A WIN WOULD MEAN…

» The Hornets’ fi rst win over NSU since a 58-48 home victory two seasons ago.» DSU’s second MEAC road win of the season, third overall.» The Lady Hornets would match their conference win total from last season (3).

LAST TIME OUT…

DSU nearly erased a 19-point halftime defi cit on the road Saturday afternoon to the fi ve-time defending MEAC Tournament champion Hampton Pirates, but a season-high 38 turnovers was too much to overcome resulting in a 74-61 defeat. At game’s end, guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas fi nished with a game-high 25 points (10-of-23) for HU, while DSU’s Amber Bogard poured in a career-high 24 points (8-of-12). On the other end, Hampton collected 24 steals, including guard Kyani White fi nishing with a game-high six and Tate-DeFreitas coming away with fi ve. For Delaware State, Tierra Hawkins recorded her 11th double-double of the season, the most by any player in the MEAC, with 18 points (7-of-12) and 12 boards. Also on the glass, forward/center Nikkei Blackburn pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds, which is the seventh best in DSU single-game history.

HOT ON ONE END, COLD ON THE OTHER

So far in 2014-15, the Lady Hornets are tied for fi fth (62.5 ppg) in the MEAC in scoring and are fi rst in fi eld goal percentage (.426) with forward Tierra Hawkins sitting third (17.5 ppg), respectively. However, DSU is 12th in scoring defense giving up 75.9 points per contest and allow opponents to shoot 43 percent (711-of-1639) from the fi eld.

DOUBLE TROUBLE DOWN LOW

Despite DSU’s 90-84 loss to Binghamton on Nov. 15, forwards Tierra Hawkins and Amber Bogard showed a sign of things to come for the Lady Hornets’ frontline with both players recording double-doubles. For the season, Hawkins leads the team in points (17.5) and rebounds (8.3) per game, in addition to double-doubles (11) and sitting second in blocks (18). Bogard, who sat out last year after spending two seasons (2011-13) at Eastern Michigan, leads DSU in blocks (21) and is third on the team in rebounding (5.0 rpg). Scoring wise, she is averaging 12.3 points per contest and has tallied two double-doubles on the year.

BOARDING BLACKBURN

Forward/center Nikkei Blackburn’s 19-rebound outing in DSU’s loss at Hampton on Feb. 21 not only marked a career-high, but it was seventh most in DSU single-game history. For the year, the Bennettsville, S.C. native, has totaled fi ve double digit rebounding games, along with sitting second (7.2) on the team in boards per contest.

MOVING UP THE CAREER LIST, MILESTONE WATCH

Forward Tierra Hawkins eclipsed the 1700-point (1715) and 800-rebound (803) career mark, becoming only the third and fi fth player to accomplish this feat in DSU history… Guard Jade Washington (283) needs 17 assists to become only the second player in DSU history reach 300 in a career… Hawkins (70) needs three blocks to tie Barbara Burgess

(1984-89) for sixth all-time on DSU’s block list.

CAN’T SHAKE THE INJURY BUG

For the second straight year, the Lady Hornets have been hit hard on the injury front. So far this season, DSU has lost guards Bri Justice, Nateyah McLeod and Briyah Hill to season-ending knee injuries, whereas forward/center Nikkei Blackburn (ankle) returned in DSU’s loss North Carolina A&T on Jan. 24, after being sidelined the previous eight games. Guard Jade Washington (foot), meanwhile, returned to action against Hampton on Feb. 21 after missing the previous 10 games.

ROAD WOES

Since beating North Carolina Central on the road, 58-49, on Feb. 2, 2013, the Lady Hornets have dropped 33 out of their last 37 games away from Memorial Hall. This year, DSU will look to reverse the trend, despite playing 19 out of its 31 regular season games on the road.

AT THIS POINT LAST SEASON...

The Lady Hornets were 7-18 (3-9 MEAC), coming off a 79-68 win over UMES.

COMING UP NEXT...

DSU will return home to face UMES this Saturday (2 p.m.). Earlier this season, the Hornets fell on the road to UMES on Feb. 14, 96-59.

