MEN’S INDOOR REVIEW

Clemson Posts 12th-Place Finish at NCAA Championships For the second straight indoor season, Clemson put together a top-15 fi nish at the NCAA Championships. The Tigers got a runner-up fi nish in the pole vault and third-place effort in the 60m dash. Arizona State won the competition with 44 points, while Clemson tallied 14 between two student-athletes. It was the 10th time in Bob Pollock’s 20-year coaching tenure that Clemson placed inside the top 15 at the indoor national meet.

Tigers Third at ACC Indoor Championships Travis Padgett and Mitch Greeley won individual events on the fi nal day of competition to lead Clemson to a third-place team fi nish at the 2008 ACC Indoor Championships, which were held at the Eddie Smith Field House in Chapel Hill, NC. It marked the fi rst time since the 1996 meet that Clemson did not fi nish in the top two at the ACC Indoor Championships, and just the second time in Bob Pollock’s tenure the Tigers were not fi rst or second. Padgett won his fi rst-ever indoor championship in the 60m dash after breezing through the fi nal with a time of 6.63. He went on to fi nish fourth in the 200m dash, leading a host of scorers in that event from Clemson. C.J. Spiller was runner-up (6.70) in the 60m dash to Padgett. Greeley was the highlight of the fi eld events action for Clemson. The Rock Hill, SC native earned his second career ACC championship in the pole vault after clearing 17’8.5”. Greeley’s win gave the Tiger program multiple individual ACC champions for the 17th consecutive indoor season. Sophomore teammate Chris Spear was third, earning his fi rst All-ACC honor in the vault. Matt Clark was All-ACC for the second straight year in the 5000m run. The senior out of Hyannis,

MA put together a time of 14:29.37 to fi nish third in the event. He is the fi rst student-athlete from Clemson to earn all-conference recognition in the 5000m in consecutive years since Joe Gibson (1998-99). Zach Berg was also an All-ACC performer for the Tigers. He fought off nagging back injury issues to fi nish third in the 35-pound weight throw. It marked the fi rst All-ACC honor of Berg’s career.

Padgett Earns Second Straight Indoor All-America Honor Travis Padgett came into the national championships in hopes of defending his NCAA crown in the 60m dash. While he came up just short in his bid, he earned his second straight All-America certifi cate in the event after fi nishing in third place. He put together his top time of the season, a 6.60, in the fi nal and fi nished behind only Richard Thompson and Trindon Holliday of LSU. Padgett Named ACC’s Most Valuable Track Performer After the conclusion of the ACC Championships, the league’s head coaches vote to determine a Most Valuable Performer for both track events and fi eld events. For the fi rst time in his career, Clemson’s Travis Padgett earned the honor from the ACC for track. He won the league’s 60m dash title and fi nished fourth in the 200m as well. It was his fi rst ACC indoor championship in the sprints, and third overall at the time of the competition. It was not, however, his fi rst honor from the conference. In 2006, he was named ACC Outdoor Freshman-of-the-Year.

Greeley National Runner-Up in the Vault Heading into his senior season, Mitch Greeley already ranked fi rst in Clemson history in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault. He had aspirations of going over the 18-foot mark for the fi rst time in his career. By February, his aspirations had come true. Greeley cleared 18’1” at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet on February 9, which was the nation’s top mark at the time. He went on to clear 18’0” the next week at the Tyson Invitational in Arkansas, the same facility that hosts the NCAA Championships in March. At the national meet, he cleared 17’8.5” and fi nished runner-up to Rory Quiller of Binghamton. If not for a cracked pole, Greeley might have had a shot at defeating Quiller for the national title.

Greeley, Foster Honored for Success Following the conclusion of the 2008 indoor season, the Clemson men’s program received some national recognition from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA). Charles Foster was named Southeast Region Assistant Coach-of-the-Year, while senior pole vaulter Mitch Greeley was named Field Athlete-of-the-Year. It marked the second straight year the Tiger program has been honored by the USTFCCCA for its indoor track & fi eld efforts. In 2007, Bob Pollock was named Southeast Region Coach-

of-the-Year and Jacoby Ford was cited as the region’s top track athlete. Greeley was an All-American and ACC champion in 2008 in the vault, where he cleared 18’0” on two occasions. He was an automatic NCAA qualifi er and is the school record-holder in the event. Foster, in his ninth year with the Clemson program, coached Travis Padgett and C.J. Spiller to All-America fi nishes in the 60m dash. He also coached Padgett to an ACC championship in the event.

