ABOUT THE COACHES
JOHN CLOUSER is the head of CIM’s Bassoon Department and is
principal bassoon of The Cleveland Orchestra. He completed studies
at Temple University, Trenton State College and Gordon College, and
his teachers have included Bernard Garfield and Matthew Ruggiero.
Clouser served as associate principal bassoon of Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal from 1994-97. He was also former principal
bassoon of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra from 1988-94 and a
member of the faculty woodwind quintet at Memphis State University
from 1988-92. He has participated in the Peninsula, Colorado,
Tanglewood, Flagstaff, Round Top and Grand Teton Festivals, and
served as adjunct professor at McGill University, Rhodes College and
Haverford College. He was appointed to the CIM faculty in 1997.

MARY KAY FINK joined The Cleveland Orchestra as piccoloist in
1990 and has appeared as soloist with the orchestra on numerous
occasions. She has also been a member of the New Jersey Symphony,
Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra and Seito-Kinen Festival Orchestra. In
addition, she has performed with the New York Philharmonic,
Nashville Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra
and Milwaukee Symphony. She was Associate Professor of Flute at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison (1988-89), flute instructor at Baldwin
Wallace College (1994-99) and has been on the faculty of CIM since
1991. In 1986 she won first prize in the National Flute Association
Young Artist Competition and has been invited to many of the
National Flute Conventions as a performer. She holds degrees from
Oberlin Conservatory of Music and The Juilliard School.

RICHARD KING joined The Cleveland Orchestra in 1988 at age 20
as associate principal horn. He served as principal horn from 1997-
2015, and now sits as a section member. King has been featured many
times as soloist with the Orchestra, including works by Britten, Haydn
and Mozart. He has also appeared as soloist with the Richmond
Symphony, Tokyo Symphony and New Zealand’s Auckland
Philharmonia.
A native of Long Island, New York, King began playing the horn at the
age of 9 and spent six years as a student of Arthur Green. He then
attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where his
primary horn teacher was former Cleveland Orchestra principal
Myron Bloom.
An active chamber musician and recitalist, King has performed as a
member of the Center City Brass Quintet since 1985; their five
recordings on the Chandos label have been met with wide critical
acclaim. His albums of Chamber Music for Horn and Schubert Lieder
transcribed for horn and piano have been released by Albany Records.
In July and August of 2014, he was a first-time participant at the
Marlboro Music Festival.
King is a member of the faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Music
since 1995. He plays a Conn 8D horn and is a clinician for the Conn-
Selmer musical instrument company. He lives in Cleveland Heights
with his wife Julie, a cellist, and their children, Charlie and Amelia.

FRANK ROSENWEIN joined The Cleveland Orchestra as principal
oboe at the beginning of the 2005-06 season. He made his solo debut
with the orchestra in February 2007, and since then has performed as
soloist numerous times, most recently in the Vaughan Williams
Concerto in April 2017. Prior to coming to Cleveland, Rosenwein
served as principal oboe of the San Diego Symphony and San Diego
Opera from 2002-05. He has also served as guest principal oboe with
the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Born in Evanston, Illinois, Rosenwein holds a Bachelor of Music degree
from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with former
Cleveland Orchestra principal oboe John Mack, and a Master of Music
degree from The Juilliard School studying with Elaine Douvas. An avid
chamber musician, Rosenwein has spent many summers at the
Marlboro Festival and has performed with the Mainly Mozart Festival in
San Diego, Seattle Chamber Music Society and Philadelphia Chamber
Music Society. As a teacher, Rosenwein was appointed to the CIM
faculty in 2006 and holds the position of head of the oboe department.
He also teaches at the Kent/Blossom Music Festival and is in demand
as a guest artist and master class clinician in schools all over the world.

