The SMILE Program has been a great influence

on the wellbeing of many students this year.

Over 80 SMILE mentors have had regular meetings with younger students to share their experiences, give support to help them feel safe and encourage the students to give their best while they are at school. These meetings take place during home group at the start of the day. The SMILE Program is giving students a safe place to talk about their school experience and share anything that’s on their mind. Some students have shared issues with their SMILE Mentors that they were not confident to take to an adult. This is where the SMILE Program bridges the gap between students and WHS staff. The SMILE Mentors can then use their training to best accompany the student to someone who can resolve the issue and their focus can return to learning. Full story and more pictures on page 4.

Parent Teacher Night for Years 7-12 will

occur on Monday 31st July from 3.30pm. It

would be great to see many parents attend.

This week we had an outstanding NAIDOC

Assembly. The theme was Our Language

Matters and the special guest presenter was

Uncle Michael Jarret. Uncle Bing supported

our ceremony and there was a significant

number of Aboriginal parents and community

members in attendance. We showcased our

Aboriginal girls’ choir and had the opportuni-

ty for Lachlan Nash to sing in language. The

recently recorded video by NITV at our

school was also shown. I urge all parents

and community members to watch this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?

school Positive Behaviour for Learning. At the

recent Assembly of Excellence the Semester 1

major award winner of a new laptop was

drawn. Congratulations Kalani Connor of Year

Applications for tertiary study in 2018 will open on Wednesday 2 August 2017.

NSW Year 12 students will receive an email with their four-digit UAC PIN on Monday 31 July.

If you have any questions, please see Mr Burton.

The SMILE Mentors have also been planning and running events to help spread the anti-bullying

message and promote positive social behaviour. The SMILE photo booth, held late last term,

was well supported by students in all year groups and sent out a really positive message to the

wider school community. Students brought their own positive messages and had a fun photo with

their friends. The students received a copy of the picture and some of the best pictures were

made into posters to further promote the anti-bullying message.

In late June SMILE Mentors also hosted the Year 7 lunchtime “Dance against Bullying” party.

This was another popular event where Year 7 students and SMILE Mentors enjoyed their

lunchtime dancing in the music room. The students got to know their SMILE Mentors a little more

and a fun time was had by all.

Students are reminded of the extensive support network in the school. Teachers, Head Teachers,

Year Advisers, the Welfare Department, SMILE Mentors and Deputy Principals are all willing to

assist with any student issues.

Early Entry and Student

Recommendation schemes

The majority of university courses need to be

applied for via the University Admission Centre

(UAC). Notification of acceptance into courses is

made in late December via UAC, after ATAR

results are determined. “Early Entry” is a system

where students can apply to participating univer-

sities and courses to receive a course offer prior

to their final ATAR being announced.

The UAC is now offering a system of applying

for Early Entry via UAC called SRS (Student

Recommendation Scheme). However, not every

university is participating. Some universities

offer their own system, or in some cases offer

both their own system AND SRS!

It is recommended that you do not apply for any

Early Entry processes until you have had a

good look through the UAC Guide. Free copies

of this Guide are available from the careers

office from August. Mrs Court also recommends

that you wait until after your trial exams before

you apply. With any application you must have

your NESA Number.

Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS)

are one way institutions make early offers to

current Australian Year 12 students who have

applied for undergraduate admission through

UAC. Applications for SRS are a separate appli-

cation to UAC and are completed online via the

UAC website after you have submitted your

UAC preferences. You will also be asked to

answer some questions about yourself, your

background and your study goals. Further infor-

mation regarding SRS is located on page 34 of

the UAC Guide. Or go to http://www.uac.edu.au/

srs/

SRS offers are made in mid November and early

December (unconditional offers) before ATARs

are released and are made to all eligible prefer-

ences. Conditional offers are made uncondition-

al if criteria is met in December and January

rounds.

At this time 12 institutions will be participating in

SRS in 2017 for 2018 commencement.

U15 CHS Basketball

Congratulations to all boys and girls playing, scoring and supporting the U15 CHS Basketball

competition in 2017. Most of the students in the girls’ team were new to basketball. They were

beaten by Toormina High School but recorded a win against Orara HS due to a forfeit. All girls

played with enthusiasm, effort and sportsmanship.

The boys’ team played a thrilling first game to win against Toormina HS by 2 points! Strong defence, composure and

teamwork helped Woolgoolga HS to start the competition with a win. The height and experience of the Bellingen HS

team proved too difficult to overcome but was still an excellent game to spectate.

The games even made Prime 7 News!

Big thank you to Bryan Davison for coaching the boys’ team, organisers and parents for making the day a success.

Signing off for the season.

Mr Pursch

Congratulations to the 82 Woolgoolga High students who

competed with great sportsmanship and prowess at the

recent Mid North Coast Zone Athletics Carnival held at

Coffs Harbour International Sports Stadium.

Woolgoolga accumulated 498 points and came third over-

all for the day close behind Coffs Harbour and Bellingen

High Schools. Special mention to the 17 boys—Tim Della,

Soni Finau, Brodie Floris, Luke Gustafson, Nick Johnson,

Isaiah Koopmans and Izack Smidt, who together scored

100 points for Woolgoolga.

Listed below are the Woolgoolga students who have qual-

ified for the North Coast Regional Athletics Carnival. Good

luck at the next level.

Thanks to all the parents who came to support the

Woolgoolga students and the Woolgoolga teachers who

worked as officials all day at the Mid North Coast Athletics

carnival: Mr Morgan (Shot Put)

Mr Feeney (High Jump)

Mr Beveridge (Timekeeper) and

Mrs Sandhu (Team Manager).
