From the Principal’s Desk

Last week 27 students attended the GRIP Leadership course in Coffs

Harbour and another 10 students were given the opportunity to develop

their leadership skills in their attendance of the Halogen Conference in

Brisbane.

One of our school’s most important challenges in today’s world is to help create and support lead-

ership across the school.

Last week 27 students attended the GRIP Leadership course in Coffs Harbour and another 10

students were given the opportunity to develop their leadership skills at the Halogen Conference

in Brisbane. It is so important for students to pass these positive attributes on to other students in

our school.

I am looking forward to hearing directly some of the outcomes of the GRIP Leadership day next

Wednesday where group representatives will address the Executive meeting. Student voice is an

extremely important reason as to why our school is achieving so much in many areas across the

school.

Our SMILE program and our Academic Achievement Centre are two such programs that have

come about by listening to student voice.

I hope the students bring some great ideas to next Wednesday’s meeting.

Last night I attended the Zonta Young Women in Leadership public speaking awards in Coffs

Harbour. Our school captain Alex Rook, took out the Pat Funnell Award which was presented by

Dave Funnell (a retired Principal of Woolgoolga High). The Mayor, Denise Knight was in attend-

ance and commented very positively on the calibre of the speakers on the night. Congratulations

Alex!

Until next time

AMBULANCE SCHOOL COVER—EXCURSIONS

We have been advised that the Ambulance Service of NSW has reciprocal health care agreements with all

Australian states except Queensland and South Australia.

This means that, even though Woolgoolga High has Ambulance School Cover for students who have an

accident or fall ill whilst at school or at an organised school activity, they are not covered while on school

excursions to Queensland and South Australia.

Only students whose parent/guardians hold a Commonwealth Government Health Care Card or have private

health insurance (including ambulance-only cover) are possibly covered when on a school excursion to Queens-

land or South Australia. It is strongly recommended that parents/guardians who do have cover with a private

health fund, check their family’s eligibility with regards to travel to all the states.

GENEROSITY Willingness to use what you have been given (time and resources) on behalf of those you seek to influence.

RESPONSIBILITY We all have a responsibility to develop what we have and help others to live well.

INTEGRITY A commitment to truth and honesty in dealings.

PEOPLE Every human being is of great significance, and has a purpose to fulfil.

On Tuesday 3 October, a large group of students

including SRC, prefects, SMILE mentors and

captains of Woolgoolga High joined the leaders

from other local schools to attend the GRIP Lead-

ership Conference at Coffs Harbour.

The conference was organised into different

sessions. Each session taught us how to maxim-

ise our leadership skills by learning strategies to

involve more people in school events, maximise

our contribution to the leadership team, and how

to create dynamic school culture. We learnt that

we can have a real impact on the attitude and

behaviours of other students by using strategies

to support and involve them in school activities.

The sessions were a lot of fun and we gained

knowledge and confidence to lead students in the

best possible way.

All students who attended the conference agreed

that tips and strategies they learned are useful

and can be implemented for the wellbeing of all

students at our school.

Metalwork and Ducklings - the new technology syllabus for Years 7 and 8;

integrating learning in technology areas of metalwork, agriculture, engineering and digital

technologies.

Early this term saw Year 10 Food Technology busy

designing recipes, organising ingredients and

creating their own ‘freak shakes’. Freak shakes are

milkshakes topped with everything and anything

you can imagine. As part of their practical and

theoretical lessons, students had the opportunity to

innovate, refine their cooking skills and practice

multiple techniques. All students did a wonderful

job! Here are some of the creations.

WHS Year 6 Orientation Day

The "It's in the Bag" Christmas campaign

asks the community to donate a handbag

that you no longer use, fill it with items that

would make a woman feel special and

even pop a thoughtful note into the bag to

show her that someone cares and that she

matters. A combination of essential and/or

luxury items can be included which will

make any woman feel loved.

Woolgoolga High’s staff and students

would love the community to get behind

this initiative and donate goods and bags.

There are pink bins outside the home sci-

ence staffroom that students can leave

items. The students in Year 11 community

and family studies will spend a morning

filling the bags with items such as the ones

listed.

U/14s Cricket

On Tuesday 30 October the Woolgoolga High

School Under 14s cricket team travelled to

Connell Park in Bellingen to participate in the

second round of the National Bank Shield.

Although it started out as an overcast day, the

weather cleared and both teams enjoyed the

competitive nature of the day. After the tossing

of the shoe (no coin available) Woolgoolga

batted first, setting a roaring total of 134 runs.

Opening batsmen Hunter Jefferies and Callum

Roworth set the scene for the day with a

scorching 48 and 30 runs respectively. They

were supported by their teammates with fast

running between the wickets.

In the field the boys played well, with steady

batting from the opposition. A diverse range of

bowling occurred with the following results:

Jack Dudgeon 4 overs, 1 for 5 runs

Manveer Clair 4 overs, 0 for 11 runs

Callum Roworth 4 overs, 2 for 22

Isaac Hart 3 overs, 0 for 7 runs

Hunter Jefferies 4 overs, 4 for 5 runs

Ryan Barnes 4 overs, 0 for 10 runs

Judd Watters-Campbell 2 overs, 1 for 6 runs

Ethan Pursch 3 overs, 1 for 12 runs

Harjaap Singh 1 over, 1 for 2 runs

A huge thankyou to Mr Pomroy from Bellingen

High School for organising the home game and

parent Mr Perry (with Mrs Hart) for scoring.

Thanks for the support from parents for bringing

the cricketers to the game and to Mrs Hart for

organising the Woolgoolga High side. We look

forward to playing Toormina High School on

Monday 12 November at the High Street fields.

Alcohol and Young People

Trends relating to young people and alcohol are increasingly improving. Specifically, there has

been an increase in the age at which 14–24-year-olds first tried alcohol, from 14.4 years in

1998 to 15.7 years in 20132. Also, fewer people aged 12–17 are drinking alcohol and the pro-

portion abstaining from alcohol increased significantly between 2013 and 2016 (from 72% to

82%)

2 http://www.aihw.gov.au/alcohol-and-other-drugs/ndshs/CHECK

3 http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=122765890

However, whilst more young people aged between 12 to 17 years of age are abstaining from

alcohol than in previous years3, almost 5 million people in Australia aged 14 or older (22%)

reported being a victim of an alcohol-related incident4.

Young people are less likely than adults to be concerned about potential negative conse-

quences of alcohol and are at greater risk than adults (being both physically and psychologi-

cally vulnerable).

Current research suggests the brain is not fully developed until about 25 years of age. Binge

drinking alcohol before this age can result in permanent brain damage5, affecting memory,

learning, decision making and problem solving.

Recognising the serious impact of alcohol on young people, NSW Office of Liquor and Gaming

have changed the laws regarding supply of alcohol to young people. Under Section 117 of the

New South Wales Liquor Act 2007 it is illegal to supply alcohol to people aged under 18 years

in a private home unless it is supplied by:

• the child’s parent or guardian, or

• an adult who has the approval of the child’s parent or guardian.

A person convicted of secondary supply in NSW can be fined up to $11 000 for each underage

drinker involved.

For more information on the effect of alcohol on the developing brain, see http://darta.net.au/
