UNDERSTANDING WOOD FLOORING

Types of Wood FlooringUNDERSTANDING WOOD FLOORING

Wood Flooring Grades

All of our solid and engineered wood flooring is graded to order by our in house wood flooring technicians for colour, sap, and knots. As grading is done by human eye, a small percentage of the boards may fall outside the normal grading parameters and therefore the following descriptions should be used as a guide to the overall appearance of the floor and not a guarantee.

We cannot accept rejection of a complete floor based on a small number of boards being outside the grading parameters and we strongly advise that our floors are installed by a professional wood flooring installer who will remove any defects within the normal wastage allowance.

Select GradeSelect grade wood flooring is designed to have a clean consistent colour, with minimal sapwood (less than 3%) and virtually no knots. Where knots are present they will be unobtrusive pin knots, or smaller than a 5p coin. Virtually no filler will be found within a select grade floor, but if used, it will be carefully chosen to complement the wood.

Mixed GradeOur most popular grade of flooring is our mixed grade, which is designed to look as nature intended. Floors will contain a variety of select, nature and rustic grade boards to create a natural variation in colours, grain patterns and knot sizes.

Nature GradeNature grade wood flooring contains a greater variation in colour than select grade floors, both in terms of heartwood, as well as sapwood (up to 5%). Knots will be present, some of which will have been filled with a suitably coloured wood filler, but the majority will be smaller than a 10p coin. Occasional small checks or cracks may also be found across the growth rings.

Engineered Wood FlooringX-Press Clic

3 ADVANTAGES

- More stable than solid wood flooring

- Glue-less floating installation

- Clic sound confirms boards are fixed correctly

- Suitable for electric & water based underfloor heating

- Only available in a 14mm board thickness

- Maximum board width of 209mm

7 DISADVANTAGES

Engineered Wood FlooringTongue & Groove

3 ADVANTAGES

- More stable than solid wood flooring

- Available in widths up to 300mm

- Suitable for water based underfloor heating

- Choice of 15 or 20mm thicknesses

- Not suitable for electric underfloor heating

7 DISADVANTAGES

Solid Wood FlooringTongue & Groove

3 ADVANTAGES

- There are few real advantages of solid wood flooring in comparison to engineered wood flooring

- More susceptible to movement- Must be nailed or fully bonded to a

suitable subfloor- Maximum board width of 200mm- Thicker than engineered floors

7 DISADVANTAGES

We offer a complete range of engineered and solid wood flooring with a variety of specifications and jointing systems to suit all applications. In some cases the specification or jointing system must be used due to the environment in which it is being installed, such as a clic floor over electric underfloor heating, but in many cases more than one board specification or joining system may be used. For specific advice regarding the correct specification and jointing system for your project please contact our sales team for more information.

UNDERSTANDING WOOD FLOORING

Types of Wood Flooring Finishes

Natural Oil

3 ADVANTAGES

- Retains the natural texture of the wood

- Available in a range of colours

- Easy to repair

- Requires a buffing machine to apply

- More expensive than lacquered floors

- Periodic maintenance required

7 DISADVANTAGES

Hardwax Oil

3 ADVANTAGES

- Easy to apply - no buffing required

- Quick to dry

- Highly resistant to scuffs and scratches

- Available with a range of additives

- Periodic maintenance required

- More expensive than lacquered floors

7 DISADVANTAGES

Lacquer

3 ADVANTAGES

- Maintenance free

- No additional finishing required after installation

- Cheaper then oiled floors

- Easily scuffed and scratched

- Difficult to repair

- Builds an artificial layer on the wood

7 DISADVANTAGES

Hardwax oils penetrate deep into the pores of the wood and produce a hard wearing, water and dirt repellent surface. We exclusively use Saicos hardwax oils which are unique in providing an open pore surface which allows the wood to breathe, reducing the swelling and shrinking of the wood. Saicos are also the sole oil manufacturer whose products meet DIN53160 ensuring your floor is saliva and sweat resistant.