Spiller Sprints to All-America Status C.J. Spiller, in his second year with the Tiger track program as a two-sport athlete, shocked the nation after posting a ridiculous 60m time of 6.58 in early February at the Carolina Classic. His time was tops in the country for much of the 2008 indoor season. His effort was good enough for an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships, where he continued his outstanding sophomore season with a 10th-place fi nish. He was one of the top eight American fi nishers, thus earning his fi rst-ever indoor All-America certifi cate. He previously was an outdoor All-American his freshman year with the 4x100m relay squad.

MEN’S OUTDOOR REVIEW

Clemson Ties for 21st at NCAAs Clemson put together a top-25 team fi nish for the second straight season. Florida State won its third straight national championship with a total of 52 points, while LSU and Auburn tied for runner-up honors with 44 apiece. The Tigers fi nished with 12 points, all courtesy of the 100m dash. Clemson had a second and fi fth-place fi nisher in the event, marking the fi rst time since 1991 the Tigers had two All-Americans in the 100m dash at the same national championship meet.

Tigers Runner-Up Again at ACC Outdoor Championships Clemson came up short in its bid to upset three-time defending ACC outdoor champion Florida State, but the Tigers came away with a runner-up fi nish and had a great shot of taking the title up until the fi nal event. The Seminoles posted a total of 141 points, while Clemson came away with 124. The Tigers ran away with their second-place position, beating N.C. State who placed third at 96.5 points accumulated. Travis Padgett (100m) and Mitch Greeley (Pole Vault) won ACC championships, while the 4x100m relay team of Padgett, Trenton Guy, Corey Brown, and Cowin Mills also took fi rst place. Padgett also claimed all-conference status as runner-up in the 200m dash. Others earning All-ACC honors were Jacoby Ford (100m), Matt Clark (5000m), Zach Berg (hammer throw), Mike Feathers (decathlon), and Miller Moss (decathlon).

Tigers Fifth at East Region Championships The Tiger track & fi eld program was fi fth in the team standings at the 2008 NCAA East Regional in Tallahassee, FL on May 30-31. It marked the fi fth time in the six-year history of the regional format the Tigers were in the top 25 of the team standings. Clemson produced two individual champions, only the second team in school history to achieve that feat. Travis Padgett won the 100m dash, which was his second East Region title, and Mitch Greeley captured the pole vault championship in his fi nal appearance. Padgett automatically qualifi ed in the 200m dash as well after turning in a personal best. Jacoby Ford punched his ticket to nationals after placing fourth in the 100m dash. C.J. Spiller was also a scorer in both the 100m and 200m. Greeley won the pole vault after struggling through the opening height. He was Clemson’s lone scorer in the fi eld events.

Padgett Breaks Collegiate 100m Record Travis Padgett represented the Tiger track & fi eld program at the U.S. Olympic Trials and came away with a collegiate record in the 100m dash. He posted a time of 9.89 in the quarterfi nals at the Trials, which topped Ato Boldon’s record (9.92) from 1996. Padgett ran a 9.85 in the fi nals, but it was a signifi cantly wind-aided time.

Mills, Padgett Compete at Olympic Games Senior Cowin Mills and junior Travis Padgett competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in

Beijing. Mills qualifi ed with the 4x400m relay team for his home country of Trinidad & Tobago. He competed in the preliminary round in China. Padgett fi nished fourth in the 100m dash at the U.S. Trials in Eugene, OR, which earned him a spot with Team USA’s 4x100m relay team at the Olympics. He performed quite well on the second leg in the preliminary round, but a botched exchange on the fi nal leg ruined any change of a medal for the U.S.

Padgett National Runner-Up in 100m Dash For the third straight year, Travis Padgett improved on his position in the 100m dash. He was fourth as a freshman in 2006, then third as a sophomore. Padgett posted a 10.16 into a slight headwind in the 2008 fi nal and fi nished runner-up to Richard Thompson of LSU. He became the fi rst three-time All-American for the Clemson program in the same outdoor event since Shawn Crawford in the 200m dash (1998-2000). He was the fi rst three-time All-American in the 100m dash since James Trapp, who won the honors each year from 1990-92.

