You know what’s fun? Planning a music festival. For the past 10 years all of us have been spoiled by the continuous eorts put forth by our “Founding Mothers.” For those of us who inherited thefestival, we had no idea of the amount of work that it takes to put on a fully functional event. But our love for the WRMF, the artists and their music, and all of you gave us the motivation to beastute learners. Our hope is that you hardly notice the transition and that your WRMF experienceis as extraordinary as ever.

THANK YOU’S:Dear Attendees, year after year you show up for the music and the fun – and we just love that about you. Thank you for your continuous support as we grow this amazing festival while maintaining the same wild wonderful spirit that brings us back to the desert every August.

Lots of love and thank you to our founders: Carol Gnade, Laurie Wood, Lu Prickett, and Jeri Tafoya. Thank you for turning over your “baby” and trusting us to continue what you began.

Dear Performers – ever year you blow us all away by your talent, passion, and creativity. This festival not only exist for you, but because of you. Thank you for making the trip out to the desert, we hope you nd it just as magical as we do.

Thank you to our volunteers – we cannot function without your dedication and excitement!Whether you are local, traveling from Salt Lake, or anywhere else in the nation, your time isprecious and we appreciate you more than you will ever know.

Thank you to the continued support of the Entrada Institute (as WRMF exists as a program within the organization). The board members have stepped up and helped facilitate the transition. We look forward to years and years of cooperation with Entrada. Also, a special thanks to the Scholl family for continuing to make available the special space that is Robber’s Roost.

Wayne County residence and businesses – Thank you times a million! Thank you for opening your businesses and resources to us year after year. Let’s face it, there is no way we could have WRMF without your support. We love your part of the state almost as much as you do, and we pledge to continue to be the best community partner.

Hi, hello, greetings!Welcome to the 11th annualWomen’s Redrock Music Festival!

I want to be your

FRIDAY NIGHT

's voice is said to sound as pure as water from a mountain stream.

SWEET RIDEKaryn Annis a geologist…a graduate level geologist. She knows rocks. But she is also a geologist of the heart. Her songs excavate its bright seams of gold and dark rivers of coal, its trials and tribulations, the exultations of love and loss. To quote Neil Young – she is a miner for a heart of gold. In her own words:

“I’m perpetually propelled towardssongwriting, to explore and shed light on the duality of life every time my pen hits the paper. That feeling of the more I know the less I seem to know. Writing is my avenue of expression and articulation, how I work through unknowns, fear and loss. As a friend once said of me, ‘these are not songs for music’s sake, these are songs for journaling’.

A dedicated student of Blues, Soul and Gospel, Karyn’s singing and songwriting follow a long line from piano roll Blues and Jazz of the 20’s and 30’s onward thru 60’s troubadours such as Bonnie Raitt to modern day artists like Adele, Sheryl Crow, Martin Sexton, Brandi Carlile, Fiona Apple and Foy Vance.

Karyn Ann grew up in upstate New York-- a middle child, a Gemini amid two siblings. From a young age, she had a knack for melodies, and recalls “always wanting to sing, in the car, in my room, anywhere.” At age 6, she began piano and over the years has added violin, guitar and ukulele amongst her musical friends. Her rst and abiding love has always been voice, but the direction of her future musical path revealed itself when she chose to transition from singing choir tunes to writing and performing her own music.

KATE MAcLeodWhile singing from the Wasatch Mountains in Utah, her highly acclaimed songs often precede her as other artists sing them on stages across the country.

Her songs compel music publications such as Sing Out! Magazine to claim that Kate MacLeod "channels the spirit of the great Carter Familyclassics." She has opened for artists such as Rosanne Cash, Dan Fogelberg and Greg Brown, but performs winning concerts of her own across the country.

Her songwriting style and live performances display an unbreakable link between traditional music and cutting-edge contemporary songwriting. A song-writer and ddle player, she has written music based on historic events and personalities, collection of songs based on books, and some commissioned for cultural projects.

Whether in a song or on her violin, she captures our history, our landscapes, and our lives in the varied music that she creates. This is no more obvious than in current projects she is developing. Kate is now in the process of recording sessions for her original violin pieces, with an accompanying tune book, and a collection of music inspired by the regions of Utah. 7

Daphne WillisCollaborating across multiple genres ranging from Roots-Rock and Pop to Hip Hop andElectronic Dance Music, classifying Daphne Willis in musical terms is no easy task. With infectious melodies delivered with lyrical precision and honesty, the songs and performances of Daphne Willis are sincere, compelling and relevant. Raised in Chicago, Daphne now calls Nashville, TN home and cites inuences as varied as Elvis Costello and Michael Jackson, but her musical output cleverly incorporates such inspirations into a style that is refreshing and contemporary in a way that suits her songs best.

