Greetings!1898-2018: 120 years of art education at the Worcester Art Museum

Our Studio Class Programs team has put together a brand new summer schedule at the Worcester Art Museum. A variety of classes for all ages found throughout several sessions – May-June Summer Adult classes, Adult July Institute, Adult August Workshops, and Summer Classes for Youth and Teens – are ready to inspire and inform students age 3 to 103!

Whether you are taking an art class for the first time or have been an artist for years, we invite you to join the community of artists to learn, explore, and develop your artistic skills and voice. Our faculty share their knowledge and expertise in order to nurture creative growth in each student.

Spring Community Day: Heroes and Villains Day Sunday April 15, 2018, 10am – 4pm

Who are your Heroes? Who are your Villains? Explore the world of Heroes and Villains at the Worcester Art Museum. Enjoy tours about heroes in art, drop-in for art making activities, demonstrations by historical presenters, and perhaps a chance to bask in the presence of those from a galaxy far away and long ago. You may even find that sometimes a person, or a group, may be considered heroic by some and villainous by others!

The truth is often taken from a certain point of view.

About our ADULT CLASSESWhy WAM?Home to one of the oldest and most respected studio art programs in the region, the Worcester Art Museum offers a wide range of art and art history classes and workshops taught by the area’s leading instructors. Unlike other programs, WAM students have access to the Museum’s world-renowned collections that inspire and inform their work in the classroom. Studio art classes and workshops are available for day, evening, and weekend sessions and for all ages, abilities, and interests.

College and Teacher Credit

Teachers and educators may take any of our classes for Professional Development Points. The course Radiance Rediscovered: The Art of Stained Glass can be taken for graduate credit through Fitchburg State University. The cost of credit is $390, and is additional to the course tutition. You must register for credit before the first day of class. See more information in the course description on page 10.

Adult Classes

the Worcester Art Museum, St. John the Baptist by Andrea del Sarto is one of the few paintings in America by the great Florentine master. Discover the amazing history of this painting, which was owned by some of Boston’s most famous citizens and lent to several museums before being donated to the church where it remained unidentified for almost two decades.

50 Centuries of Art: Tour the WAM Collections Martha Chiarchiaro Wed 7–9pm, May 9 – June 13, 6 weeks Non-Member $180 / Member $162 Enhance your understanding of art by exploring the historical and technical significance of the outstanding collections of the Museum. Explore the art of ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome through sculptures and decorative arts. Discover the history of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque art through architecture, sculpture, and paintings. We’ll learn about significant artists of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries through some of the finest works of art in the European and American collections and complete our tour with the American Decorative Arts collections.

Masters of the Italian Renaissance Martha Chiarchiaro Thurs 1- 4pm, May 10 – May 31, 4 weeks Non-Member $180 / Member $162 Explore the pivotal contributions of Italian artists from 1300 to 1520. Begin with the transitional works of Cimabue, Duccio, and Giotto who set the foundation for the Renaissance. The works of Masaccio, Donatello, and Brunelleschi will illustrate the early innovations of the Renaissance in painting, sculpture, and architecture. The variety of styles that emerged during the Renaissance will be illustrated in the works of artists such as Botticelli, Piero della Francesca, Giorgione, and Bellini. The triumvirate of Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael, along with Titian, will demonstrate the innovations of the High Renaissance. Each class will include a PowerPoint presentation and a visit relevant Museum collections.

Building Worcester’s Italian Collection Jim Welu Wed 5:30–7pm, May 2, 1 day Non-Member $30 / Member $27 It has taken a century for the Worcester Art Museum to build its distinguished collection of Italian paintings. This lecture by the Museum’s Director Emeritus, Jim Welu, who oversaw the collection for many years, focuses on the collection’s assembly. Join Jim as he sets the stage for subsequent lectures on three of Italy’s greatest masters: Leonardo da Vinci, Piero di Cosimo, and Andrea del Sarto.

The Worcester Leonardo: Its 20th-Century History Jim Welu Wed 5:30-7pm, May 9, 1 day Non-Member $30 / Member $27 Discover the fascinating story of how a small painting now attributed to Leonardo da Vinci came to the Worcester Art Museum. This illustrated lecture by the Museum’s Director Emeritus introduces you to the individuals who played a key role in bringing this Renaissance treasure to the public’s attention.

A Taste of Calligraphy CJ Kennedy Wed 6-9pm, May 9 – June 6, 5 weeks Non-Member $140 / Member $126 Learn calligraphy, the art of beautiful writing! Use a broad-edge pen and ink to create graceful and elegant letters in Italic, a style of handwriting used in the 15th and 16th centuries. Computer Art

Introduction to Adobe Cloud – New @ WAM Hannah Gaucher Thurs 6–9pm, May 10 – June 21, 7 weeks Non-Member $220 / Member $199 Learn Adobe suite, focusing on graphic art programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Flash. In-class projects such as digital painting, photo editing, book compilation, and creating animated gif files will cover the many capabilities of working digitally. Explore texture effects, glazing value, and color theory in this medium. Learn Bill’s straightforward and effective system of working with color. Use any color medium including oils, pastels, watercolors, acrylics or colored pencils to create rich color and the luminous feeling of light. Prerequisite: at least two drawing or painting courses. Figure Drawing and Painting Elaine Smollin Mon 1-4pm, May 7 – Jun 25, 7 weeks (No class on May 28) Non-Member $280 / Member $252 The structure of this class respects each artist’s interest in the figure. Individual support will enrich everyone’s personal abilities in any style. This weekly class will allow each artist to enjoy informal discussion of visual art and appreciation of individual talents and aims. Short poses by the life model are followed by two one-hour poses. Mixed Media & Mono Prints Nan Hess Feldman Mon 9:30am–1:30pm, May 7 – May 21, 3 weeks Non-Member $125 / Member $112.50 Explore the resist technique of oil, pastels, and watercolor, with the addition of Caran D’ache crayons, to create multi-textured results. In addition, explore making loose mono prints using Gelli plates and acrylics. Supplies for first class: Gelli plate(s) and color media of your choice. The Art of Collage Donalyn Schofield Thurs 2–5pm, May 10 – June 21, 7 weeks Non-Member $220 / Member $198 Create both 2D and 3D collages using acid-free glues and mixed media such as resists, glazes, photo montage, and paste papers. Class projects will focus on using your personal iconography to create meaningful and exciting works of art! Please bring imagery, scissors, and gel medium to first class. Includes some materials.

Art Studio Sampler Patti Kelly Sat 9:30am–12:30pm, May 12 – June 30 (No class on May 26), 7 weeks Non-Member $215 / Member $193.50 Learn to draw in pencil, charcoal, pastels, pen, and ink, and try your hand at watercolor and acrylics. Gallery visits will help explain terminology and provide an understanding of how artists use these mediums. Returning students and those with some experience will continue to explore the fundamentals of artmaking. All abilities welcome. Paste Papers Workshop Donalyn Schofield Sat, June 9, 10am–4pm, 1 day Non-Member $75 / Member $67.50 Make paste paper all morning and move into other techniques for enhancing papers in the afternoon, giving the beautiful paste papers time to dry. Other techniques will include washes, glazes, various gel media, and crackle techniques, some of which can be used on canvas and boards, as well as on paper. Solar Plate Etching – New @ WAM Randy LeSage Tues 9:30am–12:30pm, May 8 – June 19, 7 weeks Non-Member $242 / Member $217.80 Solar Plates offer a versatile and quick process for creating images on transparencies to attach to film-based solar plates (approx. 5”x7”). Work in your choice of drawing media or photo imagery for exposure to the sun and development in water, and learn the process of printing individual editions of prints in black or colored inks. Writing

Those Left Behind – New @ WAM Jim Beschta Tues 6-9pm, May 8 – June 19, 7 weeks Non-Member $210 / Member $189 Families are both formative and interesting. Using the characters and situations you grew up with, this course will center on narrative accounts and accentuate the honing of writing skills, both poetic and prosaic. Develop your artistic writing skills and techniques in this supportive workshop environment. Please bring writing materials or laptop; free Wi-Fi provided.

