Term 3 Week 4

ELC EDUCATION WEEK CONCERT

Our annual Erina Learning Community (ELC) Education Week concert was held last week in the Hive at Erina Fair. The Infants and Senior Dance Groups, the band and the choir all performed beautifully. Congratulations to Sofia and Callum on the fabulous job they did as comperes. Thank you to the community and parents who attended and cheered on our students. It was a great opportunity for the schools in the Erina Learning community to showcase the wonderful talent in our public schools.

THANK YOU

Thank you to Brian Hilton Toyota for donat-ing a variety of shrubs, shirts and gloves for National Tree Day. Our gardening students have enjoyed planting them.

SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAY (SDD)

Families would be aware that each term schools have specific days set aside for teachers to attend professional development. These days are usually at the beginning or end of the term. As mentioned in previous newsletters, this year the staff decided to have extra ‘half days’ where we stay back on four evenings until 6:30pm in place of having them at the end of the year.

S A F E R E S P E C T F U L L E A R N E R

The third of these evenings will be held on Monday 21st August. At

this meeting the staff will engage in professional learning on incorporating critical and creative thinking skills

across the curriculum to prepare our students for the future workplace and their adult lives. Teachers will be

learning how to facilitate teaching in the valuable skills of evaluating knowledge, clarifying concepts,

analysing ideas, seeking possibilities, considering alternatives and solving problems. Increasingly, students

will be required to approach issues deeply from a number of perspectives, using skills and behaviours such

as reasoning, logic, resourcefulness, imagination and innovation in all learning areas and in their lives

beyond school. We look forward to building creative capacity in both our teachers and students.

TELL THEM FROM ME STUDENT FEEDBACK SURVEY

I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey for students in Years 4-6. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. You may remember that our Year 4-6 students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school.

I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 21 August and 13 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

A consent form and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students today. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form

to school by Thursday 17 August. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from the website above.

STUDENTS LEAVING

As we move into our planning phase for 2018, if you have a student at Woodport who is NOT in Year 6 and will not be returning to us next year, would you please let us know. The number of students at our school affects the planning for classes, teachers and school programs so the earlier we have information, the better. Please write a note to your child’s teacher or drop it into the office.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Congratulations to our students who sat for entry into a Selective High School for 2018. Hedy has been offered a place at Gosford Selective High School and Evie and Samantha are on the waiting list. This is a tremendous achievement as these places are highly competitive. Well done girls we are very proud of you!

WHAT I LIKE ABOUT MY SCHOOL…..

All children were asked what they liked about their school. Each fortnight we will share some of their responses.

What I like about school is how everyone including the teachers are very helpful and friendly. If you have a problem they will give you their full attention to solve that problem. Lauren 6W

What I like about school is seeing all my friends every day and playing with them. My best friend Zac is in my class and my football team. Diesel 3K

I like getting Ernies at school and doing Maths because I’m learning the time. I enjoy making new friends and having fun in the playground. Daniella 1/2R

What I like about school is learning new things and playing soccer with my friends. At school we have rules like don’t go past the blue lines, hands and feet to yourself, walk on the concrete and no tripping or slide tackling when playing soccer. We have these rules to keep us safe. Aiden 2P

I like Maths because of the multiplication and addition that I’m doing and I enjoy English because it allows you to be creative. Madison 3K

VOLUNTEER DRAW

The June volunteer draw took place on the last day of term with Heidi Mullen, being the lucky recipient of the $20 gift card for Erina Leagues Club. The next draw will take place on Friday 25th August. All you need to do to be eligible for the draw is to write your name in the book of entries at the front desk when you sign in as a volunteer. We thank Erina Leagues Club for supporting the school and our volunteers. We really appreciate their support.

A.E.C.G MEETING

Our next A.E.C.G. meeting will be held at Holy Cross Catholic School Kincumber on Wednesday 16th August, in the library with 5.00pm start for our Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander community only and 5.30pm for other interested members of the community.

EFFORT BRINGS SUCCESS CERTIFICATES Effort Brings Success (EBS) Certificates are an important part of Woodport’s recognition of students’ effort and excellence. To receive an EBS certificate, students need to return three merit certificates. Students need four “Effort Brings Success” (EBS) certificates to earn their plaque. During fourth term a special assembly will be held to recognise those who have earned a plaque. So please ensure you store merit and EBS certificates away in a safe place so we don’t have any disappointed students.

WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN

The school is collecting Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers, so just by shopping at Woolies, you can help the school earn some great rewards. Simply collect your stickers when doing your weekly shop and have your child pop them in the box outside 1M (classroom closest to the canteen). Please note that you do not need to put the stickers on a sheet.

