1. West Lothian Wolves Basketball Club

History

Basketball has a long history in West Lothian with such as Murray International Metals winning the equivalent of the British Basketball League on a regular basis. They played in the purpose built Forum in Livingston, which was knocked down to make way for the Designer Outlet. The Wolves began in 2000 for the BAA Millennium games. This was originally a Boys U14 team this squad stayed together and went on to play in the Lothian League at U16 and then U18 level. Many of these players are still with the club playing Senior Men’s Basketball. In 2003/4 an U16 boys team ventured into the National League under the guidance of club founder and basketball guru Alan Hastie. The club continued to play in the Lothian Under age Leagues.By season 2006/7 the club had grown to a stage where we had the following teams U14 Boys, U16 Boys, U18 Boys, Senior Men and U16 Girls all competing in their respective Lothian League. As well as a men’s recreational session once a week for those that should know better by now! Regulars at this session include some of those that played for MIM in the 80’s. In 2007 a women’s session also began. That season saw the Senior Men claim the Lothian League Men Division 2 trophy after an unbeaten campaign. Also in this season the U16 Boys finished runners up in the National Development League having lost out in the final game in an away tie to Dunfermline. They also lost the Lothian League play-off in July when several of our players and coach were on holiday, having beaten the eventual winners twice during the regular season!Summary of 06/07 seasonU14 Boys 4th in Lothian LeagueU16 Boys 3rd Lothian LeagueU16 Boys 2nd National Development LeagueU16 Girls 3rd Lothian LeagueSenior Men Lothian League division 2 ChampionsSeason 2007/8 saw us with U14 Boys, U16 Boys, U18 Boys, Senior Men Div 2 and Senior Men Div 1 competing in their respective Lothian League. 2. Club Structure and Operation

The Club currently provides opportunities for participation in basketball for both sexes across in the following age groups – * Primary Children * Under -18 * Under -14 * Senior Men

* Under -16 * Senior Women

Our Primary sessions provide a fun, non-competitive, introduction to the game of basketball for boys and girls. The Primary sessions provide instruction on the basic skills, use exercises to promote fitness and includes games to put the skill learned into practice.

At under-14 level the boys and girls training sessions are split into separate squads with the sessions building on the basics skills with drills and plays. The players also get their first taste of competitive Basketball through the Local Lothian League.

At under-16 the players share their training sessions with the under-18 squad, they will participate in the Local Lothian League and continue to provide an opportunity to participate in competitive Basketball.

At under-18 the players are competing at National League Level for the first time, they train along side the under-16 squad.

At senior level we have for both Men and Women teams. The Men have two squads, they compete in Division 1 Men and Women and also Division 2 Men and women in Lothian League Division 1. Both Senior Squads compete in the Local Lothian League. They also train at separate sessions.

At all levels from Under-14 to Senior all members have the opportunity to become involve in regional and international basketball through our affliatation to Basketball Scotland and involvement in the National Talent Development programme. The Club is well represented at international level across all ages, with one of our coaches being a National team coach and another leading the Talent Development Programme for the East.

Club Sponsors

The Club at the moment does not have a sponsor. We are looking for sponsors to help develop the Club and ensure we can offer Basketball to all potential members at an

affordable level. Are you able to help? Do you know someone who may be interested in supporting the only Team in West Lothian?

Page 8: Wolves Club Handbook

West Lothian Wolves Basketball Club relies wholly on Volunteers and the support of parents and friends. Everyone associated with the Club has enjoyed the success of the past years and our members have benefited from the work put in by the coaches and volunteers who keep the club running. But there is a limit to what this small group can do.

If the Club is to develop further we need to spread the load. We need more volunteers to assist with the operation aspect of the Club. The following are areas are just some of the ‘backroom’ tasks where the Club needs your help:-

Fundraising

Table Officials

Match Day Statics

Sponsorship

Man the Tuck Shop

Match Hospitality

If you think you can help in any way at all please let us know? You can e-mail us at [email protected], or you can discuss it will any of the coaches or

Debbie Marshall.