Writing Workshop: Novella in Flash Laurel King Wed 6-9pm, May 9 – June 20, 7 weeks Non-Member $210 / Member $189 Do you like writing short fiction but also have the desire to produce a longer project? The novella-in-flash offers a chance to create a full-length work while still embracing the concision and energy of the flash form (less than 1,000 words). We’ll read flash fiction and novellas-in-flash, critique student stories, explore how to connect flash fictions to create a novella, and discuss possibilities for publication. Returning students are welcome, along with those who prefer to write “stand-alone” flash stories. Suggested text is My Very End of the Universe: Five Novellas-in-Flash and a Study of the Form.

Sculpure

Sculpture I & II Thomas Kellner Mon 1–4pm, May 7 – June 25 (No class on May 28), 7 weeks Non-Member $240 / Member $216 Learn the basics of 3D art to create your own sculptures in clay, wood, plaster, and other materials. Use the Museum’s collection for inspiration. Includes material and model fees.

Teacher Institute @ WAM

Radiance Rediscovered: The Art of Stained Glass Jane Lattimore Mon-Fri 9am–5pm, July 9 – July 13, 5 days Non-member $450 / Member $405 Additional Grad. Credit Fee $ 390 Explore the elements of color and line in art through the medium of stained glass. In conjunction with the Museum’s exhibition, Radiance Rediscovered, this course examines four stained glass windows by L.C. Tiffany and John La Farge. Gallery experiences include an introduction to the exhibition by guest curator Amanda Lett, as well as discussion and activities that focus on the two artists and their achievements in stained glass. A trip to the studio of the exhibition’s stained glass restorer, Diane Rousseau, is planned, as well as a visit to St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Worcester, to view its Tiffany windows. Students will work with visiting artist, Jeanne Kowal, to create a stained glass project. This class is designed for art educators who would like to gain knowledge of stained glass and experience working with methods and materials that lend themselves to a study of line and color in the classroom. All educators and stained glass enthusiasts are welcome. No prior knowledge of studio art is necessary. Students taking the class for college credit are required to complete a curriculum assignment after July 13. Required reading is assigned prior to the first day of class for those taking the course for credit. Includes some materials.

Asian Brush Painting

Art Patrons and the Creation of Great American Museums Martha Chiarchiaro Wed 7–9pm, July 11 – August 1, 4 weeks Non-Member $120 / Member $108 What do Clark, Frick, Gardner, Getty, Mellon, Phillips, and Salisbury all have in common? They loved art and wanted to make it available to the public! Explore the fascinating history of the great museums of America, large and small, and the role individuals played in their creation. We’ll also explore the importance of the individuals who supported avant-garde art-ists and made it possible for these artists to share their works with the public. WAM and other New England museums will be highlighted!

The History of American Painting Martha Chiarchiaro Thurs 1–4pm, July 12 – August 2, 4 weeks Non-Member $180 / Member $162 WAM has one of the most comprehensive American painting collections in the country. With PowerPoint presentations and visits to the collection each week, explore the history of American painting from early portraits through contemporary time. Examine early paintings through portraits such as those by Copley and Stuart, and the landscapes of Cole and Kensett will help us understand American’s pride in their new nation. Explore American artists home and abroad in the late 19th century through the work of Homer, Eakins, Whistler, Sargent, and Cassatt. Explore the history of comics and narrative art and learn how to incorporate old and new techniques into your work. Projects will include exercises in character design, concept art, storytelling, and methods to self-publish your own comic.

Portrait Drawing I & II George Hancin Tues 6–9pm, July 10 – July 31, 4 weeks Non-Member $157 / Member $141.30 Learn to draw the portrait through direct observation of a variety of models. Study the proportion of the head, including its structural planes and features. Exercises will focus on proportion, gesture, structure, value, and contour. Demonstrations, examples of master drawing, quick exercises, and long poses will help you develop drawing skills, as you learn the expressive possibilities of graphite pencils, charcoal, and conté crayon. Whether you’re new to the figure or returning to the subject, get inspired by examples of modern and contemporary art as well as sketching from a live model. How to Take Great Photographs at Night Norm Eggert Wed 6-9pm, July 11 – August 1, 4 weeks Non-Member $132 / Member $118.80 Night photography is great fun and not difficult if you understand your camera. First, learn the fundamentals of photography – such as, how to make a good exposure (essential for night photography) and the importance of white balance and good composition. Then, venture out into the night (weather permitting) to practice what you have learned and receive supportive feedback on your photographs.

iPhone Photography Richard Hoyer Thurs 6–9pm, July 12 – August 2, 4 weeks Non-Member $142 / Member $127.80 The iPhone is the most used camera in the world. Learn to shoot, edit, and share with your iPhone. With so many camera Apps available, we’ll go over some of the best. Relief Printing for a Month Randy LeSage Thurs 6–9pm, July 12 – August 2, 4 weeks Non-Member $140 / Member $126 Relief printing offers a direct and enjoyable way to create unique personal prints in black-and-white or color. Small editions can be created from your choice of wood, linoleum, or e-z cut blocks. Learn through examples and demonstrations of relief practices, including the application of tools to safely cut blocks, ink, and print on various papers. One block, multiple block, reduction, and white-line methods will be introduced. Choose what works best for you. Includes materials fee.

AUGUST WORKSHOPSFigure Drawing and Painting Workshop Randy LeSage Mon – Fri 10am–4pm, August 13 – 17, 5 days Non-Member $407 / Member $366.30 In this intensive workshop, draw and paint from the life model. Mornings will include exercises that emphasize ways of seeing while drawing the figure, including anatomy, proportion, contour line, gesture, light and dark, and massing volume in space. About our YOUTH CLASSESWhat Makes our Program Unique?WAM has a long history of introducing children of all ages to the world of art. Our students explore the Museum, try new materials, and benefit from working with professional artists and educators. As they build on their skills, they gain a sense of confidence and a deeper appreciation for art. All youth, not just those with perceived talent, benefit from our Program. Our instructors consider each child’s unique capabilities and give individualized attention during lessons. All materials are provided for youth classes.

Tips to choose the right class:

•Youth classes are designed to be developmentally appropriate and are age specific. Age ranges are listed on next page.

• Enroll earlier to secure a spot. Classes must meet enrollment minimums to run.• Learn more about our faculty at worcesterart.org/classes/meet-our-faculty.• Come visit in advance of classes to familiarize your child with the Museum.

Youth Levels

Ages 3 – 5 Years with Adult Fun art activities, games, and stories introduce children to a wide variety of media, and encourage development in communication skills and fine-and gross-motor control as students draw, paint, and sculpt. Participating with your child encourages skills in collaboration helps children gain self-confidence. These classes require one adult/guardian per child enrolled.

Ages 5 – 7 Years Students are exposed to a broad range of ideas and art forms through medium-specific classes, such as sculpture and painting, and through theme-based classes. Emphasis is on self-expression and experimentation.

Ages 8 – 10 & 11 – 13 Years Students strengthen creative confidence and technical abilities through medium-specific courses. Projects focus on developing observational and technical skills as well as furthering the student’s ability to think independently.

Extended Day and Lunch Pricing Sign your child up for just the morning, just the after-noon or have them come for both sessions! We also offer early drop off, supervised lunch, and late pickup options to extend your child’s fun at WAM.