Natural Oils penetrate into the top surface of the wood enhancing the natural grain and structure whilst providing an easy to maintain, water resistant surface. We exclusively use Woca VOC free natural penetrating oils.

Unlike oiled finishes lacquers are a surface building finish, providing a highly water resistant layer directly on top of the wood. Lacquers are particularly suitable in environments where minimal maintenance is critical, but care must be taken to avoid damage as repairs generally require the entire floor to be refinished.

Colour Finishes

WHITE COLLECTIONInspired by the renowned ‘New England’ style, The White Collection is dominated by crisp, clean whites, and pale greys. The handful of lightly brushed finishes resonate with natural coastal textures, giving the grain definition and enhancing the natural beauty of the wood.

GREY COLLECTIONDespite being used for centuries, grey is the on trend colour for 2017. Its simplicity and timeless appeal mean it is a great colour to invest in. With such a spectrum of shades and tones it is perfect for every room in the home, or even commercial interiors where a more contemporary style is required.

FOREST COLLECTIONOur Forest Collection reflects bygone days, with gentle brown hues giving a worn look. Perfect for recreating classic period flooring in older properties, or for busy family homes, looking for practical colours.

BLACK COLLECTIONBlack has often been overlooked as a colour of the past, but with our new Black Collection it is very much making a resurgence. Green-blacks are complemented by robust inky hues to create a varied palette of colours which look striking in modern interiors whilst suiting traditional pub locations looking for traditional dark floors.

CONTEMPORARY COLLECTIONOur contemporary collection fuses together traditional oak flooring with ground-breaking colours, giving the ultimate modern finish. Dominated by contrasting colours, the contemporary look is softened by the natural grain of the oak. High-gloss and ultra-matt finishes provide scope for any interior from small bedrooms to large open plan living spaces.

WEATHERED COLLECTIONOur striking Weathered Collection is a unique range of finishes designed to recreate a weather-beaten effect on fresh oak. Perfect for creating a real wow-factor in residential or hospitality environments, where the rawness of its finish can be harnessed by carefully chosen furniture.

DISTRESSED COLLECTIONSometimes old is best and our distressed collection is designed to bring the warmth and charm of old floors to modern engineered oak. Every board in our distressed collection is hand finished to create a natural looking wood floor ensuring that no two boards are ever the same. The natural matt finish ensures the floor looks worn from the day it is installed.

Colour FinishesOur 2017 colour collections showcase a carefully developed palette of modern, clean whites, cool greys, and classic earthy browns to ensure there is a colour for every design.

Utilising the latest German oil technology, all our coloured floors can be laid and used straight away or for high use areas, a coat of oil can be applied and left to dry.

For clients looking to match an existing floor colour, or for designers who wish to develop their own unique finish, we offer a bespoke colour service where we can produce virtually any colour.

Inbetween | Engineered Oak Flooring

ChevronChevron is a great modern alternative to traditional herringbone. Chevron is similar to herringbone but the points meet at 45 degrees rather than 90 degrees, resulting in a strip effect. Our European oak chevron blocks are supplied with a tongue and groove on the long sides and a loose tongue on the ends. Our chevron blocks are available in a choice of two grades.

Our Inbetween range of engineered flooring is manufactured by Berthold Germany, using the finest sustainably sourced European oak bonded to high quality Finnish or Russian birch plywood.

Care & M

aintenanceCARE & MAINTENANCE

Initial Floor Care

Bespoke Coloured FloorsOur bespoke coloured floors are supplied fully finished with a clear top coat of industrial Saicos Hardwax Oil and can be used immediately after installation. In high wear areas or in kitchens and bathrooms it is important that an additional coat of Saicos Premium Hardwax Oil is applied over the floor after installation to seal the joints and prevent the ingress of water. Our bespoke coloured floors (unless otherwise specified) are supplied with a matt finish, if a different sheen level is required a coat of oil can be applied on site to achieve the desired result.