HAWKINS, BLACKBURN EARN PLAYER OF THE WEEK NODS

Posting a 2-0 mark with a pair nail-biting victories over NJIT (Feb. 3) and Bethune-Cookman (Feb. 7), Tierra Hawkins and Nikkei Blackburn received recognition for their stellar play on Feb. 9, as Hawkins earned MEAC and ECAC Division I South Player of the Week honors, while Blackburn was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week. For Hawkins, it marked the second time this season she’s won both awards, whereas this time she averaged a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds per contest, including matching a career-highs in points (34) and fi eld goals made (14) in DSU’s dramatic 72-71 win over Bethune-Cookman. Blackburn, meanwhile, averaged 13.5 boards in the two games last week, headlined by a 16-rebound eff ort in DSU’s 56-54 overtime at NJIT, which was the most by any Hornet this season.

FEAR THE HAWK

Senior Tierra Hawkins, who missed 14 games in 2013-14, including the fi nal 12 due to a season-ending shoulder injury, is aiming to continue her dominance as one of the best post players in the conference. Before going down, the forward out of Clinton, Md., was one of eight players in the country averaging 20+ points and 10+ rebounds per game, along with fi nishing as DSU’s leader in double-doubles (8) and earning MEAC Player of the Week twice. Throughout her stellar career, the 2011-12 MEAC Rookie of the Year ranks in the top 10 on DSU’s all-time list for most points, rebounds and blocks.

2014 -15 DSU Women’s Basketball | Game 26 | Feb. 23

A new era began on Thursday, May 31, 2012 for the Delaware State University women’s basketball team as President Harry L. Williams introduced Tamika L. Louis, a former championship junior college head coach and Division I assistant coach, as the new head coach.

Year two under Louis, the Lady Hornets were hit hard on the injury front to fi nish 2013-14 at 8-21 (3-13 MEAC). Notable non-conference wins for DSU, however, were victories at Manhattan (80-69) and a 90-83 overtime triumph over the Atlantic 10’s George Mason. Earning yearly honors was guard Raven Bankston receiving MEAC Third Team and All-Rookie Team recognition. Additionally, Bankston’s team-best 21.3 points per game was not only good for second in the conference and 25th in the nation, but her 595 points

set a new DSU single-season scoring record.

In her fi rst season, the Lady Hornets fi nished 10-21 overall, including 6-10 in MEAC action to earn the ninth seed in the conference tournament. Nevertheless, DSU took down the eighth-seeded Bethune-Cookman Wildcats in the opening round, 55-44, to snap a fi ve-year MEAC tournament skid.

Meanwhile, forward Tierra Hawkins was able to garner Second Team All-MEAC honors by leading the Lady Hornets in scoring (17.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.4 rpg).

Louis arrived at Delaware State with 14 years of coaching and recruiting experience on the NCAA Division I, Junior College and high school levels. Before accepting the position at DSU, she served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2011-12 season at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

“As the Lady Hornets’ head coach, I will be a servant-leader and hope that my energy, dedication and work ethic will be infectious to the young ladies on the team.”

From 2009-11, Louis was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for St. John’s University, where she was in charge of organizing all recruiting initiatives, game scouting, overseeing player academic progress and of-court mentoring. Additionally, she was responsible for the development of the Red Storm guards, including Second Team All-Big East and Freshman All-American Shennieka Smith.

Prior to her time at SJU, Louis served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the University of Illinois from 2007-09 where she was instrumental in signing the No. 2 and No. 3 ranked players in the 2009 class in the country, according to ESPN Hoop Girl and Blue Star rankings, in All-Americans Destiny Williams and Karisma Penn.

From 2002-05, she was the head women’s basketball coach at Mott Community College in Flint, Mich., where she led her squad to a 58-33 overall record during her tenure. The 2004-05 squad boasted a 16-0 conference record and was 27-7 overall en route to a NJCAA Region XII championship and bid to the NJCAA Tournament. For her eff orts during this stellar season, Louis was named the Michigan Community College Athletic Association and Region XII Coach of the Year.

Before joining the collegiate coaching ranks, Louis had stints as an assistant and associate basketball coach at Central High School in Fresno, Calif., Rhodes High School in Cleveland, Ohio and Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio.

After playing her freshman year (1993-94) at West Virginia University, Louis transferred to Fresno State, where she was the starting point guard and captain from 1995-98. She earned her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts Degrees in communications from Fresno State University.
