Dixon backs QF/MU pactTOURISM Australia has rolled

out its big guns to lend support for the proposed Qantas and China Eastern Airlines alliance, with the Australian carrier’s ex-boss now called into the fight, Travel Daily can reveal.

Chairman of Tourism Australia, Geoff Dixon has joined the mass of support that consider the pact between Qantas & China Eastern to be good for the country, even though the ACCC has indicated it is, for now, against the tie-up.

In a submission on behalf of Tourism Australia & made public overnight, the former Qantas chief reiterated the objective of the organisation was its Tourism 2020 strategy - to grow the value of overnight visitor spend to beyond $115 billion per year.

“Tourism Australia and Austrade are leading the effort to drive Australia’s tourism performance to reach this goal. Key to this is the strong growth in visitation from Asia, particularly from China,” Dixon commented.

He told the competition watchdog that China is Australia’s most valuable market in relation

to visitor spend, and alone has the potential to be worth up to $13b to the economy by 2020.

China also represents the third largest market for visitor dispersal - travelling beyond Sydney, Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane.

“Given the proposed joint cooperative agreement between Qantas and China Eastern would leverage both airlines’ domestic networks, it will potentially increase Chinese visitor dispersal by improving connectivity to Australia’s regional areas,” the former airline bigwig remarked.

Dixon argued that one benefit of the QF/MU alliance would be to boost air services between the two countries - “a worthy and desired outcome”, he added.

He concluded that TA was in support of the Qantas-China Eastern deal “in anticipation of increased services between the two countries to help realise the significant contribution of the China tourism market to the Australian economy”.

Other QF/MU supporters have included the Federal Govt, ATEC, TTF, SYD & BNE airports & more.

World Expeditions - come back to Nepal

WORLD Expeditions is urging Australians to “put Nepal top of their travel wish list,” with the company now taking bookings for the coming season.

Despite the devastation wreaked by the recent earthquake, Nepal will suffer even more if there’s a major decline in tourism, with World Expeditions ceo Sue Badyari saying she’s been fielding enquiries from travellers booked in the season ahead.

“We need to be very clear that it will be business as usual in Nepal from September,” she said.

World Expeditions staffers are already investigating the condition of trails and bridges in the Everest and Annapurna regions, and will complete their due diligence during the May-Sep monsoon season.

Most routes were “fortunate to escape the wrath of the quake with little damage,” Badyari said.

TRAVELLERS are used to seeing a clever towel arrangement in their room on returning at day’s end, but this is a step too far.

Cleaning staff at the Four Marks Hampshire in London have showed their imagination and offended a guest by leaving a very suggestive towel arrangement in his room.

While making up his room, the crew member found a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey on the side table, before creating the below.

USTA urge Open Skies calmPRESIDENT and ceo of the US

Travel Assoc Roger Dow has called for calm in the heated dispute by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines which allege the ‘Big Three’ Gulf carriers are receiving unfair subsidies on flights from the Mid East to USA.

On their radar are Emirates, Etihad Airways & Qatar Airways.

In an editorial piece titled ‘Don’t Mess with them’ which appeared in the Chicago Tribune, the US Travel Association (ATA) boss urged the outlet’s editorial board to “broaden its perspective on the Open Skies issue beyond the complaints of a few US airlines”.

Dow claims the 30yo Open Skies agreements, “which enjoyed the full & active support of US airlines when written - have worked”.

The industry heavyweight said airfares are 32% cheaper on Open Skies routes compared to regulated routes, which are directly supporting the American economy.

“Make no mistake: If American, Delta and United succeed in limiting Open Skies in one market, it will destroy the very foundation of Open Skies around the world,” Dow warned.

“Then we’d be back to an era of regulated aviation, higher fares

and fewer consumer choices.”Dow concluded that tampering

with Open Skies would harm the benefits of the burgeoning international travel market, “perhaps irrevocably”.

Viking Sky delayedVIKING Cruises chairman and

founder Torstein Hagen has blamed a hold up in construction of Holland America Line’s 2,650-pax ms Koningsdam for a delay of one of its two new ocean liners planned for delivery in 2016.

