WHS MISSION STATEMENT: Wolcott High School provides a positive learning environment where
students are engaged in meaningful learning for success in the 21st century.
Principal’s Message
Greetings from Wolcott High School:
We have exciting news to share! Wolcott High School has earned a spot on the College Board’s 9th
Annual AP® District Honor Roll. The honor roll recognizes school districts in the United States and
Canada that have expanded access to Advanced Placement® coursework and maintained or
increased the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. We are very proud
of this accomplishment. The complete listing can be found at the following link:

In early January, Wolcott High School hosted the Wolcott Girl’s Movement Rally. Our School
Counseling department played an integral part in getting this event set up here at the school.
Inspiring local women presented panels and hosted activities with the intention of motivating young
women throughout the community.
On Thursday, January 24th, the Wolcott High School DECA club hosted a dance in support of the
Unified Sports Team open to the entire student body! Students filled themselves up with pizza
donated by Spartans II and baked goods prepared by Mr. Tutalo and his students. Former student
Brad Watts volunteered his time to DJ for the event. DECA will directly donate all proceeds to the
Unified Sports Team. The dance turned out to be a great way for special needs students to interact
with peers, where everyone had a fun night of music, dancing, and snacking . Unified Sports athlete,
Shaelyn Hamel stated “This is really fun! It’s like a homecoming for the Unified Team.
On Saturday, January 26, 2019 the Wolcott Middle School Robotics team competed at the Windsor
State Qualifying event. They attended this event having already qualified for the state championship
at the previous event. Twenty six schools competed at the event this Saturday, in teams from 6th
graders to 12th graders. Most teams present are from high schools. At the end of the day, the team
finished with a record of 5-1 and ranked 3rd overall. In the playoffs they made it to the finals before
losing in the last match of the day. Congratulations goes out to Eldin Krcic, Brandon Masse, Peter
Spada, Ethan Schneider, JT Plona, and Riley Wilson. The state championship will be held on Feb 24th
at the Greenwich Academy. It is free to attend.
On Monday, January 28, 2019 at 6:30 the Exchange Club of Wolcott and members of the community
gathered to celebrate the Excel Club and the installation of our new members. During the evening’s
proceedings, new member Makenzie Cossette performed the National Anthem and officers of the
club shared their thoughts and the thoughts of the membership in a presentation. Several members
from the Exchange Club of Wolcott attended: Mr. Mike DeNegris and Mrs. Annette Petruzzi shared
remarks; Mr. Joseph Krajeski, CT District Director, Division IV, Exchange Club attended and led the
installation ceremony; Mr. Roger Picard photographed the event. Refreshments were provided by
CCs Chocolates, La Fortuna Restaurant and WHS Culinary Program.
CAS is hosting the 36th Annual High School Scholar-Athlete Awards Banquet on Sunday, May 5,
2019, at the Aqua Turf Club in Plantsville. This prestigious recognition dinner honors high school
seniors who excel academically as well as play a CIAC-sponsored varsity sport. The students
selected for this year’s banquet are Tyler Shoban and Rachel Bennett. Congratulations to both
students for their outstanding efforts.
Sincerely,
Walt Drewry

Seventh Annual Senior Capstone Presentations
On Thursday January 10th, Wolcott High School hosted the Seventh Annual Senior Capstone
Celebration. Capstone is a senior elective that is designed to be the culminating experience of a
student’s educational experience. It asks students to plan, complete, and present a self-directed
project that reflects their personal passions and showcases their talents. An essential component
to the Capstone experience is that students are pushed to challenge themselves academically and
developmentally. The requirements of Capstone include developing an essential question,
submitting a project proposal for approval by the Capstone Committee, writing a research paper
addressing the essential question, developing a unique product, reflecting on their experiences
and challenges, and ultimately, presenting a formal fifteen to twenty-minute presentation at the
end of their journey.
This year’s Capstone projects were very diverse. On June 7th, students presented their
projects to a panel of four assessors and an audience of family members, and fellow students.
Special thank you to the following Capstone assessors: Mrs. Zimmermann, Ms. Fell, Mr. Toller,
Mrs. Giedra, Mrs. Villano, Mrs. Garcia, Mr. Cormier, Mrs. Sheehan, Mr. Guerrera, Mrs. Mazurek,
Mrs. Cuko, Mr. Pace, Ms. Daniel, Ms. Gunneson, and Mrs. Durant. The Capstone class is taught by
Mrs. Thies. Mr. McIntire serves as Capstone mentor.
Congratulations to the following Capstone students! Listed next to each name is the topic they
explored and the product they developed.
Madison Rotella investigated ways that schools can increase the mental supports they offer to
students with anxiety. She worked closely with School Counseling to create The Zen Den, a
supervised space where students with anxiety can go to decompress, participate in stress
relieving exercises, and have access to related literature. Special thank you to CASA for helping to
fund Madison’s project. Lynette Jurczyk examined strategies to educate students about the
dangers of eating disorders. Building upon research, as well as her own personal experiences,
she created a powerful documentary that profiles three young people who overcame eating
disorders. The documentary will be used in WHS Wellness and Psychology courses. Jeremy Chin
channeled his passion for filmmaking to partner with CASA to create a persuasive film warning
students of the dangers of vaping. He wrote, directed, and edited a short film called “The Vape
Effect.” John D’Amato’s project focused on career opportunities in the United States Navy. He
visited the US Naval Academy, interviewed naval veterans, and created a binder of resources for
future WHS students to use when applying to the Naval Academy. Tyler Braznkalski’s project was
called “Stepping Towards a Cleaner Community” Inspired by his passion for nature and wildlife,
Tyler worked to raise awareness of how we can reduce our environmental impact by organizing a
community awareness program and clean up of the Wolcott Walking Trail. He organized dozens of
sponsors and workers to host an immersive and educational town event. Inspired by her work with
the Unified Sports Team, Katie Croce examined how sensory walks can be used to help calm
students with sensory issues. She shadowed an elementary occupational therapist and created a
permanent sensory walk at an elementary school in Bristol and a mobile sensory walk that was
used by Life Skills students at WHS. Mya Chance examined ways to effectively unite a school
community. Guided by her research, she planned and executed Warm Winter Wishes Week in
December. Dedicated to the memory of Dave Pelletier, the week involved themed dress up days, a
food drive, and uniting activities such as holiday karaoke, team building challenges, and cookie
decorating. Students were also given the opportunity to send each other positive messages.
Congratulations to all Capstone students and best of luck as they finish their senior year at Wolcott
High School.
Wolcott High School Art Students in Scholastic Art Awards Exhibit
Two Wolcott High School students, Gabby Fazzino and Lily Heisler, show their winning entries into
the Scholastic Art Awards Competition held at the Silpe Gallery in Hartford this month. The
competition showcases the best art work selected from students throughout the entire state in a
professionally juried exhibit. Gabby is shown with her collage design of woven drawing and Lily
presents her subtle graphite rendering of architectural perspective. WHS students from the
National Art Honor Society and studio art were able to share the experience in a trip to the gallery
before participating in a docent-led session at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Harford.
Congratulations to our talented student artists! We would also like to thank the Wolcott Board of
Education for their continued support of cultural experiences in our schools.

