The goals for the 2003 Aurora University volleyballteam will be both a physical and mental challenge.

“With so many new players coming into theprogram and only a handful of players with collegeplaying experience returning,” Coach Jerry Angle said,“our team’s first goal is to understand what it takes tocompete at a high level and to develop the skills andmental toughness necessary to be one of the top teamsin the region.”

The schedule, with a good mix of competition, willtest the team early and often. The first two weekendsof the season find the Spartans playing at IllinoisCollege and Lakeland College.

“The Lakeland Tournament will give our players anopportunity to see what it takes to be competitive inthe region,” Angle said. “Three of the teams we playcompeted in last year’s NCAA RegionalChampionships. How we play will give us a bettergauge as to how hard we need to work and improve toget to the elite level.”

The rest of the season will prove as challenging asthe first two weeks with tournaments at WheatonCollege, University of Wisconsin at Platteville, andIllinois Wesleyan University as well as home matchesagainst Lake Forest College and North Central College.

The Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference schedulestarts with the Spartans traveling to Clarke College andfinishes with the NIIC Tournament at Eureka College inNovember.

2003 Spartans’ Review

Page 9: Women’s Volleyball 2003 - Aurora University · Volleyball and has taught for the United States Sports Academy in Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Recently, he served as a consultant to

“The conference will be very competitive thisseason,” said Angle. For the last few years, we haven’tbeen a contender for the conference title, but I feelwith hard work and some luck, we should be able tocompete. Our goal is to win the conferencetournament and qualify for the NCAA Championships. To do that, we will have to improve our fundamentalsand become a consistent offensive and defensiveteam.”

The returning players are young without a senior onthe roster, but they did gain valuable playingexperience during the past season and worked hard ontheir fundamentals and conditioning in the off season. The team will count on junior outside hitter LindsayMichael to carry the bulk of the offense as she shiftsfrom right side attacker to the strong side attacker.Junior Megan Wagner and sophomore Kayla Holmbeckwill also be counted on as outside hitters. Jessica Hoch, who started as the setter last season before an injurysidelined her, may also see some time as a right sideattacker. Junior Tia Kyriakoulis and sophomore AmyThoel come back as libero or defensive specialist tostrengthen the backcourt defensively.

The new recruits for Aurora University will becounted on to contribute to the success of the team.Transfer setter Coley Johnsen from Northern IllinoisUniversity will be a big addition to the team. “Coleywill give this team leadership and experience,” Anglesaid. “She has played at a high level for three years andknows what it takes to make a good team. As a setter, she has the ability to make our hitters better.”

In the middle blocking position, freshmen KatelynJorstad and Courtney Lillard will help with bothblocking and attacking. Julia Eggert, Kari Drewlow, andKaty Jefferson will help out both as hitters and passers.

“I feel we have become a more athletic team withour new players coming in. Now they need to developas players,” Angle said. “During the season, we willneed to blend our returners and new players and learnhow to play at the intensity needed to be competitive. If we can do that, we will have a winning team.”
