Chairman’s Notes

Hi everyone.

I trust I’m not the only person who hasn’t done any Christmas shopping yet – after many years of experience I can now get it all done in 1hour and 40 minutes (which includes the 40 mile round trip to Hereford). If anyone is interested in developing my technique you are most welcome to enrol on a six week course of instruction – it’s not cheap but it is well worth it in the long run. Having said that, it’s just occurred to me that Annie’s going to read this – oh well, it was good while it lasted.

You will all have noticed the deterioration in the weather and the fact that the griers have been out to play. I have no doubt that this will result in a lot of bikes being placed in hibernation and I can’t say I blame you. There are a number of us (me included) that will be determined to brave the elements and keep riding. Whichever course of action you intend taking I’ve been forwarded details of the following website by Craig Endico:-hp://www.allyearbiker.co.uk/

The site contains all the information you might need about the cleaning service they provide and it is interesting to note that they will happily aend anywhere (for a group), I recommend that everyone considers it, especially after the damage that road salt caused to my bike last year. Craig and Roger Brookes are looking into seing something up with this company and, if anyone else is interested then, contact Craig, Roger or me so that something can be arranged.

Don’t forget the forthcoming AGM in January. As you may be aware, we are looking for volunteers to get involved with the commiee in various roles and you will "nd details further on in this newsleer. The ‘job description’ for all the commiee roles is available on the library section of the WHAM website and I would encourage you get involved in helping to run the group. Albeit it might seem a bit daunting I can assure anyone who is interested that there is plenty of help and support available from the ‘past masters’.

I’d like to "nish off by thanking everyone for the fantastic support I’ve had during my "rst year in the chair – I do intend applying to stand for the role of Chairman for next year and I look forward to joining you all in taking our group forward to continued success. And "nally, Annie and I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and best wishes for 2012.

Brian. (must go – I’ve been rumbled – going Christmas shopping apparently!).

Editor’s Notes

It appears that my "rst aempt was well received, thank you all. Not wishing to rest on my laurels I have made some changes, hopefully for more improvement.

I have also introduced a new section entitled ‘Interesting Web sites’. I would imagine that most of use the internet for our various hobbies and interests (some of us have a life outside of motorcycling). What I hope, is that you submit any sites you may deem would be of interest to the membership, for example, you no doubt are aware one of my passions is photography, and on reading numerous magazines I am amazed at the number of so called photographers who do not know their camera shuer count (how many times they have taken a photograph). So I have included the web site hp://myshuercount.com/ this is a free site and will do exactly what it states.

Best wishes to everyone for a Happy Xmas and New Year

Most of you will be aware that Ian Barnard works for the AA. He receives a monthly magazine from the company called “Standby” and the various articles are interspersed with commendations for patrols that have been received from grateful members. One of these in particular caught Ian’s eye as it was bike related and he thought it would be worth sharing with the club

I was motorcycling with friends in Derbyshire and to cut a long story short, one of our number had to be airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. His girlfriend was from Scotland and as you can imagine was very, very distressed, but had also acquired a puncture. The Patrolman came to site and recognised her as having delayed shock, which obviously meant riding home 320 miles on a patched tyre, whilst crying for her heavily injured boyfriend was unthinkable. After some discussion between the patrol and his managers on the phone, the AA kindly agreed to repatriate her and her bike back to Scotland.I am a business person and know this sort of effort has gone far beyond what would usually be expected and will have cost the organisation money. Please be assured that through riding and my business contacts I will sing the praises of the AA to everyone I meet for helping our friend when she was in distress. I am also an active member on several web forums and will convey my hopes for other members to take up membership with your organisation as a result of this. My own membership is up in a couple of months and I for one will be taking out future policies with the AA as a result of their compassion and humanity in this situation.

COMPLAINING GETS RESULTS by Alex Hoyle

A QUESTION OF INSURANCE by Alex Hoyle

I've just bought another bike for the winter, a BMW GS800, and was on the look out for insurance. So as normal I always go to both Confused and Go Compare to see what they can come up with. The cheapest quote I managed to obtain for me with zero no claims bonus, (this is because its being used on my other bike) was with Hastings Direct at £152.64 I'm also doing my observer training with John Hodges and I mentioned this to him, he said I should try IAM Surety so I did. Their best quote for the same bike was around £300.00, again I mentioned this to John and he said I should get back in touch with them, if only to let them know that they were not competitive. To be honest I was not going to bother, however in the end I sent them an e-mail. Well, "rst thing Monday morning the phone goes and its the chap from IAM Surety, offering to match the Hastings Direct quote of £152.64

I have an Arai Chaser Helmet, which I must say is super piece of kit. However the visor on an Arai is held on with what Arai call side pods. These side pods clip on to the side of the helmet and help to "x the visor in position. Now, for some reason, in the last year I've managed to break three of the side pods, all on the left hand side. They are handed and can only be purchased in pairs at around £25.00 per pair. So you can see that this is starting to get expensive.

When the last one went the other week on the ride back from Tuffins at Craven Arms, I went berserk. I phoned Arai and got put through to the workshop. I explained the situation and pointed out that if they did not do something about this recurring problem, this was going to be my last Arai helmet. I was asked to send the helmet back to them, which I did.

The next day I had a call from them, saying that as a sign of good faith they would not only replace the broken side pods, but the chin vent, and the inner chin guard as well, all of which were showing signs of wear.

So in conclusion, if you have a go at some of these companies, you can get them to help once you point out you may be switching to a competitor. Good Old Arai I say.

Den Osborne tests the route for the next Wham Ride Out to the dunes at Aberdovey

Den has sent the Newsleer a few photos of his recent biking adventure to Southern Morocco and the Sahara (its a rather large desert) with Dakar legend Mick Extance.Den says the riding was fantastic but extremely hard work and after 10 days riding through dried up river beds, vast salt lakes, rocky mountain tracks and huge sand dunes he was well knackered, so he took another week off work to recover.Den was the only one of the "ve who started out to complete the route.
