And some argue that wood harvested from a managed resource can be better for the environment than manufacturing a composite material. John Farris, who handles special orders in building supplies at Bruce Bauer, figures he’s seen “over 500 customers replace their decks with TimberTech in just the last six months.” Made of reclaimed wood fibers and plastic resins, the product comes with a 25-year residential warranty, and “looks like wood, you just wash it and it retains its colors after five or six years,” he said. Farris said Trex has been the leading manufacturer of composite decking for about 20 years, but now it’s one of many composite products his company carries. He claims CrossTimber, for example, is a little stronger and cheaper, going for $3.18 per linear foot. “The only people I see come in for wood decking are older couples,” he said. “Younger people want to try the new materials.” The demand still exists for redwood however, which is why Bruce Bauer car- ries two high grades of dried redwood: Heart B and All Clear Heart, which retail for about $4.50 per linear foot. Redwood, like cedar and pine, is a softwood. Farris describes redwood heart as “softer, and it doesn’t pick up a lot of moisture,” which helps slow down rotting and ward off insect damage, so the wood reaches a potential lifespan of 20-plus years. A clear winner in the long-lasting wood category is ipe (pronounced ee-pay), an ironwood grown in Central and South America that the company sells in 1-foot by 6-inch lengths for $3.49 a foot. Wood vs. plasticBy Kate Daly

For generations, family-owned Bruce Bauer Lumber & Supply in Moun-tain View has specialized in wood

products. But to keep competitive, the business has now evolved into selling plastics, too. These days, composite materials — made up of a combination of wood and plastic — are big sellers when it comes to building new decks or fences, because the end result can last longer and cause fewer maintenance headaches. Yet not all composites are ecologically equal, with some made of virgin plastic and others from recycled materials. Mike Goines at Empire Lumber in Bel-mont estimates that ipe can last for up to 50 years. “It’s very dense, you have to pre-drill it, and it weathers gray,” he said. One of his clients, Pat del Gavio, heads up a design firm in Woodside called Del Gavio Group. asking specifically for green products, but that one label to look for is FSC-certified. The Forest Stewardship Council keeps track of trees that are harvested in a respon-sible manner so that they’re replenished. In general, Goines suggests using a clear oil finish every couple of years to preserve outdoor wood prod-ucts. Wood that is meant to have ground contact, such as deck posts, is pressure treated with non-tox-ic chemicals to make it extra resistant to moisture and insects. Arsenic, he said, is a thing of the past.

Mixed review for composites Composite materials are often touted as being eco-friendly because they don’t con-tain harmful chemicals and don’t require preservatives or harsh cleansers after instal-lation. Most composite materials simply need to be rinsed off with a garden hose. Goines agrees that the composites may be low maintenance, but points out “the plastic you find in them will still be in the landfill 100 years down the line.” His comment is somewhat at odds with

Trex’s claim of being “environmental-friendly.” The company’s Web site states that Trex decking is “primarily made with recycled plastic grocery bags, reclaimed pallet wrap and waste wood.” The site also

claims Trex decks are in more than a mil-lion homes across the country. Sara Jamison, who works in the home department at Sunset magazine, said Trex is a sponsor of the company’s Idea Houses, and the Sun-set Summer Retreat Home that was just built in Menlo Park. With Trex decks, she notes, “You

don’t have to cut down a redwood tree,” Also, “they last forever.” Lately the magazine has been carry-ing several full-page ads each month for composite decking. A recent ad features Home Depot’s in-house brand, Veranda, which is said to be made from “premium recycled wood and polymer resins.” Veranda, as well as competitors’ prod-ucts such as Trex, Eon and EverGrain, sells for anywhere from $3.64 to $4.50 per linear foot. tions, are just beginning to be understood. The additional heat caused the air condi-tioners to use more energy. In fact, an extra four degrees Fahrenheit of ambient outside temperature in Tokyo alone means an addi-tional 1.6 gigahertz of power is expended to run the air conditioners. It is a vicious cycle. To put 1.6 gigahertz into perspective, the largest power plant in California, Duke Energy plant at Morrow Bay, produces 1.2 gigahertz of power. In other words, it takes almost one and a half extra power plants just to cover the energy required to cool Tokyo’s buildings the four degrees caused by air con-ditioners in the first place. This energy, 1.6 gigahertz, is enough power to run 1.2 million households in the Bay Area. Why do we care about Japan? Well, air conditioners in Japan are not much different from the ones we have here. The U.S. uses more electricity than any other country in the world. The average U.S. household uses 2.4 times the energy of a Japanese household. In temperate climates like the Bay Area’s, air conditioners were rarely installed until recent decades. They are fast becoming ubiquitous. According to the California Energy Commission, air conditioners use approximately one third of the state’s total electrical demand on hot days, 16 gigahertz of electricity — the amount of power pro-

duced by 15 large power plants. Air conditioning is also changing where we live. The availability of air conditioning has added more housing in the hottest parts of the state, most notably in the scorching Central Valley. Most of this extra energy is being pro-duced by coal and natural gas power plants, both prodigious producers of greenhouse gasses. If your head is beginning to spin, it may be because you’re jumping ahead and completing the circle: Greenhouse gasses add to global warming. Global warming increases air conditioner and therefore electricity use. There is one wonderful way to stop this vicious cycle: stop using air conditioning. Today we can design green homes that cost the same as traditional homes but pro-vide amazingly comfortable natural cooling without the use of air conditioning. Even if you don’t live in a fancy new green home, you can you can apply many natural cooling principles in your existing house. The use of generally lighter-colored materials for roofing, exterior paint and

paving surfaces will cool your environ-ment. The greater solar reflectivity a material has (also known as its “albedo”), the better it diverts heat away from your home. Absorption of solar radiation by dark materials has been shown to raise temperatures in cities across America in a process called the heat island effect. Vegetation also provides cooling though a process called evapotranspiration. This is a fancy name for the water that evaporates from plants through the pores in their leaves. The water draws heat as it evaporates, and cools the surrounding air in the process. A single mature, properly watered tree with a crown of 30 feet can evapotranspire up to 40 gallons of water a day. This is equivalent to removing all the heat produced in four hours by an electric space heater. You can also use whole-house fans in your attic to circulate cool air into your home in the cool morning and evening hours. If you keep your house closed in the midday, usually the cool air introduced during the night can keep a home cool all day. If you don’t have a whole-house fan, window fans

or swamp coolers will also do the trick. Most people find naturally cooled air to be more comfortable. In fact, studies have shown that people feel comfortable across a wider range of temperatures when exposed to natural, non-conditioned air. Keep cool this summer, the natural way. V
