He was not afraid of telling me off. I knewif the conversation sta rted " NowProvincial Grand Master" I was in for a

wigging.

In latter years he took charge ofresearching all first appointments andpromotions in the Province which for thefirst time rewarded those who hadcontributed most. He had an almostencyclopaedic memory in this respectand fiercely defended all hisrecommendations. He was usually right.

Apart from this administrative ability heloved to be out and about visiting theLodges/ meeting people and shakinghands with a smile. He rarely spent bnevening at home and if on occasion hewas a trifle austere it was because heconsidered either insufficient effort orpreparation had been forthcoming andthe traditions and standards he upheldwere being eroded. He did not hesitateto express his opinion.

We spent many hours together within theProvince, visiting other Provincial GrandLodges and Grand Lodge. We ate atmany banquets, drank lots of red wineprior to his evening tincture and above allwe laughed. He was a good man to haveon your side.

Life unfortunately does not go on forevenI always told him that if ever he wanted togive up office he was to make the firstapproach. He did just that at the end of2001 and retired in January 2002. He

was then 83 and had been in continuousoffice for some 33 years.

We all knew his health was deterioratingand it was a battle he fought with greatindependence and courage until hispeaceful release on 9'n. August this yean

His funeral service at St. Nicolas, KingsNorton, where he was a Church Warden, was attended by all his family and most ofthe great and good of the Province. Iestimate some 200 people were there topay their last sad tribute. For me it was a

kaleidoscope of happy memories goingback over such a long time,

He was a good friend to me and manyothers and he was above all, a greatWorcestersh i re Freemason

Thank you Robert.

Excellent Companion Joe GrundyAn Extraordinary Story

At the Annual Meeting of Provincial Grand Chapter on 9 April 2005, E Comp Joe Grundy proudlyreceived his promotion from the Grand Superintendent. E Comp Richard Price remarked on Joe'swar record and its surprising consequences..........

Serving in the Royal Warwickhire Regiment, Joe was evacuated from Dunkirk on June 3* L940,the day afterthe operation ofthe little boats was declared as over. After he came bac( Joe wassent to Burma, where he remained until the end of the war, fighting the Japanese in many of themajor battles. He rose to the rank of Major and had been selected to take part in the final assaultagainst the Japanese mainland when the bomb was dropped and Joe was able to come home.

Joe never forgot the help given him by a French farmer and his family during the retreat to theDunkirk beaches and he made it one of his first duties when the war was over to go back and thankthem. He took with him his wife, son and daughter.

Ian, Joe's son, fell in love with the French couple's daughter and they married. Ian and his wife livein Paris and have a son who, a short time ago completed his National Service in the French Army, leaving with the rank of Lieutenant. It is ironical that Joe, whose forefathers fought at Waterloo, probably against members of his son in law's family, now has a French soldier as a grandson c'estla vie!

How proud we are! Two WorcestershireFreemasons have prod uced litera rywonders that have already provenpopular.

Worshipful Brother Ray Hollins (on theright) is celebrating [he completion ofVolume Ten of his

* 100 Short Talks on theCraft" entitled t'A Daily Advancement inMasonic Knowledge'i whilst Brother JontiMarks (on the left) has written, publishedand launched his small book of wonders."Level Steps" in a pocket book size.

Every lodge should have these. Some

Lodges have seized the opportunity toencourage younger Brethren who are notyet in office to deliver one of Ray's ShortTalks in open Lodge, thereby providing

unique entertainment for the Lodge andgiving confidence to the young Mason

upon his 'maiden voyage' to undertakework on the floor. Jonti's "Level Steps" areprimarily concerned with the question ofhow we can use our membershiP of theCraft as a tool to aid our personal and

spiritual growth and development tomake ourselves better men and the worlda better place.

Now comes the best bit...., they're bothours! Worcestershire is very proud ofthem and their works. Both Ray's and