The company launched the 930-passenger Viking Star in Mar and will officially christen the ship this coming weekend in Bergen.

Viking was intending to christen two sister-ships of Star next year, Viking Sea and Viking Sky.

“We will have to accept that because Koningsdam has been hugely delayed, there will be only one new Viking Oceans ship next year, but there will be two in 2017 and I want to see 10 by 2020,” Hagen is quoted saying in the UK’s Mirror.

ABC Kids World for Gold CoastDREAMWORLD today revealed

it will open a new attraction next month, inspired by the popular characters of TV’s ABC Kids.

‘ABC KIDS WORLD’ builds on a decade-long partnership the theme park has shared with The Wiggles and will see characters such as Jimmy Giggle, Hoot and B1 & B2 (the Bananas in Pyjamas) brought to life as the next phase of Dreamworld’s evolution.

The new world “will be every child’s fantasy-come-reality where their characters will come to life in an interactive and colourful

world of fun, rides and games,” Dreamworld declared today.

ABC KIDS WORLD will operate alongside the existing Wiggles World attractions, with rides based on experiences pulled from Giggle and Hoot, Play School and Bananas in Pyjamas.

Rides include the Giggle & Hoot Pirate Ship and Hop & Hoot ride, and for pre-schoolers there will be Bananas in Pyjamas Fun Maze.

“With ABC KIDS WORLD we are offering even more worlds for families, extending on our success with Wiggles World as well as Dreamworld’s existing attractions of DreamWorks Experience, legendary family and thrill rides, animals & water slides,” he said.

Australia off LGBT listTHE President of Gay & Lesbian

Tourism Australia has expressed outrage at the nation’s politics & marketing as Australia slides off the radar as a potential holiday destination for the segment.

Rod Stringer says Australia is losing grounds, to other global destinations, notably absent on recent holiday wish lists of the most gay-friendly places to visit.

Destinations such as Uruguay, Iceland, Denmark, Spain and New Zealand are among top locations, with visitation fueled by new same-sex marriage laws.

“When you look at the destinations that are featured on these kinds of lists there’s a common thread – they are actively promoting a gay-friendly welcome and, in some cases, a progressive equality is cultivating a sense of confidence for travellers to visit,” Stringer said.

WELCOME to Money, TD’s Tue feature on what the Australian dollar is doing.

INCREASING interest rates in the USA, combined with last week’s local drop, have seen the Australian dollar continue to drop back against the greenback.

The Aussie is also weaker against the British pound which has stabilised after the strong Conservative following in last week’s UK general election.

Nervousness over the Greek economy is casting a shadow on European currency markets, while traders will take a lead from tonight’s Federal Budget.

Spirit of Tassie reimagined

Tuesday 12th May 2015

ON the eve of the naming of the finalists (to be announced tomorrow 13th May, 2015) for this year’s National Travel Industry Awards, it is very exciting to see such a broad field

of travel businesses across all 37 categories. It is by far our biggest year ever for finalists. This

week the esteemed judging panel of twelve travel and tourism industry experts have been assembled to undertake the important process to “judge” and determine the winners in 23 of the categories.

To all the finalists who will be publicly announced tomorrow, the very best of luck for NTIA 2015. No doubt this year’s ceremony is shaping up to be another very big event for the travel industry.

On to matters ATAS: as a part of the continued value that ATAS participation brings, the release of the new Consumer Flyer will provide an excellent benefit to ATAS participants when talking about why ATAS is important.

There is little doubt that industry and travel agents have found the benefit already, given the extremely large numbers of participants who have become registered, but the addition of the new Consumer Flyer provides ATAS agents with a very helpful tool.

The flyer provides the consumer with a range of benefits that an ATAS agent can deliver and the 10 tips to consider when selecting a travel agent, but more importantly, why the consumer should book with an ATAS accredited agent.

This is the message and service that members of AFTA have been wanting AFTA to deliver for years and now with the added benefit of ATAS accreditation, we can make robust, positive and meaningful claims of which ATAS accredited agents can be proud.

We have already received excellent feedback from AFTA members about this flyer and I am sure will be just an another excellent benefit of being ATAS accredited. For a sneak peek at the flyer, CLICK HERE.
