International Outlook
A study from Belfast about women’s health states that the connection between social deprivation and diseases strikes mainly women. Low salaries, low occupational status and part-time employment affect women more.
In the past 30 years in the United States and internationally
depression rates are twice as high among women as among men, according to a study entitled “Depression and gender”, written by Frances M. Culbertson from the University of Wisconsin. Other researches estimate the rate to be as high as 3:1. (Klerman and Weissman, 1989; Wetzel, 1994).
National perspective Based on tests, the
frequency of neurotic and psychosomatic conditions requiring treatment is around
20-25% In addition to this, the
number of alcoholics is estimated at 990,000, that of drug users at 150-200,000, and the number of successful suicides is 4500-5000.