Natural Oiled FloorsOur natural oiled floors are supplied pre-finished with two coats of an open pore natural oil, which penetrates and hardens deep inside the pores of the wood. This finish requires a final coat of Saicos Professional Hardwax Oil to be applied as part of the installation process to ensure long lasting resistance to dirt, dust and spills.

How to use Saicos Premium Hardwax Oil

Immediately after installation our natural oiled floors should be given a final coat of Saicos Professional Hardwax Oil to ensure long lasting resistance t0 dirt, dust and spills.

Our bespoke coloured floors are supplied fully finished and can be used directly after installation, however in high wear areas or in kitchens and bathroom it is important that an additional coat of Saicos Premium Hardwax Oil is applied over the floor after installation. This will seal the joints and prevent the ingress of water.

All our floors (unless otherwise specified) are supplied with a matt finish, if a different sheen level is required a coat of oil can be applied on site to achieve the desired result. 1. Vacuum the floor thoroughly to remove loose dust and dirt. If the

floor is dirty, wash the floor thoroughly with Saicos Ecoline Magic Cleaner and allow the floor to dry before proceeding

2. Stir the oil thoroughly and pour into a paint tray – do not thin or pour directly onto the surface of the floor

3. Apply a thin even coat of oil to the floor working in the direction of the grain using a Saicos Oil/Wax Roller and a paint brush for the edges

4. Work towards the entrance of the room, making sure any lines or overly wet area are rolled out leaving a uniform wet surface

5. The floor can now be left to dry, which normally takes approx. 5 hours @ 20°C

IMPORTANT:

Applying the oil using the roller will leave a lightly textured surface – this is by design and provides a more durable longer lasting surface. If you prefer a smoother finish, work in small areas (less than 5m2) rolling the oil onto the floor and then immediately ragging off the excess oil. Continue stepwise until the floor is completely oiled. This method may require a second coat of oil to provide additional protection.

Oiled floors are not fully hardened until 3-5 days after oiling, dependent upon the air temperature and humidity. During this time the floor should not be exposed to water or high traffic.

For deeper penetration of oil a polishing/buffing machine (with a white pad) may be used to work the oil into the floor. This will help to extend the time between re-oiling. Most professional wood floor installers will use a polishing machine as part of their professional process. If you require instructions for use with a buffing machine – please contact us for details.

Care & M

CARE & MAINTENANCE

Regular Cleaning Care & M

aintenance

Daily/Weekly CleaningWe recommend that your wooden floor is cleaned regularly with Saicos Wash Care, which will remove dust and dirt but also, due to its nourishing properties, will quickly close the pores of the wood helping to protect against stains and the penetration of liquids.

How to use Saicos Wash Care

1. Vacuum the floor thoroughly to remove loose dust and dirt

2. Shake the bottle and dilute 2 cap fullf of Wash Care into 5 litres of warm water in a bucket. Fill a separate bucket with warm water

3. Apply the cleaning solution with a Saicos or cotton mop in the direction of the grain keeping the floor damp but not saturated

4. Regularly clean the dirty mop in the clean water to ensure dirty cleaning solution isn’t reapplied to the floor

5. Leave the floor to dry for approx. one hour before use

Bi-Annual CleaningAlongside cleaning your wooden floor with Saicos Wash Care, we recommend refreshing your wooden floor with Saicos Wax Care particularly in high wear areas such as kitchens, walkways, doorways and underneath tables etc. Saicos Wax Care will also remove stubborn marks, water marks and marks from rubber soles. How to use Saicos Wax Care

1 Vacuum the floor thoroughly to remove loose dust and dirt

2. Shake the bottle and apply with a cloth rubbing into the surface of the wood

3. Leave to dry and buff with a cloth

CARE & MAINTENANCE

Periodic Maintenance

Re-oiling your floor using our recommend finishing products will help to strengthen and stimulate the natural qualities of the wood, ensuring a hard-wearing, dirt and water repellent surface. The maintenance schedule for re-oiling will vary depending upon use, cleaning routine, exposure to sunlight, heat etc.. Areas which are subjected to greater wear than the rest of the floor can be locally re-oiled – the more frequently the floor is re-oiled, the more durable the floor will be. Prior to re-oiling we recommend cleaning the floor with Saicos Magic Cleaner.