With over 1,000 shows under her belt the past several years, Daphne has been spreading her music to passionate fans across the United States. Her infectious personality combined with her incredible talent caught the eyes and ears of Sony/ATV Music Publishing in early 2016 who quickly signed Daphne to a worldwidepublishing agreement. This partnership has resulted in several of her songs being recorded by other artists and used in Commercial, Film and TV productions such as “One Tree Hill,”“Empire” and a Microsoft ad campaign.

A beautiful oasis in the heart of an extraordinary landscape

Boulder, Utahwww.boulder-utah.com 435-335-7460

Women's RedRock Music Festival began with a simple mission:

To empower and support independent women musicians from around the U.S. and the world by providing a beautiful and intimate venue to bring their music to the public.

And while many people were involved inbringing women’s music to Torrey—beginning with Laura Scholl inviting women musicians to play weekends at the bookstore to the founders creating an annual festival—in the end,Women’s RedRock Music Festival is about a movement and its brave pioneers.

It’s about passing the courage, passion, inspiration and support to the next generation. To that end, WRMF and Entrada want to createa sustainable program—The Legacy Program—that communicates the gift of the music, the place of belonging it creates, andour hopes for the future.

One piece of the Legacy program celebrates the women's music movement and its beginnings. To do so, WRMF will annually feature a Legacy Artist, someone who broke ground for women in the music industry and thereby made it easier for women to get stage time and recognition.

By performing at WRMF, the Legacy Artist will remind those familiar with her music of just how far we have come. At the same time, new and younger audiences will be introduced to the music along with the history of women’s music.

The second piece of the Legacy Program represents a commitment to seek out and nurture new and emerging artists in order to sustain the women’s music movement. Each year WRMF/Entrada will award a new-songwriter/artist grant. The young/new artist selected as the next-generation recipient will receive a $1,000 grant to assist her in thewriting/recording of new works. In addition, she will be contracted to perform the following year as part of the WRMF lineup. The WRMF/Entrada Legacy program will be funded by people like you. People who believe that music by women for everyone is not only important but is necessary for our well being. If you are interested in being a sustainingcontributor to the WRMF/Entrada Legacy Program, please see the WRMF website atwomensredrockmusicfest.com. By honoring the past and supporting the future, WRMF/Entrada Legacy Program is dedicated to continue its mission for generations to come.

MAMA JThe purpose of Mama J is to remind people that we are all connected. We are all the same. The only thing separating us is the belief that we are dierent. Mama J’s music is soul. It’s rock. It’s raw. It’s real. Each song is a prayer. An armation.

Mama J’s music inspires people to look inwards. Not outwards. Mama J is free. She is a survivor. She has overcome a lifetime of trauma and stands triumphantly on the other side as the highest version of herself. She stands in the light and in her truth.

Available now is her rst EP, "Mama" which is available for FREE to download atwww.MamaJ.love

Heather Mae

It is rare to nd an artist who startles your senses on many levels, engaging the part of your brain that makes you shake your hips, but also raise your st in solidarity.

does just that.

An imaginative lyricist with a powerhouse voice, Heather Mae is forging new ground with her newest album. Entitled “I AM ENOUGH”, the collection was dubbed a KickStarter Sta Pick within it’s rst week, smashing through its $15,000 fundraising goal and on it’s ocial release date - June 10th, 2016 - peaked at #58 on the iTunes Pop Charts. All of this without the support of a label.

With producer Mark Williams (Sucker Punch Recording Co.) at the wheel, the collection of ve songs is a bold breakout from her former years as a folk singer-songwriter strumming aukulele. Mae breaks ground in “I AM ENOUGH” not only for her interesting indie-pop sound, but also for her musical take on touchy subjects ranging from LGBTQ discrimination, gender stereotypes, body image, and mental health issues. This is what sets Mae apart—she seeks to write music for those that need an anthem and doesn’t shy away from tackling topics not often heard in pop music.

The title track to her new album, ‘I Am Enough’ is an ode to body positivity and breaking away from self-imposed aiction to t into what society denes as beautiful.

“I see this record as a platform for change. Pop music with a mission.” says Heather. “I am inspired by artists who are able tocombine both.”

‘Wanderer’ and ‘No Poor Soul’ are reections of Mae’s own experience of publicly coming out and the relief associated with nding love that accepts you just as you are— externally and internally. ‘Stand Up’ wraps up the entire record with its challenge to listeners to ght against intolerances that so many of us face, such as racism, sexism and other prejudices.