There are over 10,000 educational resources that the school can choose from at the end of the program, including arts and craft resources, Mathematics, English and Science equipment. This is a great opportunity to help the school obtain brand new equipment at no additional cost. The more we collect the more we earn! Any questions, please contact Mrs Moore.

CREATIVE ARTS & GIFTED & TALENTED CAMPS

The annual Central Coast Hunter Creative Arts Camp and the Central Coast Gifted and Talented Camp are both being held in September at Sport and Recreation Centres on the Central Coast. Both four-day camps offer workshops in a variety of areas with a view to enrich children in a like-minded environment. Woodport has four students who have been accepted.

Lily M - Drama,

Victoria V - Drama

Harrison W - Dance

Lachlan S – Sports Science

Well done to all students. We look forward to hearing about your experiences after the camp.

CENTRAL COAST PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

On Thursday 10th August, selected students from each stage will be attending Gosford Public School to compete in this year’s Central Coast Public Speaking Competition. Other schools competing in our area include Narara, Lisarow, Valley View, Gosford, Chertsey, Niagara Park, Holgate and Kincumber Public Schools. Students are required to write their own speech on a topic of interest and present it to the best of their abilities. Scores are given based on standard adjudication criteria including: creativity/originality of introduction, content, method - sustained audience engagement (humour, audience response), presentation (enthusiasm, stance, spontaneity and naturalness of gestures, NO PROPS), and creativity/originality of conclusion.

S A F E R E S P E C T F U L L E A R N E R

Speeches are also timed and required to be within the given limits, or else points are again deducted. This year there will be a finals round to be held at Warnervale Public School on Thursday 17th August. Students who are successful in their first round attempts will be notified of their requirement to attend. We wish the following students the best of luck with their upcoming speeches:

ES1 – Charlize W and Piper K

Stage 1 – Jessica H and Toby F

Stage 2 – Mirrin M and Emmison F

Stage 3 – Oliver L and Tori V

PERFORMING ARTS NIGHT Our annual Performing Arts Night, involving all students from K-6 will be held on Tuesday 29th August in the Erina High School Hall. Teachers and students are busy rehearsing and fine-tuning performances for the night. This is a great opportunity to showcase the many talents of our students and celebrate their achievements and the hard work of our teachers. This is also a time for ALL students to shine, enjoying the thrill of performing and the great feeling of success.

There will be two concerts, one during the day for a rehearsal (this performance is only for students) and the other at night for family and community members. The cost will be $5 per adult and $1 per child (sibling over 5 years of age), which will be paid at the door. Students in either the Infants, Junior or Senior Dance Groups will be required to arrive at 5pm; all other students will be required to arrive at 5:30pm. Doors open at 5:40pm for a 6pm start. The show is expected to finish at approximately 7:30pm. A more detailed note outlining what children are to wear will be sent home soon.

BOOK WEEK 2017

Our Book Week day will be held on Friday 18th August. This year’s theme for Book Week is ‘Escape to Everywhere’. Basically, the idea is that books can take us anywhere. Discussions have taken place in class about possible costume ideas and the list is endless. Many students wishing to dress as a book character related to travel and adventure, such as Tin Tin, Harry Potter, Pokémon, Alice in Wonderland, Wally, Dora the Explorer or Captain Underpants. Others prefer a broader approach and look to characters or people who ‘escape’ to everywhere, including Santa, pirates, superheroes, animals or minions. Students are to come to school dressed in their costume.

The day will be filled with fun activities including the following:

8:25 am – 8:55 am Scholastic Book Fair in the library for PARENTS ONLY

8:25 am – 8:55 am BBQ near the canteen

9:10 am – 10:00 am Parade and Teacher’s skit (parents/carers welcome)

At various times throughout the day, students will attend the Book Fair with their class.

They will preview available books in the library during the week prior and will have the opportunity to purchase books on the day of Book Week. Students will also attend a Jollybops Science Show as Book Week also coincides with National Science Week. We were fortunate to have Jollybops visit Woodport PS last year and they were amazing! This year they bring with them two new shows for students. Remember to return the permission note with payment so your child doesn’t miss the show.

To conclude the day, students will attend a short assembly to announce this year’s CBCA Book Winner and also discover who is awarded the 2017 Year 6 Picture Book Winner. We look forward to an amazing day of exciting events!

Stage 3 student leaders are “making a difference” promoting positive behaviour in our school and encouraging their peers to be SAFE RESPECTFUL LEARNERS.