After cleaning the floor with Saicos Magic Cleaner, Saicos Premium Hardwax Oil can be used directly on top of previously oiled surfaces as per the initial care instructions on page 68. If the surface is grey or badly worn, the floor should be sanded to a 120 grit before continuing.

How to use Saicos Magic Cleaner

1 Vacuum the floor thoroughly to remove loose dust and dirt

2. Shake the bottle and dilute 500ml into 5 litres of warm water

3. Apply the cleaning solution to the floor in the direction of the grain keeping the floor damp but not saturated

4. Leave the cleaning solution for 5-20 minutes to dissolve the dirt

5. The floor must now be rinsed using a clean mop and clean warm water 3 times to remove the dirt and soap residue.

6. Allow the floor to dry thoroughly before oiling the floor

This procedure can be repeated for particularly dirty floors or stubborn marks.

5. Indentations from high heeled shoes A high heeled shoe can concentrate as much as 2,000 pounds per square

inch on a floor. Therefore, walking on any wood surface in high heeled shoes is considered abusive and any damage to our floors as a result is not covered by our warranty.

6. Normal Environmental Conditions Our products are warranted to perform in normal residential environments.

Floors should only be installed in rooms where the room is kept temperate (minimum 15°C) and that relative humidity remains between 30% and 60% both during and after installation.

7. Normal Variances The patterns and colour variations created in a living tree are like all

So remember your newly installed floor will vary from samples or pictures shown. Therefore, no warranty shall apply thereto. All wood flooring will undergo colour changes due to the effects of ultraviolet rays from the sun and these changes are not covered by our warranty.

8. Alterations & Repairs Alterations to any Beach Bros product will void any and all expressed

or implied warranties including merchantability or fitness for particular purpose. No warranty is provided to cover repairs or resurfacing and repairs or replacement (even if by Beach Bros) shall not extend warranty period. Wood is a natural product therefore we cannot guarantee a match to existing stained or natural coloured floors.

9. Reinstallation If Beach Bros is obligated or elects to replace or reinstall warranted

boards, Beach Bros shall in no manner be obligated to provide for or incur costs of removing or reinstalling the defective flooring or resurfacing or refinishing the replaced or surrounding flooring or to provide for the cost thereof unless and to the extent expressly provided in the warranty description above.

No obligation to replace or repair shall extend to any subfloor materials,

adhesives, supplier or other items encountered in the course of removal, installation or refinishing.

10. Your Obligation to Beach Bros As the purchaser of our product you agree to follow all directions in

the care and maintenance instructions (available www.beachbros.co.uk). You also agree to allow Beach Bros a reasonable number of attempts to correct any claimed defect.

This warranty only applies to Beach Bros Berthold Inbetween pre-finished engineered hardwood flooring and covers only such products purchased and manufactured after 1st July 2016. The warranty is not transferrable and is extended only to the original consumer purchaser and for the original installations. All warranties expire upon sale, transfer or relocation of the installed product or installation location. LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY

The above statement of warranty is the only warranty provided by Beach Bros residential multilayer flooring products for residential applications involving light to normal traffic conditions. No products in rental, industrial or commercial applications.

All claims must be made in writing and sufficiently documented (photos, etc). Please note, however, that in order to make any claim under this warranty, evidence of the purchase date and the identity of the original purchaser and installation location must be provided and without such proof, no warranty coverage will apply.
