Editor’s letterWell, my sun-dance has worked!! (and just in time for the start of the school summer holidays!) Last month, I wrote about how the sun was shining and we were looking forward to a glorious summer - little did I know that just around the corner, the wettest July on record was looming…!

That said, the British weather didn’t dampen our spirits and we all cheered our way through Murray’s centre court battle with Federer (with the roof on, as course!) whilst we dodged the showers. August is often a quiet month, with many families (particularly those with school age children) disappearing for a well-earned break or “stay-cation”. Thanks to those of you who got in touch to praise the wonderful Day Lily Garden on show during July

in Shadbolt Park. As one of you wrote ‘it has been rather beautiful and uplifting, enjoyed by many people and is a credit to the people who tend the park’. So, why not dust down your deckchair and relax in the sunshine in your garden or one of our lovely parks with the August issue of the Worcester Park Life – assuming the rain hasn’t come back…. Enjoy! Particularly now that we can breathe a sigh of relief as the major gasworks in the area (and associated problems with parking, noise and access) are now more or less completed.!

Worcester ParkHistoryThis month we look at Worcester Park’s celebrations for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Many local people enjoyed street parties. In Elmstead Gardens, clusters of gazebos and tables stretched from the top to the foot of the road. In Longfellow Road, which has seen street parties on several occasions, there was the traditional line of tables running down the road outside the playground; the tables were used for a children’s tea including a specially-decorated cake. A festive cake was also enjoyed at St Mary’s Church, following a special commemorative service. A number of the roads arranged entertainment: Beverley Road and Longfellow Road both had children’s entertainers, and the former also had a three-piece band. At Leyfield adults and children took part in slow bicycle races. Many houses were decorated with flags and bunting, especially in the roads which were holding parties – Donnington Road being a good example. Worcester Park Station also took on a festive appearance, with bunting and red, white and blue flowers alongside the steps at the top of Station Approach, courtesy of the Worcester Parkers WI. We also had the chance to join in with the network of over 4000 Jubilee beacons around the UK and Commonwealth, thanks to the Cuddington Residents’ Association which arranged a beacon-lighting at 10.26 pm on Monday 4 June in Parker’s Field, Royal Avenue, attended by over 200 people – this was followed by a magnificent display of fireworks. The Association also organised a tea party for around 100 children, relocated from Shadbolt Park to Rowe Hall because of the weather. Our illustrations this month include views of street-parties and the beacon ceremony. Many thanks to all who made me welcome when I toured some of the events; if you think you may have been in one of my photographs and would like a copy, please get in touch. Worcester Park can also claim an involvement in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant on Sunday 3 June. Local resident Cedge Charlton was rowing in the Man-Powered Boats section; he writes: “Our boat, the Viking, was built by Harland and Wolff as a lifeboat for the TSS Worcestershire launched in 1904. Her mother ship was sunk by a German mine off Colombo, Ceylon, during the First World War. 14th Richmond Sea Scouts acquired her in 1935 and all her present crew learned to row in her during the late 1940s. She is maintained by the ‘old rover crew’ who row her each year in the Great River Race,

22 miles on the Thames between Greenwich and Ham House; average age at the moment is nearly 75. We were afloat for 8hrs 30 mins for the Pageant and were well wet and cold by the time we came ashore, but very happy to have had the honour to take part.” Dr Bowen-Perkins of the Shadbolt Park Surgery was also involved, on Elvin, the Dunkirk ‘Little Ship’ which he has restored. The Pageant website (www.thamesdiamondjubileepageant.org) explains her role in the rescue of troops from the Continent: Elvin left Ramsgate late on 2 June 1940, and arrived at Dunkirk at

As soon as they could see, they went alongside the eastern pier, where a column of soldiers was drawn up. A French officer called out, “Combien des soldats?” The skipper could not remember the French for 25, so he shouted “trente”, which was more than they could comfortably hold! But another was admitted when one of the French pleaded: “mon ami!” They landed 25 French and 8 British troops on the North-East wall at Ramsgate. A permanent reminder of the Jubilee can be seen outside Griffiths Close in Cheam Common Road, where a tree has been dedicated by 4th Worcester Park Scout Group, donated by the Worcester Park Forum and Traders. And finally, a date for your diaries: St Mary’s Church, Cuddington, at the top of The Avenue, will be participating in the Heritage Open Days scheme once again. The church will be open on Saturday 8 September from 11am to 5pm, and there will be a display of maps of Worcester Park through four centuries, and an exhibition about Cuddington Fetes, Fairs and Fundays through the 60 years of the Queen’s reign. There is no charge, all are welcome, there is plenty of parking, the building is largely accessible to wheelchair users (including wc) and tea and coffee will be available. We also hope to have copies

of my new book about Worcester Park, Old Malden and North Cheam on sale.