ATHLETICS UPDATE

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Athletics Carnival a success! It was a great day and the weather was what we ordered. Your understanding in track changes and seating on the day was appreciated and we look forward to the improvements being made to grandstand seating ready for next year!

The day was a success on many levels – we saw so many students having a go and trying their best, as well as some great examples of sportsmanship and athleticism. Two records were again broken this year, both in the 100m age races. Charlotte S broke the 100m 8 years girls record that stood for the past 9 years by almost 1 second. Sofia R broke the 100m 13 years girls record that stood for the past 23 years by almost 1 second also.

Brilliant effort girls!!

Our senior students awarding Ernies at lunch times appreciating students for adopting our PBL expectations and giving reminders when

needed.

House Captains are working hard every lunch to organise the sport shed and ensure that students have access to equipment dur-

ing break times.

The 1500m event for boys and girls in the 10, 11 and 12 years categories was a late entry to this year’s zone calendar. We therefore had to run this race at school after our school carnival. Students selected to attend the Zone carnival will do so on Monday 21st August at Mingara. The following students have qualified for Zone:

Reuben H, Cooper S, Levi P, Matthew F, Ashton B, Owen N, Jonah T, Lewis G-C, Sonny D, Beau T, James F, Dylan C, Jacob W, Brendan K, Evan C, Bradley W, Morgan C, Lukas H, Kai D, Joshua H, Jordan B, Lachlan M, Ollie F, Andrew M, Riley H, Charlotte S, Isabella H, Ivy S, Ciarn S, Estelle B, Addison B, Lily F, Arabella P, Zoe S, Audrey C, Sienna P, Evie P, Lilly M, Zoe D, Sofia R, Bronte M, Lucinda W, Ebony N, Tilly W, Luisa E, Leila H, Chloe T, Tori V, Ella C.

Following the Zone Carnival, any eligible students invited to attend the Sydney North Carnival will do so

on Monday 4th September at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush.

Once all athletics events have been finalised, we will be holding our Years 3-6 Athletics Presentation of carnival ribbons, House trophy, Zone and Sydney North ribbons and Age Champion medals on the last Friday of term (22nd September). This assembly will take place in the school hall and begin at 2:05pm. Parents/carers are invited to attend.

CRICKET

The boys played their round 4 game against Niagara Park at Adcock Park last Thursday. Lachlan, our team captain, again won the toss and elected to bowl first for the third time this year. Roop and Lachlan opened the bowling. After 8 overs Roop got his first wicket and the score was one for 40. All our bowlers bowled extremely well, particularly our two ‘leggies’- Callum and Lewis who both took vital wickets and helped to slow down the run rate. After 25 overs Niagara Park posted a very competitive score of 3 for 104.

So, we needed to score 105 runs off 25 overs. The boys did not get off to the best start and after 3 overs were 3 out for 10 runs, so things were looking a bit grim. Roop and Jonah dug in and against some very good bowling were able to latch on to anything loose and hit the ball to the boundary. Between both boys they hit a total of 15 boundaries to put Woodport back on top. After Roop retired on 40 the boys had put on a partnership of 80. This was absolutely outstanding batting from both Roop and Jonah under so much pressure. Lewis came in and batted very confidently to hit the winning runs in the 19th over.

What an amazing game! Well done boys! Great sportsmanship was on display and they were a great credit to our school.

Thanks again to our wonderful parents for all their support. Looking forward to our next match.

TOUCH FOOTBALL GALA DAY

Year 6 students had a thoroughly enjoyable day playing touch football against other schools on the coast. Both teams won, lost and drew games, showed great sportsmanship and represented Woodport proudly. A big thank you to Carmen Fleming, Jill Fitzgerald, Mark Pearce and Dean Wildemann for assisting on the day.

Woodport Public School Band is currently accepting new band members. If your child is interested in learning Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Percussion or Bass Guitar, fill out an expression of interest, available at the office and we can either get started on an instrument of choice or do some trials to see which instrument will suit. Rowen McBride from Teaching Services Australia currently runs the program and will direct you in the right direction for an healthy and enjoyable musical journey.

As demonstrated at assembly on Monday, the trombone is a larger brass instrument that is unique in that it uses a slide to

change the pitch of the instrument. Being a lower instrument it often play bass lines in band music.

You Can Do It Program

Here at Woodport PS we have been teaching the ‘You can Do It’ (YCDI) Program for many years now.

The main purpose of the YCDI program is to develop young people’s social and emotional capabilities,

including the five foundations of confidence (academic and social), persistence, organisation, getting

along and emotional resilience. Every class throughout the school engages in set lessons that teach these

five foundations. This week we have included an outline of the skills being taught for ‘Persistence’ and

some practical tips for parents.