Namoli BrennetDubbed “among the best folk-rock artists in the country" by the Tucson Weekly, Namoli Brennet has been touring with her own brand of moody and inspiring folk since 2002. A recent Iowa transplant, Brennet was based out of Tucson, AZ for a decade and her music still carries some of the stark, persistent beauty of the desert. She's a breathtaking and moving performer, and her sweet, road-weary voice is as quick to deliver her wit and humor as it is a turn of phrase.

Mae also includes references to the Black Lives Matter movement and the June 2015 SCOTUS ruling on gay marriage which destroyed DOMA.

After graduating in 2008 from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York, directly afterwards she embarked on her rst project entitled ""One Year of Songs.” Thecollection was an ambitious project which involved writing and recording one song every day for a year. The record received local and national attention (Washington Post dubbed her songs ""charming"") as she toured the country in support of the project.

As her star began to rise, Mae was diagnosed with nodules on her vocal chords. With her future suddenly in limbo, she was forced to re-evaluate her career and life.

“I was told I would never sing again and I went through an introspective time. It was having to sit in silence that changed me. I hadn’t ever used my voice for good and that became my mantra as I recovered,” Mae says.

Heather realized she had never really written about the issues that meant the most to her.

“I knew that I had been too afraid to put myself out there and be exposed. It’s one thing to write about love, it’s another thing to write about loving your partner - who is a woman. To sing about what life is like as a plus size woman, the self acceptance and right to feel great about myself, and social issues that meant the most to me. Before I went through this health challenge, and almost lost it all, fear held me back. It wasn’t worth the risk but I got the message that it can be taken away in a second, and I knew it was time to step up.”

She vowed that her new music would not only be dierent, but sincere and signicant. In spite of some of her darkest days, Mae relearned how to sing. She took a step away from her previous folk-heavy style and her new sound is a unique fusion of indie-pop Tegan and Sara meets dynamic vocalist Etta James.

Mae says. “Two years ago, I was told that the denition of who I was no longer existed. The thing that kept me going was believing that I wasn’t alone in my brokenness. We all fail at times and it is so much easier if we have more hands to help us up, rather than to point out our aws. That is what this record is. A humble hand to help you get o your a**.”

Mae was selected as a nalist in the 2016Kerrville New Folk Competition, International Songwriting Contest, Falcon Ridge Songwriter Showcase, and as a Folk Alliance International Ocial Showcase performer. Mae has been lucky enough to perform, work, open for, and study one-on-one with diverse talents such as Tom Paxton, Paul Pfau (The Voice S8), Rebecca Loebe (The Voice S1), Amy Speace, Paul Reisler, and Ron Browning (Carrie Underwood,Wynonna Judd), and Beth Nielsen Chapman (“This Kiss”).

She is currently on tour in support of her EP. Find out if she's playing a show near you, on her website: www.heathermae.net

“When people listen to my new music, my mission is that they feel they’re not alone and that they’re

moved to rediscover the best versions of themselves,” 14

MARY TEBBS

Since 1995 she has garnered many awards for her songwriting claiming the Best Songwriter, Best Solo Performer, Best Folk/Acoustic (Salt Lake City Weekly), and receiving a national nomination for Best Jazz Song from GLAMA (Gay Lesbian American Music Awards – based in New York City). Mary’s new releaseLandscape of Love Vols. 1 & 2 shares songs that travel across the many dierent emotions that arise from a love relationship – attraction, longing, desire, anger, heartache. It’s a moving listening experience and one that many people can relate to.

The fan favorite, "Beautiful" tells the story of nding the guts to tell someone you'reattracted to the truth about your attraction. The City Weekly says, "Tebbs’ voice is warm and slightly lower, reminding me of the vibrato-rich voice of Lucinda Williams, and anyinstrumental accompaniment—mostlyacoustic guitar and lap steel—on the album is deftly done, allowing that voice to shine," and "...no song ever falls into the category of'typical love song' because Tebbs’ songwriting is so thought provoking and fresh..." Mary’s music is about sensuality, inspiration, honesty and humor. Her performances are about laughter, reality, rawness, and connection. The City Weekly has described her songs as“Swinging music that’s not afraid to wear its heart on two or three sleeves.” Well said. Mary adapts warmth, richness, and the down-to-earth realness of simplicity. She is original, entertaining, and real. Listen and enjoy.