Resume and Interview Techniques
A representative from Post University came into our Consumer Math, STEP Math, and Marketing
classes to talk to our students about resumes and interview techniques, budgeting, and other
related topics. She informed our students that there is a four-year fully paid scholarship to any
senior who is going into the business field. Two scholars will be chosen out of the applicants, but
they extended the deadline because they previously did not have any applicants.
The School Counseling department has been visiting the Consumer Math classes to go over
interviewing techniques and answers. They conducted poor and strong practice interviews for the
students to see. They will be conducting mock interviews for our students to go through as well for
either a career interest or a college interview.
Matthew Lavallee Software Engineer Guest Speaker
On Thursday, January 24th, Matthew Lavallee, a guest speaker from FactSet, came to speak to our
students about a career in software engineering. He emphasized that it's a very prominent field in
today's world and continues to grow. Matt also shared that collaboration is necessary to complete
any job, one of the six areas WHS focuses on for the Vision of the Graduate. He also had students
participate in a demo he created.

April 6, 2019 at 7:30
April 7, 2019 at 2
Please join the Wolcott High School Student Theater department for our production of “The Addams
Family (School Edition).” These weird, creepy, yet lovable characters from the epic 1960’s TV show are
back in a new, modern day story where they are struggling between their love for the darkness and
leading a normal life. It is when the Addams daughter, Wednesday, falls in love with the “normal,”
adorable, Lucas Beineke that everything goes awry and makes the entire Addams and Beineke
families question everything they know about themselves. This hilarious tale will feature Matthew
Ruegg as “Gomez,” Kaitlynn Styles as “Morticia,” Reagan Smith as “Wednesday,” Kelsey Guinipero as
“Pugsley,” Joseph Cantamessa as “Uncle Fester,” Lexi Waddington as “Grandma,” Dalmir Tupkusic as
“Lurch,” Dylan Senderoff as “Lucas Beineke,” Ava Onofreo as “Alice Beineke,” and Adrian McNeil as
“Mal Beineke.” Our students have been working incredibly hard on this fabulous production and we
hope you all come out to see it!
Tickets will be available after March 20th and will be $12 for General Admission and $10 for Students
and Senior Citizens. Hope to see you there!
Parents, Consider Joining WHS Parent Action Council (PAC) PAC is a vital link between the school, community and the parents it serves. Thus, parents are urged to join and take an active part in the PAC. It’s never too late to join. Please see the Membership form below:
Wolcott High School Parent Action Council
We meet the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm in WHS RC
Next Meeting Tuesday, March 12
Meeting dates are:
Nov. 13, Jan. 8, Feb. 12, March 12, April 9, and May 14th
*What is PAC? PAC is similar to PTOs at other schools. We meet on the second Tuesday of every
month during the school year at 6:30 p.m. in the Resource Center. We limit our meeting time to
one hour. By attending a WHS PAC meeting, you are given an opportunity to meet other parents,
communicate with school administrators, and to participate in planning for school related
programs, events, etc. In essence, the PAC is your opportunity to be involved in your child's
education.
100% of our PAC membership dues are returned to the students, so if you have not already
become a member, we encourage you to join. As a member, you will receive regular updates on
what is happening within the school and most recently we have been including minutes of our
monthly meetings for those who cannot attend. In the past, we have been able to award several
significant scholarships to graduating seniors attending institutions of higher education. We have
also sponsored or contributed to activities for each class. For each year that you are a member of
PAC, your son or daughter will earn points towards the PAC scholarships which are awarded to a
limited number of Wolcott High School graduating seniors. Please note that for a graduating senior
to be eligible for a PAC scholarship, their parent or guardian must be a member of the Parent
Action Council.
Thank you for your support!!
