Washer FluidWasher fluid is always blue. Auto shops usually fill it up when you get your oil changed.

Engine OilLubricates internal moving engine parts. Engine oil should be replaced every 3,000 miles along with oil filters.

Different grades of oil; Conventional, Synthetic Blend, and Full Synthetic.

Should be a light brown color and not smell burnt.

Different grades of oil.

Check Owner’s Manual.

Coolant/AntifreezeCoolant is what keeps your engine cool so it doesn’t overheat. Heat is the worst thing for an engine. It runs through the radiator where it gets cool and then runs into your engine to keep it cool. It’s not always green, it can also be red, yellow, or orange.

NEVER OPEN RADIATOR CAP WHEN ENGINE IS HOT!

Power Steering FluidPower Steering Fluid lubricates the power steering pump to make it easier for you to steer. Without proper lubrication, components will start to fail. The pump is driven by the serpentine belt. Many cars are moving away from a hydraulic system, and moving to electronic systems.

Your car may not have power steering fluid

Transmission FluidTransmission fluid is vital to the operation and lifespan of your transmission. It is red in color and should be changed in regular intervals to prolong the life of your transmission.

It should not be brownish in color or smell burnt.

Brake FluidBrake fluid “powers” your brakes. Brake fluid is hydroscopic, absorbs water. Water in brake fluid is not good.

It can rust your brake lines from the inside out and it can cause the compression of the fluid to not be as effective.

BatteryA battery is what gives your car the voltage to start. You just need it to start the car and run the accessories.

If your battery has low cca’s, it could prevent your car from starting, especially on really cold or hot days.

CCAs = cold cranking amps

Air FilterAn air filter cleans the air that goes into your engine. It also affects your vehicle's performance.

If it’s really dirty the vehicle can get worse gas mileage and doesn’t “breathe” properly.

Page 11: Women's Automotive Seminar

Cabin Air FilterThe cabin air filter cleans the air from outside the car into the cabin where you sit. It also cleans the air for the HVAC system.

Serpentine BeltA serpentine belt drives the various components of the car, such as your alternator, air conditioning compressor, power steering pump, and water pump.

The belt is a very integral part of your engine. You can have a break down if this belt breaks. You’ll lose power steering, your alternator will stop charging, and the car will not be cool properly.

How to Jumpstart a CarYou jumpstart a car when you have a dead battery. You need jumper cables to do this. You would locate your car's battery or the jump leads. Some cars don’t have batteries under the hood so there is a spot for that under the hood of the car. You would then attach the jumper cables to the appropriate spots.

The red cable attaches to the positive terminal, which is red. The black cable attaches to the negative terminal which is also black.

It is very important not to switch them as it can cause damage to the car's computer system.

How to Change a Flat Tire1. Make sure when you pull over you are on flat level ground.

Get out the jack and tire iron.(Location in Owner's Manual)

2. Before you lift the vehicle with the jack, loosen the lug nuts while the car is still on the ground, do not remove them.

3. Use the jack to raise the vehicle,(jack locations in Owner’s Manual) when the vehicle is raised high enough remove the lug nuts and take the tire off.

4. Get the spare(Location found in Owner’s Manual) and put it on the vehicle. Then put the lug nuts on (in a star pattern). Tighten them as best as you can.

5. Lower the vehicle and remove the jack, tighten the lug nuts more if possible with the vehicle on the ground.