Ruth Jemmett asks: Could YOU Be A Volunteer? In a Utopian world there would be no need for charities, support groups or volunteers. In such a place governments would put the needs of fellow human beings way above encouraging us to gain fulfilment from chasing after professional achievements, monetary gain, personal gratification or getting involved in wars. But hey-ho - life isn’t perfect. Sadly, we are a very long way from achieving such an ideal, and in order for our society to function adequately, we have to rely on the goodwill of a large silent army that we often take for granted - namely, The Volunteer. For the most part, people are blessed with relatively normal families ( I don’t think a PERFECTLY normal one exists!) and fairly good health. Consequently it is easy for the majority of us to trot along in our blinkered lives, only being reminded of “those less fortunate” when we have a charity collection tin shaken in front of us by a ‘chugger’ in a shopping centre. In the hurly-burly of our busy lives we often lose sight of the fact that many charities actually depend on volunteers in order to exist. I too, lived in my own little bubble for many years, scurrying away from collection tins, and generally feeling smug that I was one of ’us’ and not ’them’. It was only when I was shaken out of my complacency by the arrival of my birth damaged son many years ago, that I was suddenly thrown into a strange parallel universe where I looked for support from voluntary workers to make my life bearable. Until I was touched by a major life tragedy I didn’t realise that such unsung heroes often keep the cogs and wheels of many people’s lives turning. Yes, of course The National Health Service were there, as were Social Services, who I had to apply to for necessary and costly equipment, (and I was very grateful for it at the time) but where would I have been if volunteer drivers hadn’t ferried me and my son to literally hundreds of hospital appointments over the years? At that time I had neither the income or time to drive. They were my saviours - and only a tiny section of a vast caring army. As time went on, I too, was in a position to be a volunteer for others - and it certainly opened my eyes.As I worked alongside such special people I became awestruck at the selflessness, dedication and sheer hard work that each volunteer put into their own particular calling. I was inspired to emulate their efforts, and eventually ended up sitting on five charity committees. As meetings were held in the evenings it meant that I could do such work while my son was asleep at home, being cared for by either my husband or mother. I could fit telephone calls and typing work for the charities around his school hours, and soon realised that although my son was very disabled, there were countless other families in worse positions. I began to count my blessings. Of course we can’t all be Mother Theresa, but

if each of us helps our local community just a bit, without looking for glory or financial gain, the feeling of achievement is tremendous, and more importantly, it helps us to be less selfish and inward looking. No - we can’t solve all the world’s problems, but we can chip away at our own little corner, gradually improving things for countless others. We are often told that many people in our over-populated society are lonely. There really is no need to be, when so many groups are crying out for helpers. Many people say they have no time for such work, but even contributing a couple of hours here and there can make such a difference to other people’s lives. During my years as a volunteer I worked alongside busy mothers, medical

professionals, probation officers and teachers - indeed all very busy people. Voluntary work can be a gateway to making many new friends. Working for a common cause can forge lifelong bonds. Indeed, some of my dearest friends are those I met during my volunteering days. You might say “But what have I got to offer?”. Some people can use their own life experiences to help others. Parents can pass on their knowledge to the upcoming generation. Those who are empathetic might be drawn to training as a Bereavement Counsellor or a Samaritan. Hands-on work with physically disabled people can be especially rewarding. After all, one day that person in the wheelchair might be you …. We must never take the voluntary sector for granted. The term “do-gooders” is often hurled sarcastically at such people. With so many miscreants seemingly determined to make our world a BAD place to live in, we, perhaps, need the selfless volunteer more than ever. Do you think that you might be that special person who makes the difference? I’m so glad that I lifted that ‘phone all those years ago to ask about a bereavement counselling course. It changed my life - and hopefully changed the life of others for the better. You too could change lives by volunteering for a cause that suits your personality and skills. They are waiting for your call.