Among her inuences she names Patty Grin and Eliza Gilkyson, but she manages to carve out a vocal niche of her own using her sweet, edgy alto. Zocalo magazine calls her music "Gorgeous and introspective", and we'retempted to agree.

She's a top-notch songwriter who's known for her insightful lyrics and poetic language, but it's her live performances that set her apart from the conventional label of singer/songwrit-er. On stage she reveals deft acoustic guitar chops, often incorporating foot percussion, loops, vocoder and Kaki-King style tapping to create a broad, layered soundscape. Namoli's 2012 Release, "Live" was recorded over the course of 6 months and 10,000 miles. It shines an intimate spotlight on a performer who is at once arresting and vulnerable, someone who, in the words of Keith Jarret, is willing to "Go deep into the cave to come up with the light."

A 4-time Outmusic award nominee who was recently named in the inaugural Trans 100 list, Namoli was also the recipient of the Tucson Folk Festival Songwriting Award and a nalist in the ISC songwriting competition. Her 2010 release 'Black Crow' garnered critical acclaim and was named one of KXCI FM's top albums of the year. Her music has been featured on NPR, PBS and in lms including the Emmy-award winning documentary ""Out in the Silence"", which details the struggle of a gay teen grow-ing up in rural Pennsylvania. She spends 5 to 6 months a year on the road touring both the US and Europe and is currently at work on a new album with a release date in 2017."

Mary Tebbs has been called the EllenDeGeneres of singer/songwriters. It's not unusual for her o-the-cu, quick-witted and endearing performance style to have you laughing in one moment and crying the next. The Las Vegas Weekly says, “Tebbs is full of weathered innocence, dealing with love, sensuality and heartache, building it all on a solid foundation of blues and slow mountain funk.” A pretty accurate description.

Katie Kuel is a composer and musician based in Seattle, Washington. Her rst full-length album, Pearls, was released in October of 2015 after a successful Kick-starter campaign. Her rst EP, Animal Prag-matist, was released in 2013. Katie’s songwriting is both innovative and thoughtful, with a contemporary sound that draws from blues, jazz, and folk music as well as her training in classical cello and jazz piano. An openly queer artist, she explores concepts of sexuality and feminin-ity throughout her works. Katie has been featured as the musical act in popular podcast Welcome to Nightvale, and in PopMatters as one of the ‘best musical hopes to break out on 2016.'In the words of author Adam Finley: Pearls sounds like alternate-reality Regina Spektor, heavily steeped in the Pacic Northwest with bright piano and a gor-geous voice gliding, rich and eortless, through craftily constructed songs that balance whimsy and self-awareness. Pearls is available on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon and Bandcamp, and Katie can be found performing at venues throughout Seattle and the greater Pacic Northwest.

DEE DEE DARBY DUFFINWhen Dee-Dee Darby-Dun was just 6 years old, her grandmother would invite her friends over and say to the young girl, “Baby, get up and sing.”

She hasn’t sat down yet.

Darby-Dun is always up and singing somewhere, whether it be at church, on the musical theater stage or paying tribute to jazz greats Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald at the Grand Theatre or the KenleyCentennial Amphitheater.

Her performance at the Kenley amphitheater was so popular last year, she was invited back this year. On Sunday, Aug. 21, she’ll be live at Kenley during the Sunday Concert Series, sponsored by the Davis Arts Council. She will be singing some of her favorite jazz pieces.

“Over the past eight years, I’ve grown to love jazz and it’s become my thing to do,” she said. “I was always looking for a niche, and it never happened until I found jazz. For me, it wasdenitely my ‘ah ha’ moment.”

When she started singing jazz,Darby-Dun said, she found itcame easy for her.

“I found it fun and melodic, too,”she said. “With jazz, you don’tjust sing the same thing day inand day out. Part of the ideabehind music is to interpretpeople’s feelings. I’ve foundjazz is the best genre to do that.”

Respected around the world for her music and activism, her joy and passion inspire people to join in her celebration of the human spirit. Equally compelling at her shows or through your speakers, her music fully engages listeners in the world around them.

Holly has made a career speaking to anyone in the world who believes in peace, justice, and femi-nism, a wonderful spectrum of humanity. Born in Ukiah, CA in 1949, Holly began singing in high school, including work with a local folk group. She built on her performing career with acting parts on Mod Squad and appeared in a number of guest roles in seminal 70s TV shows like Room 222 and The Partridge Family. In 1970, she was a cast member of the Broadway musical Hair. Following the Kent State shootings in May of that year, the entire cast staged a silent vigil in protest. The song, “It Could Have Been Me” (which was released on A Live Album, 1974), was her heartfelt response to the shootings. In 1971, she joined the Free The Army Tour, an anti-Vietnam War road show of music, comedy, and plays organized by antiwar activist Fred Gardner and actors Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland.

