This oral history project documents the experiences of women of the St. Louis metropolitan area, including the socioeconomic changes they experienced during the Great Depression through the post-World War II era (1940s-1960s) and how they established themselves as successful, enterprising women leaders.

In 2014, Dr. Touhill brought the project to William Fischetti, the former Associate Director of the State Historical Society of Missouri Research Center-St. Louis. Under Fischetti’s leadership, staff members recorded these interviews using a one-hour video tape and SD Cards while Dr. Touhill, Dr. Malaika Horne, or Maureen Zegel asked each interviewee a set of seven questions covering early childhood experiences, education, influences inside and outside of the home, professional pursuits, including career advancement, and awards received. The project continues with more than 200 interviews making up this collection.

Arrangement: The collection is divided into the following three series with one subseries:

Interviewee Files Interviews Books Nanora Sweet

(S1207) Women as Change Agents Oral History Collection 3

Scope and Content: Interviewee Files The Interview Files series contains curriculum vitae, biographical essays, and articles the interviewees donated to the State Historical Society of Missouri to supplement their oral history interviews. Materials of interest included newspaper and magazine articles written by or about them. For example, folder nine contains an article on lesbian heritage, written by Nanora Sweet for the Lesbian and Gay News Telegraph. This series only represents a small portion of the individuals who participated in the project. The materials in this series are arranged according to the dates Dr. Touhill originally interviewed them. Interviews This series consists of oral histories on DVD, as well as the accompanying transcripts. The women interviewed reside within the city of St. Louis and St. Louis County and discuss their experiences as women during the Great Depression, World War II, the fight for an Equal Rights Amendment, and the Civil Rights and Women’s Movements. Topics of interest include the interviewees’ reflections on the role their families played in their intellectual development, their perceptions of a female’s place in the hierarchy of higher education, the effect sexism had on their educational and professional advancement, and leadership activities they pursued. Some interviewees also discuss how the institution of marriage and family influenced their career. This series is arranged chronologically. Books This series contains articles, books, and a dissertation, written by or about the interviewees. Items of interest include a dissertation Ruth Bryant wrote to complete her Ph.D. in Banking from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Rutgers University, titled, “The Woman Executive: A View of the Manager’s Role.” Also included in this series is a book edited by Tessa Greenspan, the founder of Sappington International Farmers Market, titled Goal for IT: 30 Paths to Imagine More Success. The book contains chapters written by women entrepreneurs of several generations, from baby boomers to millennials, providing guidance on achieving success in the business world. The items in this series are arranged alphabetically, by authors last name. The Nanora Sweet subseries contains books of poetry Sweet either edited or wrote throughout her career as an Associate Professor of English Emeritus at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. An item of note in this subseries includes Mix of Securities, a collection of her poems previously published in St. Louis area publications, including the Forest Park Review, Loosely Identified (formerly the St. Louis Women’s Poetry Workshop, and River Styx Magazine.) The items in this subseries are arranged chronologically. Container List:
