The Sunnyside Chamber ofCommerce invites all to the, asthey put it, “the oldest and mostcharming” continuous lighting cer-emony in Sunnyside-Woodsidestarting at 6PM at Sabba Park at48th Street and Queens Boulevard.

Sabba Park is named after oneof our small town in the big city’s“founding father” Joe Sabba andhis son Buster Sabba, andWoodside Herald’s third genera-tion editor, Sherilyn Sabba willattend with deserved pride.

The yearly lighting hasbeen a tradition in Sunnysidefrom mid-century forward. This year will be the best light-ing in years, with snowflakes, and a chorale group of localsingers who have been rehears-ing for weeks, AcapellaQ.

Father Joseph Jerome of All

Saints Church will bless the fami-lies-are-welcome gathering. Amoment of silence will be heldfor Luke Adams, always the com-munity member in recent timeswhose enthusiasm powered theprogram. A past chamber presi-dent Ira Greenberg tells a storythat he was once four minuteslate to the program he was sup-posed to lead, and Luke had al-ready lit the tree, saying “sorry,Ira, you’re late.”

1,000 lbs. OfFood Delivered

Across the country, including here inNew York City, service members and theirfamilies increasingly lack access to afford-able, nutritious food. As a result, many haveturned to food pantries and soup kitchens.

In an effort to help address the seriousneed this year Council Member VanBramer’s office has once again initiated hisannual food drive. In an effort to assist NewYork City’s brave men and women we willbe collecting food for veterans and theirfamilies. We can use your help. According

to recent reports, close to 30 percent of ourCity’s veterans and their families rely onemergency food to get by. From now untilDecember 12th we will be collecting non-perishable food items at our district office,47-01 Queens Boulevard, Suite 205,Sunnyside, as well as participating QueensLibrary branches within the district.

Photo Front: CM Van Bramer isjoined by Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and CM Ulrich and Levin asthey announce the delivery of over1,000 pounds of non-perishable fooditems at the Borden Avenue VeteransResidence in Long Island City.

The leader of the youth group ArpanaSusan Manuel, who helped conceptualizethe idea, said “This was a great way for theyouth to give back to the community. We’rereally excited about the response we re-ceived.” It is estimated through their Thanks-giving Food Drive initiative this Saturday, via Thanksgiving Baskets & ThanksgivingDay Meal Tickets, the St. Paul’s Episcopa-lian Church provided more than 400 peoplein the community the supplies and/or accessto a Thanksgiving meal.

That same day from 11am to 5 pm, infront of Supermarkets along GreenpointAvenue in Sunnyside: the Key Food Super-market (46th Street), Associated Supermar-ket (44th Street) and C-Town Supermarket(42nd Street), Boy Scout Troop and CubScout Pack 390 of Sunnyside/Woodside,Queens, held their annual “Scouting forFood” drive/collection for the local foodpantries. The pantries stores are being de-pleted and due to the increased need bycommunity residents for food assistance. As a result of the Boys and Girls Clubs

efforts, 100 food items were collected alongwith almost $300 in cash donations all ofwhich were split and forwarded equally tothe St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. TeresaRC Church and the St. Raphael’s Food Pan-try. Additionally $100 total in direct writtenchecks were collected for the food pantriesand the Food Bank of New York.

The Troop and Pack would like to thankall of their neighbors who contributed in anyform to this project to help make this holidayand winter season easier for other commu-nity residents in need, especially the storemanagers (David/Jose- C-Town; Ronni- KeyFood; Fermin/Randy/Leo- Associated) forallowing the club to conduct the drive infront of their stores. Additionally a specialthanks to C-Town Supermarket and its man-agers for donating approximately 300 “in-dustrially mishandled” (dented butuncompromised) food items which werealso split amongst the pantries.

Over at the Sunnyside Reformed Church,on 48th Street and Skillman Avenue later thatevening, nearly 200 community residents, mainly our local elderly came to the annualfree Thanksgiving Dinner. “

There are a lot of elderly peoplein the neighborhood without fami-lies who can’t cook for themselvesanymore. So this is really nice,”said Jean Bott, one of the attendeeswho enjoyed the meal. Severalfamilies attended as well as some

local residents who just wanted tobe a part of a Thanksgiving Dinnershared with the community. TheSunnyside Church has provided afree Thanksgiving Dinner open tothe public for many years but foronly the second time, the food wascooked from the church instead ofhaving a potluck dinner preparedby members of the congregation.

David Frenkel, and Chris andKaren Demarecaux, an adorable

married couple who could commu-nicate in one word or look whatothers have to communicate inwhole paragraphs, seamlessly andefficiently, and virtually single-handedly, cooked 6 turkeys at atotal of 117 pounds, stuffing, mashedpotatoes, yams, homemade cran-berry sauce and several desserts.

Volunteers included severalmembers from the Boy’s and Girl’sClub and 15-20 members of the

church family, including Pastor NeilMargetson himself. The church wasvery well organized, with differentdeacons of the church, such asMihaela Georgescu managing the

various aspects of the event effort-lessly. “We’ve got this down to ascience!” said Karen Demarecaux.

When asked what Pastor NeilMargetson enjoyed most about theoutreach, he answered, “Seeing howit all comes together. How peoplecome together. And the opportu-nity to show folks a different way ofdoing things, a way things could bedone if we stopped worshippingmoney and power.” The church puton this dinner asking for no dona-tions, only for a love offering foranyone who felt the desire to con-tribute for the supplies. But forPastor Neil and his congregation,it’s all about their community of theLittle Church on the Corner givingback its community.