I’m often asked for suggestions for birthday and anniversary gifts by panicked male friends, and while their other halves are likely to be perfectly happy with traditional gestures like flowers or chocolates, lets be honest, it’s not exactly pushing the boat out effort wise. I’ve made a discovery this year and come up with a cunning plan to score the menfolk some serious brownie points, so ladies look away now! Gents, how about preparing a gourmet, award worthy meal for your other half? Fear not, I am not for a moment suggesting that you come over all Heston Blumenthal, but a far simpler solution. The secret is www.cookfood.net. This ingenious family run company, offers award winning, chef prepared frozen meals delivered straight to your door! They aim to create fantastic dishes, prepared by hand using the same ingredients and techniques you would at home, and they don’t disappoint. What a great idea for those of us who don’t have a great deal of time to cook , but still want to eat well and enjoy a special evening in without the stress of preparation, or the guilt that follows giving in to the local take-away! Imagine my excitement when on my return to Worcester Park, I discovered that there is a Cook shop in Epsom! It’s close enough to drop in and choose your meals yourself, or just sit back and let someone bring a delicious dinner to you (they even do an amazing BBQ selection for summer entertaining!)

As you know, something would be amiss if I didn’t talk about wine at some point in this article, and so I thought I’d take the guess work out of choosing a wine to match a few of their gorgeous ‘special nights in’ meals. Roasted Confit of Duck with a Juniper Berry Sauce. This dish works really well with a peppery red wine, such as a predominantly Grenache blend. My personal recommendation is the La Citadelle Sablet from Boutinot and for around £10.99, you can’t go wrong! This Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre blend and it’s flavours of black cherry and black pepper, plays well against the sweet, gamey earthiness of the Duck. Sea Bass with Asparagus tips and Linguine in a Lobster and Saffron Bisque. I love this because and you can go white or red with your wine choice. A crisp un-oaked Chardonnay is the way to go with the white, I recommend the South African Dusty Road un-oaked Chardonnay. Choose a light red like a Pinot noir, or a South African Old Vine Cinsault from Percheron. Last but definitely not least, Risotto with porcini Mushrooms and lemon and sage butter. This vegetarian option is stunning! You can pair this with a light Italian red like a Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, or you could go all out with a gorgeous English sparkling Rose such as Ridgeview Fitzrovia (served at Buckingham Palace!).

How to manage excessive tree shade.A frequent point of discussion with customers is over the scale of trees both in your own and neighbours gardens affecting your lawns and borders. This page reflects on these issues and suggests options to alleviate the shade issues.

Some gardens are much more prone to excessive shade issues than others. Where a tree has a southerly position it can cast a large shadow across your garden, this is most noticeable in the spring and autumn where the angle of the sun is low across the horizon. The problem is amplified where the trees are evergreens such as Leylandii conifers and have grown to a significant height. Both for your own garden and as a considerate neighbour it is worth doing a check every year or so to observe if trees you own are creating too much shade.

In terms of lawns it is possible to re turf or seed areas around trees with more shade tolerant grass species which may not produce as nice a lawn surface but do give a good cover. Likewise shade tolerant shrubs can be planted around the borders of trees to provide ground cover. Where there are several trees together the competition for light can cause trees to either develop an unbalanced crown (asymmetric) or lead to a single stem “shooting” for light and having a limited middle or lower crown. Some trees that cannot compete for the light at these growth rates than faster growing species such as Ash, Leylandii and Eucalyptus will experience dieback. you can therefore control excessive shade and at the same time encourage diversity in a range of tree species. If you feel that a neighbours tree is causing you a problem with too much shade we suggest that a friendly discussion is the best starting point. Quite often your neighbour may not even be aware that this problem exists and will be more than willing to have some surgery to resolve the issue. The problem is usually a little more complicated where the property is let out and communication with the landlord or managing agent is required. Do remember that if the tree in a neighbouring property has a Tree Preservation Order or is in a Conservation Area a planning application will be needed that gives the name and contact details of the tree owner with their or an agents signature on the form.

