SCOOP YOUR PET’S POOPPlease remember to be respectful of your neighbors’ yards and the community grounds. When you take your pet for a walk, come prepared with a scooper and a recycled grocery bag or anything else. If your pet poops during your walk, pleasescoop and trash. It may not be the most fabulous way to walk your pet, but it does show that you respect your fellow neighbors’ and our beautiful community.

KATY ANIMAL CONTROL Katy Animal Control works in conjunction with the Katy Police Department enforcing City and State laws. Lost pets are kept in a 3,000 sq. ft. temperature controlled, state-inspected building.
The Katy Animal Shelter does not adopt out animals, therefore, it is extremely important that pets are licensed and vaccinated at six months of age. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM and can be reached at 281-391-4740 (all calls are logged and returned, so please leave a message). For after hour emergen-cies, please call the Katy Police Department at 281-391-4848. It is unlawful to dump animals at the shelter.
Dogs and/or cats are not allowed to run at large on private property and must wear collar and tags at all times.

VFW VOICE OF DEMOCRACY A NATIONAL ESSAY COMPETITION
The Voice of Democracy essay is a National Competition created in 1947 to allow high school students in grades 9-12 to voice their opinion on their responsibility to our nation. The theme for 2012 is: “Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?” Students from public, private and parochial high schools and home schooled students, in the U.S. and in American high schools overseas may enter. The oral presentation must be not less than 3 minutes and no more than 5 minutes in length, spoken in English and recorded on the media specified on the application form, with no background noise or enhancements. The essay cannot contain the student’s name, city, state, grade level or refer to their nationality. Entries must be received no later than midnight Nov. 1, 2012. Deliver to VFW #8905, 21902 Hempstead Hwy., Cypress, TX, 77429 (next to Carl’s BBQ) or mail to: VFW #8905, POB 2, Cypress, TX, 77410-0002. The winning VFW Post #8905 entry will then compete for the VFW District 4 Scholarship and that winner competes for the VFW Department of Texas Scholarship. The State winner receives an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in March of 2013 to compete for a $40,000 VFW National scholarship that is paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school.
PATRIOT’S PENConducted Nationwide, this VFW sponsored youth essay competition gives 6th, 7th and 8th graders an opportunity to write 300-400 word es-says expressing their views on democracy with the prospect of awards for future educational endeavors. We invite you to join the more than 120,000 students who participated last year in this contest. You may access specific instructions by going to the VFW Website: VFW.ORG, choosing programs, then scholarships, then Patriot’s Pen. The 2012 theme is “What Would I Tell America’s Founding Fathers?” Entries must be submitted no later than midnight Nov. 1, 2012. “We are thrilled to announce the development of Houston’s Hot Sum-
mer Break,” said Skip Wagner, president of the Houston Livestock
Show and Rodeo. “Houstonians love to celebrate and this festival
offers them a really cool way to do so. We look forward to making
it one of the best and most successful events of its kind, offering
attendees the ability to get away without going away!”
Another highlight of the event, a restaurant-style café, will allow
attendees the opportunity to sit and enjoy creations from several
Houston-area restaurants, cafés and diners, including a wine bar
and coffee shop.
Net proceeds generated from Houston’s Hot Summer Break will di-
rectly benefit the mission of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a Section 501(c)(3) char-
ity that benefits youth, supports education, and facilitates better
agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentation. Since
its beginning in 1932, the Show has committed approximately $283

TOOLS 4 TEENS
SUMMER CAMP 2012
REAL LIFE * REAL ANSWERS
June 11th - 14th
July 9th - 12th
Time: 10 AM-noonLocation: The Fellowship at Cinco Ranch Church 22765 Westheimer Parkway, Katy, Community RoomClass Size: 12
Tools 4 Teens Program Description: This program is designed for boys and girls, 12-18 years of age. Each session identifies key issues facing teens today, coupled with problem-solving, healthy decision-making and positive goal-setting. Each student will be given a clear message of hope and personal value. With this knowledge, it is our mission to empower students with the understanding that positive choices have positive consequences and poor choices have consequences that can have a life-changing impact.
Set on a Christian foundation, the Tools 4 Teens program teaches life-skills and character education. Within this interactive program students will learn information on current issues such as Peer Pres-sure, Substance Use and Their Consequences, Healthy Relationships, Anger/Forgiveness, Self-Worth, Respect for Others, Sexual Purity and Internet Safety. Testimonials will be shared by special guest speakers who have made good choices and poor choices in these critical areas.
The Tools 4 Teens program includes small group discussions and fine arts. Through our scrapbooking activity students create a book showcasing pictures of themselves, family and friends. Students are prompted to set positive goals and journal within their scrapbooks. This fine arts activity promotes positive self-reflection and serves as a keepsake students reflect on through teen years.
Cost: $215. *Includes all scrapbooking materials, personalized Tools 4 Teens book, autographed copy of Addict at 10, treasure box with “diamond”, journal, disk of all professional quality photos taken of your teen during camp plus eight hours of Christian-based instruction.

LIBRARIES ANNOUNCE SUMMER READING CLUBS FOR ADULTS, TEENS AND CHILDREN
Registration for the 2012 Summer Reading Clubs will began on May 29th and continues through July 28th, at all Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) locations.
There will be drawings, awards and prizes in the various clubs, please see our website for details on each. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library or they may register online by going to the FBCL website (www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) starting May 29th. There is no charge to join the Summer Reading Clubs and they are open to people in the appropriate age group, regardless of the county of residence. The program is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends organizations that support the county library system. For more information, call the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677 or the library branch nearest you.
FORT BEND COUNTY LIBRARIES GO GREEN, SAVE MONEY
Fort Bend County Libraries is saving county taxpayers’ money by using email and telephone notifications rather than mailing out letters. Pa-trons may receive notices by email, telephone or text message about books they have requested or that are overdue. By sending out notices electronically, the library saves money on the costs of paper, printing and postage, which helps preserve the environment as well.
Library patrons can manage their online library account by click-ing on “My Account” on the library’s webpage. To verify or add a telephone or email account to the record, simply go to “Contact Information and Preferences,” then “Preference for receiving library notices” and select “email address,” “telephone” or “TXT messag-ing” from the drop-down list to choose the format by which library information notices should be received. Patrons who opt to receive text messages will need to ensure that their cell phone number is in-cluded on their library record and indicate which cell phone provider they use by selecting a choice from the drop-down menu. Standard text-messaging rates apply, based on the patron’s cell-phone plan.
Patrons who do not already have an email address may sign up for a free email account at www.google.com (Gmail), www.yahoo.com (Yahoo mail) or www.msn.com (Hotmail). Librarians are available to help set up an email account if needed or patrons may attend one of the libraries’ free classes on getting started with email. The libraries’ computers are available for patrons to check their email anytime. Fort Bend County Libraries does not sell or give patrons’ email addresses to other parties.
