MEET THE COACHING STAFFS: Gustavus Head Coach Mike Carroll is in his 13th season at the helm for the Gusties. He has compiled an overall record of 271-64-20 in 13 seasons on the bench and has the most coaching victories in the history of the program. Carroll, an Edina, Minn. native, competed in hockey and baseball at Minnesota State University-Mankato. After graduating with a degree in municipal recreation in 1982, Carroll played professional baseball in the Montreal Expos organization for two years.

Carroll is assisted by Steve Carroll (MSU-Mankato ‘81) - named one of the 10 greatest Mavericks in their men’s hockey program; Kirstin Peterson (Gustavus ‘11), a three-time All-American for the Gustavus women’s hockey program from 2008-11; and Matt Carroll, Mike’s son.

Joe Cranston is in his 13th season as women’s hockey coach at UW-River Falls. He is the only coach the Falcons have had in the team’s history. Cranston led the Falcons to the NCAA playoffs in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The 2009 and 2010 teams also won the NCHA playoff championships. The 2009 and 2011 teams also won the regular season NCHA title and the 2009 team advanced to the NCAA semifinals. Prior to the 2011-12 campaign, Cranston had a 194-102-30 career record at UWRF. In all of women’s college hockey he was 11th in winning percentage (.641) among all coaches. His 194 wins was third among Division III active and all-time coaches.

Cranston is assisted by Jim Walsh (UW-River Falls ‘86), Mandy Stokes (UW-River Falls ‘03), Jenna Johnson-Saewert (Concordia-Moorhead ‘06) and Cassi Campbell (UW-River Falls ‘11).

ABOUT RIVER FALLS: UW-River Falls has enjoyed three consecutive seasons with at least 20 wins. During that time frame, the Falcons have claimed two NCHA playoff championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances.

This season, the Falcons are led by Alice Cranston and Allie Olson with eight points each. Cranston has a team-high six goals with two assists, while Olson has four goals and four assists through nine games. Emma Nordness leads the team with five assists. In goal, Melissa Deardorff and Ashley Kuechle have traded off defending the Falcons net. Deardorff has played in five games with a goals against average of 1.96, save percentage of .907 and a 4-1-0 record. Kuechle has seen action in four games with a goals against average of 2.00, save percentage of .922 and a 4-0-0 record.

Through nine games, the Falcons are averaging 4.3 goals per game, while allowing 2.0. They’ve also out-shot their opponents 284-to-211 for a total of 39 goals (.137).

END OF THE ROAD: The Gusties hold the all-time series record 16-4-2 against River Falls, including consecutive seasons where they ended the Falcons season in the NCAA tournament. The Gusties won 4-1 in the first round last year and 2-0 in the same round of the 2009-10 campaign.

PAGE 3 - GUSTAVUS ADOLPHUS COLLEGE GOLDEN GUSTIE WOMEN’S HOCKEY GAME NOTES- DEC. 6

DOMINANT COACHING: Both head coaches in Tuesday’s match-up have set a high standard of coaching in collegiate women’s hockey. Gustavus Head Coach Mike Carroll has the second most victories among all Division III coaches with 271, while River Falls Head Coach Joe Cranston comes in right behind Carroll in third with 202 career victories. Carroll’s .787 win percentage is the best in Division III, while Cranston’s .641 win percentage ranks third.

BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE: Gustavus senior forward Allie Schwab had a career night last Friday against Augsburg scoring a career-high four goals - marking her first career hat trick - and added an assist for a five-point game. It was the first five-point performance by a Gustie since Jan. 27, 2006 when Kelly Crandall scored two goals with three assists in a 12-2 win over St. Olaf. The Stillwater, Minn. native leads all Division III with four game-winning goals, ranks second in the nation in point per game (2.25) and third in assists per game (1.25).

ON THE DOTS: Winning face offs may be overlooked at times, but it certainly can make the difference in the outcome of a game. Last weekend, the Gusties won 83-of-117 face offs in the weekend series against Augsburg. Allie Schwab led the Gusties on the dots by winning 27-of-36 face offs over the weekend. Through eight games, the Gusties have won 295-of-441 face offs (.669).

BEST START EVER: The Gustavus women’s hockey team is off to its best start in its 15-year history at 8-0-0 overall and 6-0-0 in the MIAC.

POLL POSITION: Eight games into the 2011-12 campaign and without a blemish on their record, the Gusties jumped back up one position to No. 6 in the national rankings according to the latest United States College Hockey Online (USCHO.com) poll with 81 points.

MIAC LEADERS: With a perfect 6-0-0 mark in the conference, Gustavus obviously tops to MIAC standings, but they also top various statistical categories. They rank No. 1 in the league in scoring offense (5.83 goals per game), scoring defense (1.83 goals allowed per game), penalty kill (95.0-percent) and special teams net (+9).
