It is my pleasure to welcome you to the second annual Women in Tax National Congress: ‘Leadership in Modern Times’. If last year’s enormously successful, sell-out, inaugural event is any indication of the importance of this community, then I am thrilled for what this year has in store. The Women in Tax brand is going from strength to strength with the launch of our Women in Tax website earlier this year, a platform that is vitally important for the whole tax community.

We have taken on your thoughts and feedback to develop and grow the program even further. This year’s theme is the importance of leadership for emerging and aspiring leaders, and current leaders keen to stay on the pulse for the future. Leadership is changing and we all need to be ready.

Welcome from Tracey RensPresident – The Tax Institute

As the tax profession continues to diversify and digitise, great leadership will be key. What makes a great leader? Is there a formula? Leadership is an interpretation which adapts to the needs of the environment through influence, collaboration and positivity. People focus, leader grooming, cultures of excellence, advocacy and portfolio careers are just some of the leadership topics that will be discussed and deconstructed during this important and diverse congress.

Session 1: Keynote addressDuring the opening keynote address, Brigadier Susan Coyle will share key aspects of her leadership philosophy with a primary focus on the importance of people and values-based leadership. Susan has progressed in a field that some would view as challenging for a woman, and what has guided her over the period is a value system that aligns with the “Pathway to change: Evolving defence culture”. In her address, Susan will explain the background of her values-based leadership approach, including her four priority lines of operation, and the positive results she expects from their implementation:

— People first – Susan believes in teams and people supporting each other in every aspect of day-to-day operations. She quotes from a Roman philosopher that supposedly said: “Luck is where the crossroads of opportunity and preparation meet”. This is such a great way to look at life, when you are prepared, all you need is the opportunity to arise to reach your goals.

— Leader development – for her personally, leaders who make a difference are exposed, visible, take courageous actions and are intentional.

— Strive for excellence – Colin Powell once said: “if you are going to achieve excellence in the big things, you must develop the habits in little matters. Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude”.

— Modernisation – as a team, each person should focus on developing capabilities that provide you with an edge over your adversary.

In this panel, our emerging leaders will share their views on:

— How to build an effective team and form lasting relationships with clients and colleagues in the digital and agile workplace of the future

Session 3: Going GlobalFor decades, globalisation fuelled by clever technology intervention has meant it is an important part of any leader’s tool kit to have a global network and be able to work in partnership with other leaders across the globe. Increasingly, for many leaders in these days of global mobility, the challenge is to not just work with leaders from other nations, but increasingly to parachute in and lead through them. In this session you will be provided with practical outcomes and learnings from:

— Jennie’s five-year journey as the first woman and first Australian to lead one of the largest law enforcement capabilities in the UK

— Her experiences in British cultural immersion

— The challenges of language barriers (even your own can trip you up)

— Being an Australian leader working in the UK, tasked with leading a massive transformation

— Her belief that leadership is all about influencing and working with and through others

Session 4: Multiple Roles and Portfolio CareersPortfolio career opportunities have existed for many years, with some people choosing multiple roles and diverse career options over the term of their career. The rise of the gig economy and the fast-changing expectations on the workforce mean it is now likely that portfolio careers will become the norm rather than the exception.

It is not necessarily a case of a complete change of direction. You might always work in tax. Or you might come to understand that your tax experience involves a broad range of skills that can be used in a broader context. The most important thing is to consider a portfolio career from the perspective of focusing on those areas which are important and interesting to you and communicating the value you can bring to these areas. To thrive in this environment, you need to develop skills that are specialised and learn how to apply those specialised skills in a diverse way. You need to learn how to utilise your knowledge, experience and relationships effectively to ensure that you are an attractive resource for a variety of roles.

This session has been planned to provide you with guidance on:

— What a portfolio career is – and whether it will work for you?

— The skills you need to possess/develop – and how to attain them

— Identifying the areas which matter to you most and communicating these effectively

— Confidently approaching opportunities to expand your professional horizon

— Maintaining the momentum while building your personal brand

— Using new opportunities as a value-add back to the profession and broader community in general.