PERSISTENCE

Young children who are persistent keep on trying when things seem hard or not fun. They try hard to

complete tasks and activities at school and home and do their chores without always having to be

reminded. They seem to know that, to be successful, they sometimes have to work hard and not give up.

As well, children who are persistent believe that the harder they try, the better they get.

EXAMPLES OF PERSISTENT BEHAVIOUR IN YOUR CHILD

Cleans up after playing with an activity even though he/she doesn't want to.

Finishes a new puzzle even if he/she needs to ask for help.

Keeps trying when learning to write neatly even though it takes them longer to complete homework.

Tries to draw something that is hard and doesn't give up.

Does not get distracted when doing homework and look for excuses not to finish.

Does what he/she says he/she will do.

WAYS TO PRAISE YOUR CHILD FOR PERSISTENT BEHAVIOUR

"You really put a lot of work into that."

"You really tried hard. Doesn't that feel good."

"Good for you. You didn't give up."

"You found that hard, but you kept trying"

"Well done, you did that even though it was not easy or fun."

"The more you practise the better you become."

TALK TO YOUR CHILD ABOUT PERSISTENT THINKING

I CAN DO IT (when work is hard, I can do it)

GIVING EFFORT (The harder I try, the better I will get.) It won’t happen immediately but it will

happen.

WORKING TOUGH (to do the best I can, I sometimes have to do things that are not easy or fun.)

PRACTICAL THINGS YOU CAN DO TO DEVELOP PERSISTENCE IN YOUR CHILD

Provide your child with accurate feedback concerning the amount of effort he/she is expending and

how much effort and time is really needed to complete a task such as project or task

Discuss with your child repeatedly how his/her big efforts result in learning or success

Provide strong, immediate reinforcement for effort your child puts toward work that he/she finds hard

or boring (especially jobs around the home and homework)

Praise your child when he/she willingly does a task that is not fun without complaining

Catch your child doing something that requires effort, and praise him/her for trying hard

Praise your child for ongoing hard work.

The NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy

Some of you may have heard about the recent launch of the above strategy for all NSW school

canteens. Basically the strategy aims to support student health by providing access to healthy

food and drinks, to make the healthy choice, the easy choice. It is part of the NSW government’s

commitment to reduce childhood obesity (22% of children aged 5-16 years in NSW are

overweight or obese) and all canteens are required to be compliant by the end of 2019.

Over the next Two years we will adapt our menus accordingly, changes for this term are the

removal of Focus waters and bacon. Overall given the amount of homemade fresh produce on

our menu, we hopefully will have very little to adapt!

More information on the strategy can be found at www.healthyschoolcanteens.nsw.gov.au

Canteen Survey

Last month we issued a canteen survey and so far have had a great response, if you haven’t

completed it, there is still time as it closes this Friday 11th of August. It only takes 5 minutes and

is anonymous; only one survey per family is required. Please click on this link to access the

survey http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/3676859/Woodport-Canteen-Survey-T3-2017

We will issue the summary of your feedback and our action points next month within the

newsletter and on the Skoolbag app.

Meal Deals

Last week we offered a selection of pies and sausage rolls as a meal deal and had a great

response!

In week 8 we will be offering another meal deal on Thursday the 14th September, the offer will

consist of a choice of Roast chicken, beef and pulled pork rolls, choice of juice and an ice block

Waste Warriors!

Last Tuesday former prefect and WPS student (2012), Samantha Smith, hosted a community service project for the 2017 MaxPotential program with the students of 3K. The project included the students collecting litter in groups from the school oval and sorting them into rubbish and recycling bins whilst jamming along to fun music. The goal of this project was to measure the success of Woodport’s existing ‘war on waste’ program and to enhance the students’ understanding of the concept that simple tasks can not only be effective but also be fun.

3K displayed an excellent understanding of the differences between the two types of playground rubbish and each group managed to correctly sort the waste into the two bins. Samantha was amazed to see the class’ en-thusiasm to this activity and that there was hardly any rubbish on the playground to actual-ly pick up!

This project addressed the issue of waste throughout the community by creating healthy habits from a young age to understand that ‘success’ when dealing with waste is not just about the quantity of rubbish collected but how the quality of its disposal (e.g. rubbish vs recycling) is equally important to the environment as a whole.

Samantha encourages Woodport to undertake this activity on a regular basis as it has proven to be very successful. A display of her project (3K) will be presented at the Gosford RSL Club on Wed 16th August (3-5pm).
