ are available in a greater number of materials and schedules.i. Integrally Reinforced Branchette™ meet all current Piping and Pressure Vessel codes.
Fabricators, stocking distributors, and end user alike can enjoy the advantages that an Integrally ReinforcedBranchette™ employ over that of a conventional welding tee.
The diagrams below shows an Integrally Reinforced Branchette™ and a conventional welding tee. Both the conventional welding tee and an Integrally Reinforced Branchette™ forms a “T” intersection, joining the run and branch pipes together at a predetermined location.

IV. PRESSURE & TEMPERATURE RATINGS
Design temperature and other service conditions shall be limited as provided by the applicable code or regulation of thematerial of construction of the branch fitting.
Within these limits the maximum allowable pressure of abranch fitting shall be calculated as for straight seamless pipe, using the wall thickness as given in ASME B36.10 or B36.19 forthe size and applicable schedule of pipe, reduced by manufac-turing tolerances and other allowances.
V. CONSTRUCTION
The bore at the branch connection shall be straight at the pointof attachment to the run pipe. The base of the branch connec-tion shall be contoured to provide a good fit at the opening inthe run pipe, to permit complete penetration of the branchweld at all points, and allow for a root gap of 1/16” to 1/8”.
VI. MARKING
Each fitting shall be permanently marked in accordance withthe rules established in MSS Standard Practice SP-25. Themarking shall include, (but not limited to) the following: (a) Header Size or Consolidation (d) Material(b) Branch Size (e) Heat Code (c) Schedule (f) “WOI” Logo

Industry TerminologyAlloy Steel: Steel containing significant quantities of alloying ele-ments (other than carbon and the commonly accepted amountsof manganese, silicon, sulfur, and phosphorus) added to effectchanges in the mechanical or physical properties.
Brinell Hardness Test: A test for determining the hardness of amaterial by forcing a hard steel or carbide ball of specified diam-eter into it under a specified load.
Charpy Impact Test: A pendulum-type single-blow impact test inwhich the specimen, usually notched, is supported at both endsas a simple beam and broken by a falling pendulum. The energyabsorbed, as determined by the subsequent rise of the pendu-lum, is a measure of impact strength or notch toughness.
Check Analysis: An analysis of the metal after it has been rolledor forged into semi-finished or finished forms. It is not a check onthe ladle analysis, but is a check against the chemistry ordered,i.e. Product Analysis.
Dye Penetrant Inspection: Non-destructive test employing dye or fluorescent chemical and sometimes black light to detect sur-face defects.
Elongation: The amount of permanent stretch, usually referringto a measurement of a specimen after fracture is a tensile test. It is expressed as a percentage of the original gauge length.
Hardness: A measure of the degree of a material’s resistance to indentation. It is usually determined by measuring resistanceto penetration, by such tests as Brinell, Rockwell, and Vickers.
Heat: A Generic term denoting a specific lot of steel, based upon a steel making and casting consideration.
Heat-Affected Zone: That portion of the base metal which wasnot melted during brazing, cutting, or welding, but thosemicrostructure and physical properties were altered by the heat.
Heat Analysis: The Chemical Analysis determined by the steelproducer as being representative of a specific heat of steel.
Heat Number: The alpha, numeric, or alphanumeric designatorused to identify a specific heat of steel.
Heat Treatment: Heating and cooling a steel object in such a wayas to obtain desired conditions or properties.
Inspection:The Process of measuring, examining, testing, gauging, or otherwise comparing the unit of product with theapplicable requirements.
Ladle Analysis: Chemical analysis obtained from a sample takenduring the pouring of steel, i.e. heat analysis.
LAP: A surface defect, appearing as a seam, caused by foldingover hot metal, fins, or sharp corners and then rolling or forgingthem into the surface, but not welding them.
Magnetic-Particle Inspection: A nondestructive method of inspec-tion for determining the existence and extent of possible defectsin ferromagnetic materials. Finely, divided magnetic particles, applied to the magnetized part, are attracted to and outline thepattern of any magnetic-leakage fields created by discontinuities.
Manufacturer: The organization responsible for the conversion ofmaterials into products meeting the requirements of a productspecification.
Quenching: Rapid Cooling.
Reduction of Area: (1) Commonly, the difference, expressed as apercentage of original area, between the original cross-sectionalarea of a tensile test specimen and the minimum cross-sectionalarea measured after complete separation. (2) The difference, expressed as a percentage of original area, between originalcross-sectional area and that after straining the specimen.
Solution Anneal: heating steel into a temperature range whereincertain elements or compounds dissolve, followed by cooling ata rate sufficient to maintain these elements in solution at roomtemperature. The expression is normally applied to stainless andother special steels.
Stabilizing Treatment: Any treatment intended to stabilize thestructure of an alloy of the dimensions of a part. Heatingaustenitic stainless steels that contain titanium, columbium, ortantalum to a suitable temperature below that of a full anneal inorder to inactivate the maximum amount of carbon by precipita-tion as a carbide of titanium, columbium, or tantalum.
Stainless Steel: A Steel that conforms to a specification thatrequires, by mass percent, a minimum chromium content of 10.5or more, and a maximum carbon content of less than 1.20.
Steel: A material that conforms to a specification that requires,by mass percent more iron than any other element and a maxi-mum carbon content of generally less than 2.
Tensile Strength: In tensile strength, the ratio of maximum loadto original cross-sectional area. Also called ultimate strength.
Ultrasonic Testing: The method of detecting defects or welds bypassing high-frequency sound waves into a material, then moni-toring and evaluating the reflected signals.
Yield Strength:The stress at which a material exhibits a specifieddeviation from proportionality of stress. An offset of 0.2% is usedfor many materials.

The WOI-Outlet Means Reduced Inventory:This chart outlines the range of threaded, socket-weld, butt-weld and flanged outlet size consolidation, run pipe consolidations and outlet sizes not listed on the chart. Please contact WOI.
How it Works:Each outlet size indicated on the chart is designed to fit a number of run pipe sizes, e.g., The 1" fitting marked 36 - 4" x 1" will fit all run pipe sizes from 4" to 36". When placed on a 36" run pipe, there will be a maximum redial gap of 1/16" between the top of the run pipe and the base of the fitting at the crotch as shown on the sketch. This gap is negligible when welding.