Holly was one of the rst women to create an independent record company, paving the way for women like Ani DiFranco and others. Her goal was to promote and produce music by politically conscious artists from around the world, a mission that Redwood Records fullled for nearly 20 years.

Often cited as one of the founders of the Women’s Music movement, she not only led the way for outspoken women in the music world, but also worked for peace and multicultural consciousness. Throughout her long career Holly has worked with a wide array of musicians, including Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Arlo Guthrie, Mercedes Sosa, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs, Harry Belafonte, and many others. Holly Near has been recognized many times for her work for social change, including honors from the ACLU, the National Lawyers Guild, the National Organization for Women, and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences; she was named Ms. Magazine Woman of the Year and received the Legends of Women’s Music Award.

During her travels in the Pacic with the Free the Army show, Holly became a globally conscious feminist, linking international feminism and anti-war activism. She was an active participant and coalition builder in what she calls the “heady days” of 70s activism, when so many movementswere gestating and jostling with one another.

Tera Hunter was born and raised in the gorgeous state of Utah. She is best known as a high school art teacher who also likes “to Art”. She is an illustrator, painter, sketcher, photographer, designer and annoying adult to hundreds of future artists. Her art reflects her interests in nature and humanity, and she is always looking for new and challenging techniques to further her knowledge and skills. Tera has done a few commissions over the years, including the poster for the Women’s RedRock Music Festival in 2013. She was thrilled to do the poster for this year’s festival.

“I love the colors of the southern Utah

landscape and I appreciated theopportunity to explore female archetypes,

especially after this year’s turmoil.”

Colleen and Jolene Mewing are this year’s emcees. They have been coming to the music festival since its 2nd year. They are excited to introduce this year’s attendees to some amazing artists.

Their passions include Equality, Animals, Theatre, Music, and just about anything that has to do with making this world a safer and more loving place for everyone. They have four fur babies, all cats (so they come by the Mewing name naturally).

Colleen moved to Utah when she was 13 years old from her home state of South Dakota. She majored inJournalism at Weber State University, where she became Editor-in-Chief of the college newspaper--she worked on the newspaper for three years. She has always had apassion for writing and editing. Her major led her to a job at Hill Air Force Base, where she has worked for 30 years.

Colleen met Jolene in 2011 at an Uh Huh Her concert, an event set up by the OWLS of Utah Facebook group—at the time, Colleen was an admin. She has always beenpassionate about the group which provides women within the community a safe and arming place to meet and make new friends.

When two women in the community decided to move out-of-state, they asked if Colleen and Jolene wouldcontinue their work in Utah as the local organizers for Marriage Equality USA. Colleen and Jolene had a tough decision to make—continue to be Admins on OWLS or help out the non-prot organization as they couldn’t do both. They opted to volunteer their time working with Marriage Equality USA. They faced many fears together, but watched and celebrated with numerous couples after Judge Robert Shelby struck down the marriage ban in Utah on December 20th, 2013. Both realize ourcommunity’s work is far from over and believe thattogether, we can still accomplish many things.

Nothing is impossible!

Jolene was born in Downey, CA, the youngest of sixchildren. Being the youngest, she learned how to talk really fast if she wanted to get a word in edgewise and be heard. Jolene’s mother divorced her ‘father’ when she was seven years old, which led them to live in Utah with Jolene’s ‘biological father’. Unbeknownst to Jolene, she was actually the product of an aair her mother had with a Mormon Missionary. Jolene had a rough childhood coping with the many secrets that came her way. As a result, she battles depression and anxiety, but does her best not to let that stop her.

When her gay nephew committed suicide in 2010, she decided she would no longer remain silent. Jolene now

steps out of her comfort zone and speaks up and attends rallies to show her support. She marches in honor of her nephew’s memory at suicide prevention walks or is there when a rally needs people to show up. Being involved has been a struggle, but if she can do it, she knows others can, too. Being involved has also brought many rewards in the wonderful friendships that have been made.

Colleen and Jolene are very proud of their daughter, Meghan, who just returned from an internship at NW Trek Wildlife Park in Washington State. She is pursuing a career as azookeeper. Meghan’s passion is to create empathy for all animals in hopes of preventing them from becoming extinct.

Colleen and Jolene want everyone to know that it’s important to be kind to one another, because we can never truly know what is going on in the lives and hearts of others.