Each option is available for all 6 weeks. If you enroll a child in extended day and/or lunch, please note that the Worcester Art Museum requires that students provide their own nut-free lunches, healthy snacks, and drink(s). Please alert WAM staff at the time of registration if your child has a serious allergy or other medical concern.

Start to build, or continue to refine, your computer animation skills in this introductory class. In our computer lab, explore software that can help you bring your dreams to the screen and with the guidance of your instructor, create a short animated sequence by the end of the week! Create portraits in a variety of media as you explore representations of people in the Museum. Study Dutch, French, British, and American landscape paintings in the galleries, and paint outdoors and in the studio. Art and Myth 11-13 Years Susmita Bando Non-member $150 / Member $135 Learn about mythological heroes and creation stories depicted in art. We’ll look at work from ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, Japan, and China. In the studio, use the rich stories as inspiration for your own work. Practice printing, painting, sculpting, building, and embellishing your own creations.

TEEN CLASSES What’s Available for Teens? WAM’s intensive classes for 14-17 year olds provide time to develop skills, create a portfolio-appropriate artwork, and share ideas with other like-minded students. Teen classes include group critiques, socializing, and break time. They also provide a great opportunity for college-bound artists, students looking to build their portfolios, or just have some creative fun. All class materials are provided.

Materials All art materials are provided to youth and teen studio class programs, except when noted. Please see the full course description online for details. Spray paints, fixatives, and aerosols are prohibited in WAM’s studios. The Worcester Art Museum is not responsible for materials left on the premises.

Student Pickup and Drop-off Students are not allowed to leave early from class without a written parent release form filed with the Registration desk. Parents and guests pickup and drop-off students from the Lancaster Welcome Center, please note the Lancaster Street entrance is not accessible to wheeled devices. An accessible entrance is located on Tuckerman Street via the Stoddard Garden Court entrance. Designated spaces are available for visitors with disabilities and families with small children in two WAM parking lots - Salisbury Street and Tuckerman Street. Parents and guests must wait in the Lancaster Welcome Center or the Museum galleries during their child’s class. Only registered students are allowed in the studios and galleries during class-related activities.

Nut Free Lunch and Snacks If you enroll a child in extended day and/or lunch, please note that the Worcester Art Museum requires that students provide their own, nut-free lunches, healthy snacks, and drink(s). Refrigeration is not available. Please make sure your child knows which food should be eaten at snack time and lunch time. Please alert WAM staff at the time of registration if your child has a serious allergy or other medical concern.

Refund Policy - Important! A 90% refund is given upon withdrawal in writing 5 or more business days before first class meeting. Withdrawal must be in writing. Email withdrawal request to: [email protected]. No credits or refunds are given on withdrawals less than 5 business days before the first class meeting. When a class is canceled, students are issued a full refund. Supervised lunch and extended day fees are non-refundable. Make-up classes are not offered if students are absent. Class tuition cannot be prorated due to student absences.

Confirmations/Schedule Changes The Worcester Art Museum reserves the right to cancel any under-enrolled course, restrict the registration in a course, change instructors when necessary, and reschedule individual classes as needed and appropriate. If the Museum finds it necessary to cancel courses or make schedule changes, every effort will be made to notify registered students.

Photos From time to time our in-house photographers and members of the news media take pictures of students participating in classes and programs, as well as their artwork, which may be reproduced for promotional purposes. If you prefer that you or your child not be photographed, please inform the photographer. If we have used a photo or video of you that you would prefer not be used, please contact us by email [email protected], request that we remove the image, and we will be happy to take the photo or video down from our website and not use the photo in future print publications. Please be sure to fully describe the page and image, so we can identify it correctly.

Studio Availability Due to liability adult students may enter studios no more than 15 minutes prior to the start of class. Only registered students are allowed in the studios and galleries during class-related activities. Because studios are cleaned at the end of each class meeting, students and instructors must completely clean up and leave the studio by the end of their reserved studio time. Our studios may only be used for art classes during scheduled program hours.
