Fit For the Future/ Amalgamations Update

Warwick Winn

General Manager

Page 6: Wollstonecraft Ward - North Sydney Council

• Review Panel proposes a mega-council for the lower north shore • Council submits to IPART it is “Fit” to stand alone • IPART deems North Sydney “Not fit” (failed to satisfy the “Scale and Capacity” criteria) • Councils given until 18 November to nominate a preferred merger partner(s) • North Sydney Council did not nominate any preferred merger partner.

• Neither did our neighbours (EXCEPT Willoughby, who nominated North Sydney)

RECAP

Page 7: Wollstonecraft Ward - North Sydney Council

Residents have told us they do not want to amalgamate because:

1. Rates would rise (North Sydney has some of the lowest rates in Sydney)

2. Services would drop (too expensive to maintain all services across a larger area)

3. Take on debt of other Councils – this is not fair

Why has Council taken this stance?

Page 8: Wollstonecraft Ward - North Sydney Council

Campaign to ensure North Sydney remains a standalone council: • Ads in the SMH and Daily Telegraph and Online • Established campaign website: www.stopthemegamerger.com.au • Councillors and volunteers handed out flyers and spoke to residents at various location on Saturday (they will be out again this coming Saturday) • Rally at Parliament House on 18 November • Banners have gone up on the poles around the CBD

What is Council doing?

Page 9: Wollstonecraft Ward - North Sydney Council

Encouraging residents to: 1. Have their say - visit our website to send an email to the Premier.

2. Help hand out flyers and information this Saturday. Please see staff if you want to learn more. Next Steps State Gov told Councils they will know their future before Christmas. Decision unlikely before North Sydney By-election (5 December).

What happens next?