JONATHAN SHERWIN, bassoonist and contrabassoonist, joined
The Cleveland Orchestra in 1997. He was previously a member of the
Colorado Symphony, where he also served as personnel manager.
While living in Denver, he was active on local Denver television and
radio, performing voice overs for the orchestra’s publicity and
advertising. In addition, Sherwin was the host for the Colorado
Symphony’s “Talk Back” series of post-concert question and answer
forums. A native of Buffalo, New York, he holds a bachelor’s degree
and Performer’s Certificate from the Eastman School of Music and a
master’s degree from Northwestern University. His teachers have
included K. David Van Hoesen, Willard Elliot, Burl Lane and Bradford
Buckley.
Sherwin has served as principal bassoon of the Chicago Opera
Theater, Chicago Civic Orchestra and Chicago City Ballet Orchestra,
and also has been a member of the New Orleans Symphony, Buffalo
Philharmonic and Chicago’s Music of the Baroque. He has participated
in the Aspen Music Festival, Grand Teton Music Festival, Spoleto
Festival USA and the Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto, Italy. Active
as an educator, Sherwin teaches at the Cleveland Institute of Music and
at Baldwin Wallace University Conservatory of Music and has given
master classes at many colleges and music festivals including the
Eastman School of Music, Duquesne University, Aspen Music Festival
and Chautauqua Music Festival. When not practicing, teaching or
making reeds, Sherwin can be found on the tennis court or watching
classic movies.

RICHARD SOLIS was a member of The Cleveland Orchestra from
1971-2012. He served as principal horn with the Orchestra from
1978-95. Solis attended CIM and studied horn with Myron Bloom from
1965-69. He is a former artist-in-residence at the University of
Delaware and was principal horn of the Festival Casals. His recordings
include chamber music from the Marlboro Festival, and he can be
heard on more than 100 recordings with The Cleveland Orchestra as
principal horn. He was appointed to the CIM faculty in 1977.

BARRICK STEES is the assistant principal bassoonist of The
Cleveland Orchestra and instructor of bassoon at the Cleveland
Institute of Music and Kent/Blossom Music. Stees received a bachelor’s
degree and performer’s certificate from the Eastman School of Music
where he studied with K. David Van Hoesen.
He has concertized extensively in Europe, South America and Asia,
including a solo tour of Hong Kong and China. He has appeared at
international music festivals in Italy, Germany, Argentina, Colombia and
the Dominican Republic. He has given recitals throughout the United
States. Solo appearances include performances with the Hartford
Symphony, South Bend Symphony, Brevard Music Center Orchestra
and Cass City Bach Festival.
Awarded the Presidential Scholar Teacher Recognition Award from
the United States Secretary of Education, he has taught at Michigan
State University, Interlochen Arts Camp, Interlochen Arts Academy,
Brevard Music Center and University of Akron. His former students
occupy prominent positions in orchestras and universities throughout
the United States.
Stees was previously principal bassoonist with the Hartford Symphony
and has played with the Pittsburgh, Milwaukee and Detroit Symphony
Orchestras as well as the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has recorded
three solo CDs, The Romantic Bassoon, Opera Transcriptions and
Paraphrases and Nostalgica. His website, www.steesbassoon.com, and

AFENDI YUSUF joined The Cleveland Orchestra as principal
clarinet with the start of the 2017-18 season. Born in Addis Ababa,
Ethiopia, he has appeared as guest principal with a number of North
American ensembles, including the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra,
Canadian Opera Company and the Toronto and Cincinnati symphony
orchestras. As a guest musician, he has performed with the Los
Angeles Philharmonic, Minnesota Orchestra and Vancouver Symphony
Orchestra, under the batons of Gustavo Dudamel, Edo de Waart,
Gianandrea Noseda, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Yehuda Gilad.
A winner of a variety of concerto competitions, Yusuf has made solo
appearances with the Colburn Orchestra, Royal Conservatory
Orchestra and Guelph Symphony Orchestra, among others. He has
collaborated with performers Charles Neidich, Ronald Leonard, Martin
Beaver, and with composers Georg Friedrich Haas, John Adams and
Anders Hillborg. He is an alumnus of the Aspen Music Festival and
School, Brott Music Festival, National Youth Orchestra of Canada and
National Arts Centre’s Young Artists Program. He has been a
participant of the Marlboro Music Festival since the summer of 2016.
Yusuf holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ontario’s Wilfrid Laurier
University, where he was a student of Ross Edwards, and an Artist
Diploma from the Glenn Gould School in Toronto, where he studied
with Joaquin Valdepeñas. He also holds a Master of Music degree and
Professional Studies Certificate from the Colburn School’s
Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, where he was a student of
Yehuda Gilad.