Tree Surgery to control shade issues. Three options are possible for improving light conditions, it is often an idea to combine some of them to maximise the desired effect. As a general rule of thumb it is advisable to not exceed works that remove more than 30% of foliage bearing structure for a tree, we suggest that surgery aims to still end up retaining a natural shape to the crown of the tree and minimise the hazards of dieback from the pruning points. A crown thin is designed to lighten the crown to allow more light to penetrate whilst leaving the existing shape of the tree canopy. The weak, thin and crossing limbs as well as secondary branches are removed to create this level of thinning. A crown reduction reshapes the whole canopy taking in the top and sides pruning each limb to a suitable fork or bud to allow re-growth from these points.A crown lift (or crown raise) takes out the lower limbs of a tree to give clearance above ground level. The limit to this technique depends upon the shape and amount of middle and upper crown, the surgery should not be done as to create a “lollipop” from where the trunk is too tall for the canopy above it. Our advice is to carefully consider all the options in managing shade issues and if necessary get free advice from arborists like R J Tree Services.

If you’re going on holiday shortly, don’t forget that your garden and plants will appreciate some TLC before you leave.

Time spent sorting out your plants will help keep them going and make your house look less abandoned in your absence whilst you’re away.Make sure you take care of your lawn. Give it a thorough mowing, cutting it short but without ‘scalping’ it. Take a pair of lawn edging shears, a half-moon edger or simply a sharp spade and neaten all the edges, including those next to flower beds. Edging lasts far longer than mowing, it will stop the lawn moving into the flower beds and make the grass appear more recently maintained. Make sure that all plants, especially those in containers and those forming fruit are fed well. Liquid feeds have the speediest response but controlled release fertiliser granules will last for longer. If you use a dry or granular feed, make sure that you water it well unless rain is expected.Persuade a friend or neighbour to pop in and do some watering and suggest they pick the sweet-peas and harvest some veg so you’ll both benefit. A good, thorough watering of the garden will mean that plants in open ground should be unharmed by hot weather for a good while. Plants in pots and tubs are totally reliant on you if there isn’t much rain, so make these your priority. Many plants cease flowering if faded flowers are left and allowed to start to form seeds, so remove every faded bloom before you leave. I suggest ‘dead heading’ not only the faded flowers, but also those just starting to fade. A sharp pair of scissors or just your finger and thumb should do the trick. Hanging baskets are invariably in the hottest, sunniest parts of the garden and with their roots in the air they are especially prone to drought. Unless they will be regularly watered, it’s best to carefully lower hanging baskets and stand each one on its own pot in a shady spot where it will dry out less quickly. Planters and patio pots lose moisture very readily especially if the weather is hot or windy. By carefully grouping the pots together in one place you’ll create shade around the roots of the pots, reducing the risk of drought and heat damage. Try to position more drought tolerant patio plants towards the outer edge of the group, and drought prone plants towards the cooler

centre. Make sure that your garden sheds and other storage areas are properly secured however it’s worth giving the padlock keys to a neighbour, just in case they need anything. Ladders, mattocks, spades and other items that could be used to break into your house (or the shed) should be removed or locked away out of sight so that they don’t encourage burglary. Finally check that any new outbreaks of pests or diseases are treated or dealt with before you go. Leave a handful of whitefly in your greenhouse, or a few greenfly on your roses, and there may well be a full-scale disaster zone when you return! Even The Samba Slows...It appears that someone is slowing the Samba in Sao Paulo. The exciting tempo that was the growth of the world’s second largest developing economy has been showing some serious signs of faltering. The golden period of President Lula was always

going to be hard to sustain, and it has been unfortunate for the new President, Dilma Rousseff, that she was inevitably going to see a more difficult economic climate. The Brazilian consumer has been one of the primary drivers of the economy over the past few years; however now it seems that the consumer led drive is faltering. Last week retail figures were expected to rise from April by some 0.6%; in fact they dropped by 0.8% which was the largest fall since November 2008. No doubt these were amongst the reasons that Copom (the central bank monetary policy committee) decided to cut rates by 0.5% to 8% (it was the eighth consecutive

