Match background• Italy have never failed to reach the last eight of a UEFA Women's EURO and are on a run of three consecutive 2-0wins against Russia in this competition.

• They met in the 2009 group stage in Helsinki and goals in the last 13 minutes from Melania Gabbiadini and TatianaZorri took Italy through at Russia's expense in a group topped by Sweden.

• Italy and Russia were then drawn together in 2013 qualifying. The Azzurre triumphed 2-0 home and away.

• Pamela Conti scored both goals in Italy's home game and Patrizia Panico struck twice in Russia.

• Russia did win their two other competitive encounters, 3-1 away and 2-1 at home in 2003 FIFA Women's World Cupqualifying.

• Current Russia coach Elena Fomina played in both matches and scored in the 3-1 victory. She was also involved inthe 2009 group fixture.

• Including friendlies, the sides have met nine times with Italy winning six to Russia's three and leading 15-7 on goals.

• Their most recent meeting was in December in Brazil, Sara Gama, Valentina Bergamaschi (not in the finals squad)and Ilaria Mauro on target in a 3-0 Italian success.

Team factsItalyEURO 2013: Quarter-finals

EURO best: Runners-up (1993, 1997)

How they qualified: Group 6 runners-up, W6 D0 L2 F26 A8 Pts18

Coach: Antonio Cabrini

One to watch: Melania Gabbiadini (forward, Verona)

What to watch out for: Only Norway can match Italy's record of qualifying for 11 final tournaments – and the Azzurrehave never gone out before the last eight of any EURO – but they will not travel to the Netherlands among thefavourites. While the Italians lost narrowly to Germany in the 2009 and 2013 quarter-finals, a qualifying campaign inwhich they were beaten home and away by Switzerland is more representative of their actual form – especially sincelong-standing forward Patrizia Panico switched to coaching the men's Under-16s.

That is not to undervalue a team with Sara Gama, Alice Parisi and Melania Gabbiadini (sister of Napoli's Manolo), yeta 3-2 victory against Scotland in the 2015 Cyprus Cup remains Italy's solitary win against any of the other 15qualifiers since UEFA Women's EURO 2013.

RussiaEURO 2013: Group stage

EURO best: Group stage (1997, 2001, 2009, 2013)

How they qualified: Group 5 runners-up, W4 D2 L2 F14 A9 Pts14

Coach: Elena Fomina

One to watch: Elena Danilova (striker, Ryazan-VDV)

What to watch out for: Russia have tended to falter in the group stage as reliably as they have qualified, though theywere unfortunate in 2013 to miss out on the quarter-finals via a drawing of lots with Denmark. This time round, only a5-0 victory in their last qualifier against Croatia ensured the Russians avoided a play-off by virtue of goals scored, ahead of fellow runner-up Romania, and recent results have not been promising.

Among Russia's key players are a couple of veterans of the side that won the 2005 UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship. Defender Anna Kozhnikova is now the skipper and prolific striker Elena Danilova seems to haveput injuries behind her. Alongside her there is more youthful attacking talent in the shape of Ekaterina Pantyukhinaand Nadezhda Karpova. Elena Fomina, so often the hero on the pitch, took over as coach in 2015.
