CAPRI• Location:is an island in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the

Sorrentine Peninsula, on the south side of the Gulf of Naples in the Campania region of Italy. The main town Capri on the island shares the name. It has been a resort since the time of the Roman Republic.

• Theme:The world culturally significant regions and landscapes include areas of striking natural beauty preserved over the course of centuries of human settlement; places where humans have adapted to the environment in innovative ways, such as by building terraces in mountainsides or canals in floodplains; and places where distinctive patterns of human settlement have arisen in response to special opportunities presented by the land, as exemplified by historic mining towns and vineyard communities.

HISTORY•The island has been contiguously inhabited from as early as the Paleolithic era.• it was first used as a resort area by Romans when Ottaviano (soon to be Augustus) took possession of it in 29 BC. •After changing hands throughout the Middle Ages, Capri grew as a tourist destination when its first modern hotel was built in the 19th century.•Caesar Augustus was the first to discover the charm of Capri when he visited the island in 29 BC. So taken was he with the island's beauty that he traded the nearby fertile Ischia for it with the city of Naples.•This Mediterranean jewel, yearned for and exalted in some of the world's most famous lyric poetry, is the island of Capri

Facts• Capri has been a favorite retreat of artists, movie stars, and other VIPs in

modern times• Visitors to Capri have many choices of picturesque churches, museums and villas. Popular

attractions include Villa Jovis, a Roman villa and fortress that sits atop Mount Tiberio; La Grotta Azzurra that is accessible only by boat; and the medieval Church of the Cross in the center of Capri.

• Capri is an enchanting and picturesque island made of limestone rock.

• Capri satisfies tourists with its The Blue Grotto is one of several sea caves, worldwide, that is flooded with a brilliant blue or emerald light. The quality and nature of the color in each cave is determined by the unique lighting conditions in that particular cave.

• This discovery, the remains of an ancient landing place and the work on an underground tunnel, create an image of a natural cavern adorned by statues. The grotto was known to the locals under the name of Gradola, after the nearby landing place of Gradola, but it was avoided because it was said to be inhabited by witches and monsters.