cut since last August, when the Selic rate stood at 12.5%). They seem to be less concerned about inflationary pressures and are trying to inspire some recovery to boost the economy which has grown by a mere 0.2% on a quarterly basis since the middle of last year. Although car sales were up a little, primarily due to a tax change, construction plunged 11.3% over the month. With exports slowing and even some manufacturing returning to home territories, the authorities are seriously concerned about the sustainability of future growth levels.In stark contrast though, earlier last week the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released its composite leading indicators and reported on the Brazilian economy. Interestingly, it came out telling a very different story. In fact the OECD indicator for the economy -- South America’s largest, is signalling a turnaround in growth, and is one of the few country or regional indicators to do so.Almost every other country and region signalled economic activity below long-term trend or significantly moderating. While Japan, the U.S. and Russia all showed continued improvement in activity, the overall trend in the last quarter suggests a moderation in growth. The biggest surprise in the data was the significant slowdown in Indian and Chinese activity, a worrying sign for emerging markets dependent on commodity exports. measure is an index of 200 economic series that usually correspond to changes in the business cycle. Summer recipe tipsHome-Made Burgers

It’s the barbecue season and nothing tastes better than delicious home-made char-grilled burgers. Follow these top tips for the best burgers around…

Always choose good quality premium minced steak for the best flavour but pick one that has some fat in it – don’t buy extra lean mince as the burgers will dry out too much during cooking. Try asking your local butcher to mince some rump or chuck steak with about 20% fat content. For four quarter pounder burgers you’ll need 500g mince.• Mince is fairly bland so you’ll need to add plenty of flavouring. Grated or very finely chopped onion and minced garlic form the basic flavouring but you add whatever dried or fresh herb, spice or seasoning you like. You’ll need to add 5-10ml (1-2tsp) salt and lots of freshly ground black pepper too. • A handful of fresh breadcrumbs and a little beaten egg will also help to bind the mince together and prevent the burgers from breaking up during cooking. Whizz all the ingredients in a food

processor until the mixture starts holding together or use clean hands to mix as thoroughly as possible.• Shape the burgers into round flat discs with wetted hands. To get perfectly round shapes press the mixture into a metal pastry cutter. Don’t over handle the burgers or they will be tough and dry when cooked.• Ensure that burgers are cooked all the way through and there is no pinkness in the middle. To check this press the burger down with a fish slice – if there are pink juices oozing out then cook for a few more minutes. • If you want a change from the classic sesame seed bun why not serve the cooked burgers on top of wedges of toasted ciabatta bread spread with a little mustard mayo or pack into warmed and split pitta breads with salad or coleslaw.

• Try a fresh tomato relish instead of ketchup – just peel and finely dice a couple of ripe plum tomatoes and mix with a little olive oil, fresh chopped basil, a pinch of sugar and salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Friendly Breastfeeding Support No doubt you are aware that ‘Breast is Best’ ...but for many mums the challenge of breastfeeding in the early days with their newborn can be a real shock. Having accurate information and practical and emotional support has been shown to be a key factor in helping mums get over the many different challenges that they might face on their breastfeeding journey. Locally, families with young children have a fantastic resource at the New Malden Children’s Centre and among the many wonderful play sessions, messy play, baby massage etc there is also a breastfeeding support group which runs on the 1st Friday of every month. The monthly meetings are run by an accredited La Leche League Leader and is for any pregnant or breastfeeding mum. You don’t even need to have a problem, it’s a great way to meet other breastfeeding mums and to get support and information about any aspect of breastfeeding. You may be experiencing the early day

challenges of worrying about out how much milk is enough, a colicy baby, tongue tie difficulties or maybe you have a baby that will only feed to sleep (very normal!). You

may be pregnant and worried about how you’re going to breastfeed a newborn and look after your toddler or how to breastfeed twins! You might have questions about starting solid food or may be looking to the future and finding out your options when you return to work. Just knowing that there are other mums who have been through it all and can offer ideas that worked for them, as well as a range of books and leaflets for mums to browse or borrow and having a sympathetic group to chat to has helped many mums feel more confident in finding a way that suits them and their family. It’s August, and although the crop circle season is nearing its end, now is the best time to go out and see what delights the Andy Goldsworthys of the skies have left us to marvel at this year. Actually, crop circles “appear” around the world throughout spring, summer, and autumn – whenever and wherever there’s a standing crop. But with a fair chance of decent weather and the kids on holiday and needing some diversion, August may be the right month to go and see one, perhaps as part of a day out in the country which might include a pub lunch and a couple of hours in a traffic jam on the A303 (because an awful lot of crop circles “appear” in the Stonehenge area).I say “appear” in quotation marks because of course the contentiousness about them is how they’re made, or more especially who or what they’re made by: freak

