Ms Wall is on leave and we are sure she will be taking the

opportunity to relax and be ready to start Term 4 with all her

usual energy.

This morning we heard of Molly Dugan’s achievement of a

gold medal in javelin at the State Athletics. Molly is to be

congratulated on pursuing her talents to the highest level as

well as being successful in her schooling.

The signing of the Partnership Agreement with our local

Aboriginal Community had an inspiring message for our

students and our community. Listening to Nadia from AIME,

Lisa Hicks from our AECG, Uncle Vic Chapman, Jade Kennedy,

Jarod Wright and Kyal Wilson (Year 10 students) was valuable

to our understanding of their stories and life as well as our

land. This was an important event for the life and future of

our school community.

Our Community of Schools program is expanding

extraordinarily and diversely. We have had some great

special interest days lately in the TAS and PDHPE areas. Ms

Bolam and Ms Burns had the Primary students engaged and

simply enjoying what they were doing. Our Mathematics

teachers gave demonstration lessons on Friday for our

Partner primary Schools so that we can share the different

ways of teaching Mathematics. Teachers sharing information

and skills just reinforces the shared process of learning across

our schools. It is always wonderful to see the enthusiasm of

students and teachers interacting with others in learning.

We are in the process of planning for next year and students

are being asked over the final weeks of term to select their

electives for next year. We always like to give students the

opportunity to try new subjects and so we are offering Year 9

and Year 10 2013 the chance to do three electives. We hope

that students will take this opportunity to try something that

may offer them different skills or concepts.

Whenever I see performances by the Circus Skills students I

am in awe of their talent and courage. These very talented

students have also impressed the organisers of School

Spectacular and they will be featured in this show.

Congratulations go to the students and to Mr McDermott.

Year 9 Report

Several Year 9 students have been involved in an ongoing

project focusing on both engagement in school and on work

readiness, run by the Independent Employment Advisory

Service and supervised in-school by Mr. Buswell. As a result of

their involvement with the project, one student has

successfully obtained part-time employment and another has

obtained the Construction White Card (previously known as

Green Card in NSW) which is a nationally recognised course

compulsory for all workers carrying out construction work.

Woonona High School has been integrally involved in the

2012 Southern Stars production. Our congratulations go to

year 9 students Emily Doronzo, Hayley Fisher, Cello Mahon,

Brenna Petrolo, Elleigh Price, and Tahlia Reynolds on their

participation. Congratulations also to students from other

years: Taylah Carter, Holly Forrest, Sarah Hardy, Alyssa

Ludewig, Amelia McPherson, Candice Nicholls, Bronte Petrolo

and Brittaney Shepherd. I am no doubt echoing the students’

sentiments by thanking Ms Sharp and Ms Whiddon for the

time they put in to readying the students for performance as

well as for their expertise and guidance.

At present we have a number of students who have achieved

Silver Merit (Deputy Principal’s Merit). They are: Ben Brien,

Emily Doronzo, Alyse Egbers, Madisyn Hermann, Brooke

Howard, Emma Maslowski, Grace Murphy, Brenna Petrolo,

Tahlia Reynolds, Teya Storm, Erin Te Pairi-Pratt and Stephen

Wallace. Others are well on their way to achieving Silver

status and I anticipate there being quite a few students

receiving the Principal’s Award by the end of the year.

During a recent year assembly, a number of students were

presented with certificates on behalf of Ryan Park, our local

member. These certificates were awarded in recognition of

their volunteer work with the Rural Fire Service.

In 2012, a focus of staff and students alike has been on the

school as a community. I would like to commend Year 9

students for really trying hard to achieve a more harmonious

co-existence with others in the school. It is heartening to see

students engaging in positive behaviours which reinforce our

sense of being at one with each other.

Careers

Trades Roadshow

By Rachel Merrett

On Wednesday 29 September 27 Year Ten students attended the Trades Roadshow at the Illawarra Senior College.

Students were given the opportunity to experience a few trade tasks and took part in activities from decorating cakes to trying their hand at welding. Cake decorating was easily the most popular activity among the girls; after all you got to eat the results. Carpentry and brick laying proved more popu-lar amongst the boys.

The opportunity to have a go at welding both virtual and ac-tual was taken advantage of by students. The provision of an interactive welding display was astoundingly successful with students being able to try their hand in a safe context. Only a few students made their way to the actual welding which was hosted in another building. However, among them, Emma Rigby was called a “bloody good welder”.

Interestingly many girls found construction trades to be capti-vating. Marissa Decker thinks she might have a future in con-struction. Where as many of the boys were intrigued by horti-culture. Kyal Wilson took the opportunity to plant three seed-lings.

Personally, however, I favoured the hospitality display. The hands on nature of it made me feel very creative. After all I find myself to be a very practical person.

On the whole the students found the excursion to be very helpful by giving them clear ideas of what they might want to pursue in the future.

Reminder to Students

The Breakfast Club on Thursdays has continued to be a big hit

with FREE brekky available on Thursday mornings 7:30-

8:15am, at the canteen. We have had some more sponsor-

ship come on board, including Woolworths Corrimal, Country

Valley Milk and Kellogg’s. I am so grateful to all our sponsors

who make it happen.

My latest activity at school has been ‘Girl Talk’ – a program

on self esteem and confidence with Year 8 girls. We have

been meeting twice a week and have enjoyed looking at is-

sues like Strengths, Body Image and Self-Talk.

Arcadians Childrens' Theatre would

like to congratulate Mitchel Begley, Emily and Jarrod Turcato on their roles in the upcoming production of You're History.

You're History begins with a nerdy teenager turning a

portable classroom into a time machine sending a

mischievous detention class is sent hurtling back through

history! The time-warped team discover vicious Vikings,

pilates-practicing Pirates, disco-happy Gladiators, a rapping

Romeo and Juliet and the infamous Oedipus on Jerry

Springer. With parallels between hierarchical history &

today’s schoolyard, here is a rollicking musical chock-full of

wonderful characters, historical mayhem and sensational

songs – a hip, intelligent production that will rock the

house!

The production runs from September 21st to 23rd. Tickets

are $10 for concession, $15 for adults, and groups of 10+

are $10 each. Bookings can be made

at www.arcadians.org.au or by ringing 4284 8348.
