It’s time to start a new Des Moines Woodworking season. It looks like we have a slate of meetings for the year that promise to be new and informa-tive. The education committee is also working on new classes for the fall, so stay tuned for addition-al announcements on the upcoming schedule.

I don’t know about any of you, but I didn’t make as much sawdust as I wanted this summer. I need to get busy.

Many thanks to all of you that have helped support our community in the past year. In May, there was a silent auction to support the Waukee HS Baseball team with meals/snacks on long road trips. Two items were donated and raised $200 (unfortunately a sudden rainstorm cut the bidding early)! We had great sup-port with two Habitat for Humanity efforts, building cabinets and introducing their new homeowners to a few tools they may need around the home.

There is an opportunity with an organization that we are all familiar with, Tools for Opportunity. In No-vember they are heading down to El Salvador to de-liver a pallet of tools (sounds like a few power tools are mixed in this time) and spend some time with the

recipients to train them on usage and safety of power drills and routers. They still have need for some tools and donations are welcome; however, the big need is a few more people willing to go on an adventure to warm Central America just as the bitter cold of winter is setting in. If you are interested in learning more, visit their website: http://toolsforopportunity.org (which has more details on the activities of the week), email Gene Pedersen directly at [email protected]. It sounds like a tremendous opportunity that I hope to join in a few years when the kids are older and stop stealing all of my money.

Have you used the new video library on our web-site? This summer, volunteers Patrick Culp, Srini-vas Paladi and Brian Messenger finished posting over 10 years of our meeting presentations and shop tours! Our volunteers will be making simi-lar improvements to the whole site as an ongoing project. If you’d like to help us test the new designs on your desktop PC, tablet or smart phone, please send us a note at [email protected] and we’ll get you set up the beta testing group. Thank you!

I got an award for Parquetry at the State Fair, I will bring that piece along on the next Saturday meeting to talk about. I will be giving a presentation on Par-quetry for the Ames Woodworkers and I thought that I could make the same presentation for the Saturday Morning Furniture Makers Group for the Septem-ber meeting. I will be going over some of the same topics as the presenter discussed during the Club’s spring program. I will have better solutions for dealing with veneers. Please join us on the 14th of September at the Woodsmith Store, 9:30 AM.

Tip of the Month – Board Supports

If you prefer to pre-finish some parts of your projects before assembly, but narrow boards can be difficult to stand on edge while applying a stain or finish. A solution is the “H”-block supports shown in the photos here. The design allows these blocks to support a board of any thickness. And since the space between the legs is the same as their thickness, they can nest together to hold even the thinnest stock. When you’re done, they stack together for compact storage

The blocks edges are rounded over withlonger lengths of wood before cutting them to size. The ends were eased before screwing the parts together.

Preferred Suppliers DMWWA membership discount at those busi-nesses. We know from past experience that DMWWA members frequently use their club discount at local hardware stores, but not all the local hardware stores are on our Preferred Sup-pliers list. If your local hardware store is NOT one of our Preferred Suppliers, be sure to ask them why not and whether they’re interested in getting on our list and getting more business from you and our other 400+ members. Email me [email protected] with contact information for your local hardware store (owner/manager name and phone number) and I’ll contact them about becoming a Preferred Supplier. Thanks for your help!

These preferred local suppliers support us through Members discounts & assistance with association projects, so please support them. Be sure to ask about an item’s discount and show your current Membership card before you make a purchase. Check the Club Website for more information.