weather, outer space visitors or human pranksters.Crop circles have been reported sporadically since the 17th century, and the first investigation of their cause, in Surrey in 1880, put them down to “cyclonic wind action”, extraterrestrials having not yet been thought of. From the 1970s, though, they were reported more and more often, attracting more media attention and more

theories about their origin. I needn’t go into detail, but by 1991 there was a large body of opinion that they were the work of UFOs or their occupants.Unfortunately for the UFO theorists, in that year a couple of blokes called Doug Brewer and Dave Chorley claimed to have made most if not all of them using nothing more sophisticated than a plank and a length of rope, and were more than happy to be

filmed doing so. Since then there have been crop circle competitions and manufacturers including Nike have used their logos rendered as crop circles in advertising. There’s even a group called Circlemakers that specialises in creating ever more intricate patterns and, like Doug

and Dave, is happy to be filmed doing it.But it takes more than a video of a couple of guys with a plank and a length of rope to convince the UFO theorists and although I don’t wish to be disrespectful of sincerely-held views it always seems a bit strange to me to favour a theory you can’t prove over an alternative that can be demonstrated, filmed, and repeated on demand. The UFO theorists – who, given their refusal to believe the evidence of their own eyes, ought to be called the “sceptics” in this case – can point to lots of oddities and anomalies that suggest that Doug, Dave and their successors didn’t create all of the crop circles in the world; but then, we don’t know who painted all of the paintings in the world, but that’s no reason to suggest that extraterrestrials did.I raise the subject of paintings deliberately, because I don’t really care whether it was a couple of blokes or alien astronauts: my point is, crop circles are beautiful and they serve no practical purpose - to me that makes them art. Anyway, believe what you want to believe. But if you’re having one of those Dunkirk-spirit make-the-best-of-the-recession “holidays at home” this August, just Google one of the million or so regularly-updated websites devoted to the subject, choose a crop circle near you, and visit it. You’ll love it. Who needs art galleries?

There are Square Dance clubs throughout England (Scotland and Wales) with at least one, and often a number, of clubs in just about every county including Surrey. Hogsmill Squares is one such local Square Dance Club formed in October 2011 when Granville and Wendy Spencer moved into the area. They had been dancing at numerous clubs north of London but found there were none in this area and so decided to start their own.

The club takes its name from the Hogsmill River that rises in Ewell and flows through the local area before reaching the Thames at Kingston. The logo reflects the watermills on the river that in the past manufactured gunpowder, unfortunately they had a habit of blowing themselves up! We have at present nearly 40 members who meet at St. John’s Parish Centre, Stoneleigh on a Tuesday evening which is our main club night. However, we plan to start a NEW BEGINNERS CLASS on a MONDAY evening at 07.30 pm on 10th SEPTEMBER 2012 at St. Mary’s Church Hall, The Avenue, Worcester Park, KT4 Square dancing is suitable for singles and couples and is for all ages. You can spend quality time with your partner or make new friends while learning a new skill and taking gentle exercise.It offers fun and friendship, exercise, co-ordination and dexterity to anyone who would like to have a go.

So what is square dancing? It’s a party – Square dancing is party time every time you do it. Square Dancing brings people together for fun and friendship. The fun starts on the very first night.It’s modern – The music used is everything from country and western and all-time standards to modern pop.It keeps you fit – Square Dancing is the perfect exercise. It combines all the positive aspects of physical exercise with none of the negative elements. It is low impact activity requiring constant movement and directional changes that keep the body in shape.It keeps you healthy – As with all regular exercise, square dancing can lead to slower heart rate, lower blood pressure and improved cholesterol profile. The movements of many square dances can strengthen your weight-bearing bones. It is a positive alternative to aerobics or jogging when recovering from illness. Above all it is good fun - we laugh a lot, which is the best medicine of all.It burns off calories – During an hour of dancing you can burn between 400 and 800.

It’s a mental challenge – Reacting quickly to the square dance caller keeps you mentally on your toes. Whilst concentrating on the moves you escape from any worries and pressures. It’s teamwork – Your team of eight dancers depend on each other to keep the dance moving.It’s sociable – Square dancing contains a social component that solitary fitness endeavours do not. It is very tactile and friendly which contributes to self esteem and a positive outlook.