Ford Earns First Outdoor All-America Honor Two-sport athlete Jacoby Ford put on quite the impressive display of talent at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Just months removed from surgery to repair a broken ankle suffered in the 2007 football season, he earned All-America honors in track with a fi fth-place showing in the 100m dash. It was Ford’s fi rst career All-America honor outdoors and second overall of his track career. He became the fi rst two-sport athlete to be named an outdoor All-American from Clemson since Airese Currie in 2002 (4x100m relay). Pollock, Padgett Earn ACC Outdoor Accolades Following a second-place team fi nish at the ACC Championships, former Head Coach Bob Pollock and junior Travis Padgett were honored by the conference after a vote from the league’s head coaches. Pollock was named Coach-of-the-Year, his ninth and fi nal outdoor honor, while Padgett was determined as the league’s Most Valuable Track Performer. It marked the fi rst time since 2004 that Pollock was named ACC outdoor Coach-of-the-Year. Clemson fi nished fi rst or second at the ACC Outdoor meet in 17 of Pollock’s 20 years. He owns a total of 18 Coach-of-the-Year awards, when combining indoor and outdoor seasons. He coached a pair of individual champions in 2008, as well as the 4x100m relay team. Travis Padgett won the 100m dash, while Mitch Greeley took home the pole vault crown. Eight of his student-athletes earned All-ACC fi nishes in individual events at this year’s meet. Padgett earned the MVP honor indoors in 2008 after capturing the league championship in the

60m and placing fourth in the 200m dash. The Shelby, NC product won his third straight title in the 100m dash at the league outdoor meet. He also ran anchor leg for the championship 4x100m relay team and was runner-up in the 200m dash. It was Clemson’s fi rst victory at the league outdoor meet in the 400m relay since 2004.

Padgett Records Third Straight ACC Championship in 100m Dash Travis Padgett made history at the league meet April 19 by becoming the fi rst men’s athlete in ACC history to win the 100m dash three separate times in his career. The 100m dash has been held at the conference meet since 1976, and never before had a student-athlete won the event three times. There have been multiple two-time champions, but Padgett is the fi rst to ever claim three championships in the event.

Padgett Named Southeast Region Track Athlete-of-the-Year Following his second region championship in the 100m dash and third-place effort in the 200m dash, junior Travis Padgett was named Southeast Region Track Athlete-of-the-Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA). It marked the fi rst regional honor of Padgett’s career. He was one of two Tigers honored by the coaches’ association in 2008, as pole vaulter Mitch Greeley was named the region’s indoor Field Athlete-of-the-Year.

WOMEN’S INDOOR REVIEW

Clemson Eighth at ACC Championships Patricia Mamona earned All-ACC honors in the long jump and triple jump at the 2008 ACC Indoor Championships, leading Clemson to an eighth-place team fi nish at the meet. Virginia Tech won the meet with a total of 138 points, while the Lady Tigers collected 32 over the three-day event. Mamona earned her second straight indoor All-ACC honor after fi nishing runner-up in the triple jump. She had a mark of 43’3.25”, a few inches shy of her personal best in the event. She was also third place in the long jump, earning her fi rst all-conference accolade in the event. She hit a mark of 19’10.75”, a personal best. Her mark was just four centimeters shy of an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the long jump. April Sinkler, a freshman out of Stafford, VA, was fourth in the long jump. She had a jump of 19’9.75”, fi nishing just one inch behind teammate Patricia Mamona who placed third. Sinkler also had a strong score with a fi fth-place fi nish in the triple jump. Her mark was 39’3”. Caroline Kennedy followed up an impressive freshman season by fi nishing fourth in the pole vault as a sophomore. She now owns top-four fi nishes in each of her fi rst two seasons with the Lady Tiger track & fi eld program. Kennedy had a clearance of 12’1.5”. In the high jump, Anastasia Wilson scored for Clemson after a clearance of 5’4.5”. Linda Buchholz was also a scorer for Clemson in the pentathlon.

Lady Tigers in the Indoor Record Books A host of student-athletes made moves into the top-fi ve performance lists in Clemson history during the 2008 indoor season. Chief among them was Patricia Mamona, who strengthened her second-best mark in school history in the triple jump. While she still has a ways to go to catch former NCAA champion Gisele Oliveira (2002-05), Mamona hit a mark of 43’7” at the Virginia Tech Last Chance meet. Her effort solidifi ed her status as an NCAA Championships qualifi er. Mamona fi nished 12th in the event at nationals. The high jump records at Clemson underwent a major shakeup in 2008. April Sinkler, Clemson’s highly touted freshman, moved into second place on Clemson’s all-time list after she cleared 5’8.75” at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet. She placed third at that meet. Anastasia Wilson, strictly a high jumper as a sophomore, jumped 5’8.5” to move into fourth in Clemson’s record books. She achieved the clearance while fi nishing runner-up at Virginia Tech’s last chance meet. Caroline Kennedy also moved up the ladder in the pole vault after an outstanding performance at the last chance weekend. She cleared 12’6”, which matches her personal best from the 2007 outdoor season. Kennedy fi nished seventh in the event at Tech, but showed her potential to reach even greater heights in coming seasons.
