Woodford Green Primary School
Friday 8th May 2020
Dear Children of Woodford Green Primary
Today is VE day. Victory in Europe day. On this day, in the UK in 1945,
more than 1 million people celebrated in the streets of our cities, towns
and villages. People were celebrating the end of a very difficult time, a
time when they had to stay in their homes and air raid shelters to keep
safe. It was also a time when people helped each other tremendously.
When Londoners heard that peace in Europe had been declared, crowds
came out onto the streets and flooded into central London. London land-
marks such as Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus
became a focus for celebrations.
World War II is often seen as a time of great community spirit. Londoners
were seen as calm in the face of danger,
sharing a positive spirit, courage and a de-
termination to succeed.
We are living in a time when we are see-
ing this great community spirit and where
we are seeing how calm and determined
people are to overcome this current crisis.
You are all playing your part, showing us your positive spirit and your
courage. Thank you for continuing to work hard and for helping your
parents in this time.
As Winston Churchill said: “My dear friends, this is your hour.
This is not victory of a party or of any class. It’s a victory of the
great British nation as a whole.”
Dear Parents and Carers
On Monday 11th May 2020, we will be sending you a letter
that will detail our launch of Google classroom. This online
platform helps teachers and pupils to communicate and can
be utilised to organise and manage work. The programme
also allows teachers to teach from a distance, which in the
current climate can provide much needed assistance.
We will continue to upload home learning activities via
email and the school website whilst we launch Google Class-
room. If you have any questions regarding home learning or
Google classroom, please contact the class teachers.
Writing Challenge
All children of Woodford Green
We are living through some unique and in-
teresting times at the moment. How are you
experiencing this time? Can you share some
of your thoughts and feelings in writing?
This could be in the form of:
A story about life in lockdown
A poem about the times we are facing and
how we can cope
A daily diary of your experiences, thoughts and feelings
A practical guide of how communities and families can help
one another in this time
All the teachers and I would love to read what you have written
and publish it in the weekly newsletter!
Please email your teacher with your ideas, they will be able to
support with your writing. Send them drafts and/or questions;
they will provide feedback and suggestions.
Lockdown Writing—Reception and Y6
Please send us in your book reviews, poems, stories which your
friends will be able to read.
Look at all the fantastic contributions
from Reception children! On the next
page we feature a brilliant newspaper
article from Lenny in Y6. Superb efforts
from you all. We look forward to fea-
turing more of your work next week.
Please do send your writing to your
teachers.
One of the best things to come out of the Corona Virus Crisis..
CAPTAIN TOM, A TRUE HERO.
A war veteran who raised millions for the NHS has been sent more than 25,000 birthday
cards.
Captain Tom Moore, recently turned 100 years of age, has completed one hundred laps of his
garden in celebration of reaching the grand age of 100! He thoughtfully decided to challenge
himself so he could raise money for the brave NHS workers who are holding the whole
situation of the COVID-19 outbreak together to save many lives.
The hard-working man raised over 30 million pounds for this amazing cause.
HOW CAPTAIN TOM MOORE CAPTURED
OUR HEARTS.
Alongside the donations, Captain Tom has inspired the whole country with his good deed and
determination.
His daughter called him ‘a beacon of hope in dark times’
The country all watched captain Tom celebrated his birthday in style, enjoying the fly by in
inspiration and with a warm heart. Captain Tom has set a very good example to everybody
that we can all do something great in these worrying times.