If you cannot make the 10th September do not worry as going forward in 2012 we plan to meet every Monday (except the 8th Oct & 5th Nov) and will be happy to accept new students throughout the first month so come along on the 17th or 24th September 2012 and you will be fine.

Voice for wildlifeWorcester Park’s own Carol Williams ponders on the water of life

Maybe we have had a little too much rain for some people during the months of June and July, but the pond in Shadbolt Park has benefitted from raised levels, and we volunteers have had no anxieties about the wildlife getting stranded in a shrinking mudpool! Water, whether flowing or still, is one of the richest habitats for wildlife. At a waterhole in the desert will gather all manner of species, some who may have travelled a long distance to reach it. Without water, there would be no life. We know this, yet we waste this resource and pollute it without thought. Life began in the water and our planet is 70% covered by it; our oceans, like the rainforests, are extremely important to the health and well-being of the whole earth: the pollution of the seas and the destruction of great swathes of forest are truly enormous acts of stupidity. As a lifelong champion of the wild, I find myself often in tears over the disregard so many people seem to have for Nature in all its forms.

Shadbolt Park Pond, and its surrounding untended wild area, is a small scale attempt to heal part of a large wound in the natural world - the gash of our urban development with its disregard for the needs of wildlife. Flooding would be reduced if we had less concrete and paving, more trees and green spaces, and small ponds to collect the rain water. WIldlife would not suffer so badly in drought, if there were more wetlands and shady places. Birds would find nest sites in thickets and hedges, if only we would plant them and preserve what we already have. Hedgehogs could move freely from garden to garden if we did not seal off their access with fences and walls; they would find hibernation sites if we left some logs and leaves in piles in corners and under bushes. If all gardeners put out a dish of water for wildlife, no creature would need to go miles to find some, using up its precious energy in the search for a drink. In long grass amphibians could hide from predators and find plenty of insect food. In 1957 the River Thames was so polluted that there was not a single fish in it between Richmond and Tilbury. Twenty years later, because enough people cared about this, the river and its wildlife was thriving once more. When attitudes alter, we can achieve much. The sign of a river in good health is the return of the otter - and these wonderful animals are making a comeback from being almost extinct in the 1970s. The Surrey Wildlife Trust is working very hard with the Environment Agency to facilitate improvements in otter habitats on our

Building a pond somewhere is one of the best things we can do for our wildlife - I hope that many more gardens, schools and public open spaces will create some in the next decade or so and that we might stop seeing the world as ‘ours’ and make more space for the other species.

Cannabis factories

Cannabis factories can be set up in literally ANY dwelling. With the correct equipment and knowhow they can be up and running in no time and remain undetected for a long time.Worcester Park and Nonsuch Safer

Neighbourhood Teams have recently closed down two cannabis factories in as many months with three subsequent arrests for cultivation of a class B drug. This was partly down to good investigative work, but largely down to observant members of public and neighbours alerting police. We all have a part to play in helping to protect society (and ourselves) from the people who cultivate and supply drugs. Drugs can ruin lives and inhibit the productivity of our countries work force. Cannabis factories inflate our utility bills. They require a very large electricity usage and those who initiate them usually bypass the electricity meter and tap straight into the mains. This is highly dangerous and the cost of this practice will eventually be passed down to those of us who pay our bills. They can cause hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage to people’s properties, as the factories are usually set up in rented accommodation. Large holes are made in walls and ceilings to accommodate the ventilation, heating and lighting that cannabis plants require, so if you are renting a property, be sure of who you are renting it to. There are certain things we can easily watch for, certain signs that may mean a nearby house or flat is a cannabis factory.1. Has the property been available to let recently? 2. Do the curtains appear to be closed all the time or screens pulled down? 3. Is there condensation on the windows?4. Do odd people attend the address spasmodically?5. If next door, is the internal connecting wall unusually warm?6. If you can view the rear of the property, are there bags of potting compost piling up either in the compost bags or bin liners?7. Are there flower pots lying around, empty, or with compacted soil in them?8. Can you detect a herbal type smell?9. Have you noticed a dull humming sound (Fans are used for ventilation). If you notice any of these signs, or anything else that arouses your suspicions, please do not hesitate to call your Neighbourhood Police Team. All calls are treated as
